When working at a computer we tend to blink about five times less than usual. Blinking might seem like an unimportant activity, but it lubricates eyes. Having dry eyes is not only irritating, but it can interfere with your ability to get your work done and get out of the office.

Here's a handy little exercise to help you remember to blink. Every 20 minutes, slowly close your eyes 10 times. These slow, steady blinks will help lubricate your eyes and lessen any computer strain you might being feeling in your peepers.
Fit's Tip: If you drink a lot at your desk while working on the computer, slowly blink your eyes whenever you take a sip of your beverage.

that's a good recommendation - to blink every time you take a sip of something. i find that after a while my eyes really hurt cause they are super dry. it's so hard when you're focusing on things, and realize that you need visine like it's no one's business.

2This is so true!
3My eyes hurt and sting so much after hours on the computer...
this must be why! thanks fit
Great information! Just yesterday I was thinking to myself how little I blink while at the computer!!
4That's an awesome tip, I've been in trouble with my optho (I've got really bad nearsightedness) for years because I spend too much time at my computer w/o blinking! Between that and eyestrain, my Rx gets worse every year. Luckily he told me that the longer you're in school the longer it takes for your Rx to stabilize, so I can blame grad school!
5I don't have to be in front of a computer much for my job, thankfully. If I do spend too much time in front of my computer, I try to make a conscious effort to blink enough because otherwise my contacts get "sticky" and start to dry out.
6My eyes always hurt after staring at the screen for awhile, too. I also find myself leaning closer & closer to read as my vision starts blurring because I've overtaxed my eyes.
