Diet Tip: Good Things Don't Always Come in Small Packages

If you've been buying junk food in small packages in an effort to lose a few, you may be missing the mark.

Two new studies have found that people actually may consume more calories when the portions and packages are smaller. The idea is if there were a king-size candy bar sitting in front of you, most of us would pass on it. However, if there were a few mini candy bars, then most of us would indulge because they're smaller and we're programmed to believe that's better for us. I know that I, for one, am totally guilty of this. Sometimes I'll buy the fun-size bags of mini candies with good intentions of only eating one, and then I'll end up eating far more than one because they're so small.

I'm not saying don't indulge every once in a while, but just beware that even though the package is smaller, the contents are still the same.

This is all just about keeping track of how many calories you're consuming, whether you want to lose weight or not. I don't think it's a bad idea to be counting your intake no matter what, even just for a few days. Most people take in a lot more than they realize... If you're counting, you'll know exactly how "bad" the little ones are!

I used to be guilty of this...I still am, but not nearly as bad as I used to be. I still have a candy jar (sometimes it's just an "I NEEDS MY CHOCOLATES" moment), but I put a post-it with the per-piece calories on it. It's only where I can see it, but it's a gentle reminder that that little piece isn't a freebie.

    Guilty as charged.
I rarely buy a bag of candy, but when I do, I go for fun sized. And then I eat half the bag in one night.
    *Hangs head in shame*

Junk is still junk, even if there is less of it. Calories are completely unrelated to how healthy something is. 200 calories of almonds is healthier than 100 calories of snickers any day of the week. Oh, and the almonds are more filling too.
