Dara Torres left Beijing with her three silver medals in tow, and went almost straight to the operating room. This means the 41-year-old comeback kid mama — and hot mama at that — was swimming in pain. I couldn't tell, could you?

Torres lost her signature race, the 50-meter freestyle sprint, by .01 seconds. She has a phenomenal swim, and now that I know Torres was dealing with degenerative arthritis in her AC joint (where the collar bone, or clavicle, connects to the top of the shoulder blade), I am even more impressed. I'm impressed by her competitive drive, focus, and ability to race in pain. Obviously, she put the surgery and its six-week recovery period off so she could compete in her fifth Olympic games. She had surgery on Aug. 27 to create space in the arthritic joint so hopefully she can move her shoulder pain-free. I sure hope she has a speedy recovery, since she has a little one to chase after.

And they showed the surgery on CNN! Yikes.
1It's official....she's Wonder Woman
2She seems like one classy lady, especially when she helped that girl out when her suit broke.
3She is amazing! I completely admire her.
4Seriously, so awesome. I really like her a lot and I hope she can continue to prove that you can do anything in the next Olympics.
5She is so awesome! She took her Silvers with such grace and sportsmanship.
6I love this woman and yes I saw the surgery too. She was awesome on Leno and will be on Oprah on 9/8 and with Martina on 9/9 at an AARP thing. Here she was all freaked out about PTA meetings and now they have her doing AARP? That is so not her personality..we need to save her. She's all about blue jeans, tank tops, iPods and Toyota trucks..not the AARP..she has to be freaking out about that one.
can't wait for her to compete again..Rome in 2009 and she hasn't said no to London in 2012.
7WOW - that's an athlete through and through. i don't think that anyone really knew that she was having any issues and that she was in pain...but think about how she may have won the gold had she been 100%. i think that she's a real inspiration and i wish her a speedy recovery!
8It's so amazing what adrenaline and willpower can accomplish. At one nationals I saw a girl anchor a winning relay with a dislocated shoulder. It was crazy.
9Dara flexed for me!! I was at the Oprah taping on Wed. and between commercials while waiting for her segment, I got her attention and kept telling her to 'flex and give it up' and she did..it was awesome..I love this woman and she just stoked my motivation all over again with just one simple flex:))
