You all know that I feel breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it looks like Starbucks agrees. The coffee chain is revamping its breakfast menu to bring you healthier fare. The decision to do so is twofold: a little trickle down health from the top of the coffee chain (Starbucks' CEO was told to lose weight, and changing to a healthier breakfast helped him do so), and the hope that healthier breakfast options will bring consumers back to the ailing company.
The new menu will debut on Sept. 3, and according to USA Today, here's what you can order to start your day off on a healthy foot:
- Apple Bran Muffin: Made with whole-wheat flour, oats, wheat bran, apples, cherries, and honey.
Cost: $1.75
Calories: 330 - Multi-Grain Roll: Made with seven seeds and grains, served with a side of almond butter or strawberry preserves.
Cost: $1.60
Calories: 280 calories - Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar: This energy bar is made with oats, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, and honey.
Cost: $1.75
Calories: 250
There are a few more healthy menu items, so read more.
- Power Protein Plate: This healthy smorgasbord consists of a hard-boiled egg, a small whole-wheat bagel, a 70-calorie pack of peanut butter, a cheddar cheese wedge, apple slices, and grapes.
Cost: $4.95
Calories: 330 - Baked Berry Stella: A whole-grain pastry featuring seasonal fruits.
Cost: $1.75
Calories: 280 - Oatmeal: This whole-grain oatmeal will be served hot in a cardboard to-go bowl. The oatmeal comes with three "mix-ins" — dried fruit, nuts, or brown sugar.
Cost: $2.45
Calories: 140 with no toppings, 390 with all three toppings
The tag line for these healthy breakfast options is "Make morning good again." Just remember, there will be other not so healthy options, like the 490 calorie Apple Fritter that you will have to pass on by. I, for one, am happy to see another popular food chain adding more healthy options to menu. How about you?

I'd have the protein plate or the oats, but we don't have Starbucks here. If we did, I'd probably only get a coffee. Not a fan of pastries and the kind of stuff you get at coffee places anyway.
1My mom works at Starbucks and she and the rest of the partners got to taste the oatmeal. She said it was really, suprisingly, good. Some of the toppings she mentioned where dried fruit (100 calories), nuts, then you could also purchase a bananna for 40 or 50 cents.
2I think this sounds great! There have been many times where I'll go to starbucks wishing they had breakfast foods that aren't smothered in sugary frosting. The protein plate and the oatmeal sounds great! I'm definitely going to try these (with an indulgence of iced coffee...)
3Yay for breakfast. I'll definitley try these out when I'm picking up coffee. My sister says their little breakfast sandwiches are pretty good too, but I havent dared to try them.
4i have to say that having them post the cals on the food makes me kind of want to go 'off' food completely. i know that it's important to provide that information, but if you're thinking about getting a snack in a muffin or something like that and you see that it's 330 cals - that's just a lot to me and i wouldn't ever want to eat again.
5Good for them! I hate trying to find a healthy option and knowing that the innocuous looking muffin packs around 500 calories.
6Yay for Starbucks.
I still hate their coffee though
7I'm a Starbucks JUNKY! I'm going to guess that the "healthy options" won't be making their way up to Canada any time soon, but I'm pretty obsessed with the reduced fat breakfast sandwich with turkey bacon, egg, reduced fat cheese, and a whole wheat English muffin. It's really filling and tastes amazing.
8oh my gosh I've never consumed more than 200 calories for breakfast.. and that includes coffee.. i'll keep to my kashi oatmeal or special k red berries and coffee : )
9Wow, color me surprised. These actually aren't bad! I expected to just see a bunch of low fat (and high sugar) muffins. Do they have any more detailed nutrition info on these items?
I would totally eat the protein plate or oatmeal for breakfast on a trip or something.
And 330 calories for breakfast is not that much for most people...it's quite reasonable. I mean, if you eat 1500 calories (which is pretty darn low if you exercise) a day then you still get 5 300 calorie meals? I'm kind of concerned that the idea of eating 330 calories in one sitting would make anyone want to go "off" food.
10ditto on red sharpie's last paragraph
11I can't wait to try the new apple bran muffin! I really love the cran-oat-bran muffin they have right now, but I think that one's going to be phased out, bummer. Oh well, at least the new one is made with whole grains so I know I'll be having something healthier. Add that to my skim latte and there's a nice little breakfast!
And I agree, 330 calories is TOTALLY reasonable for breakfast. I know that if I only ate 200 calories at 6:30 AM before school, I'd be starving by second period. Eating a big breakfast (like my favorite, oatmeal with a banana, flax, walnuts, PB, and cinnamon) keeps me energized and focused all morning.
12Even though I don't ever really go to Starbuck's, I'm glad to see that they're offering something besides their usual 400+ calorie pastries for breakfast. I like to eat my oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, but if I was one of those people that didn't have time for that, I'd probably try one of these options.
