Britney Bounces Back, For the Most Part

I honestly never thought I would write another post about Ms. Britney Spears. The girl was just not the picture of perfect health for a while, and while I am not saying she is now but she certainly seems a lot healthier than over the past few years.

Britney recently told OK magazine what she has been doing to get stage ready (perhaps for her second comeback on the VMAs?). Here are highlights on her new diet, which you'll notice does not include Starbucks:

"I'm the healthiest I've been all my life," Britney, 26, tells OK!. My diet has a lot to do with my getting into shape. I have no sugar. I don't eat fruit or even fruit juice because of the sugar. I eat chicken and salmon and rice. I eat avocados. I'll have egg whites for breakfast and sometimes turkey burgers for lunch. I try to do just 1,200 calories a day. It may sound like it's not much, but it's actually a lot of food if you eat the right things."

Of course, Brit also hits the gym on a regular basis, doing "lots of cardio and weights" five days a week.

I will say that 1,200 calories/day is the lowest most of us should ever really go when trying to lose weight, especially if you're doing lots of cardio and weights most days of the week. To find out the optimal amount of calories you should be eating per day in conjunction with the amount of working out you're doing, check out my Fit Calculator. While I may not be her biggest fan, I am definitely cheering her on to getting even healthier, so here's to hoping she adds quitting smoking to her to-do list.

Magazines of that kind do not photoshop people to make them look better. They're more likely to point out their cellulite. Anyway, I would actually include fruit in the diet.

And even when she was "fat," wasn't she just something like 125 lbs? I'd hate to have all my bad angles in magazines.

I don't think that completely skipping fruit is healthy. Personally, I become depressed if I don't have 2-3 servings of fresh fruit a day (not juice though, I prefer the whole fruit). I tried a low-carb diet once, and by the third day I was almost suicidal with depression.

I also don't think that such a diet is sustainable. Nobody can be that disciplined their whole live, and usually the more restrictive people's diets, the more spectalurarly they'll fall off the wagon. It's much better to have small treats on a regular basis and to keep the calorie intake at 1500-1600 calories to keep the metabolism healthy.

On a final note, just because Britney looks good in a bikini, she's far from healthy. A woman who loses custody of her children and whose estate has to be put under conservatorship has _much_ bigger issues than her weight.

Wow, 1200 calories and no fruit! The biggest nutritional problem for Americans that we don't get enough fruit and veggies!

Chocolatine, I'm with you! No sugar of any kind (even natural sugar founds in fruit and dairy) can drive a person nuts.

But I did read an interesting guide in a magazine that if you're craving something, your body really needs something else. And it said if you are craving sugar, you need to up your protein. So maybe Brit is getting enough protein that she doesn't miss fruits.

Actually Fit just had a quiz where it says that any form of carb is composed primarily by sugar: avocado is a fruit, and rice is a carbohidrate. Anyway, I am with everyone here: love my fruit.

It bothers me when people cut out fruit because of the "sugar." Fruits have essential vitamins your body needs... plus the sugar is fructose and the body is built to process it better than simple sugars in things like candy bars. I think it sends a bad message for her to say "she cuts out fruit because of the sugar." It's an ignorant statement.

I am, however, glad to hear she at least cares about herself again enough to at least be conscious of what's going into her body. Take care of your body and it'll take care of you.

Well duh. Who isn't going to lose weight on a 1200 calorie per day diet with exercise 5 times a week?

Not so sure her definition of 'healthy' lines up with reality...but at least she's looking more normal these days.

I agree -- her diet is unsustainable. Her body is going to rebel. She's going to have massive cravings because her diet is not balanced enough.

I think it's a bad idea she cuts fruit from her diet. Fruit has a lot of vitamin and fiber that's good for her.

She should be cutting smoking and alcohol, not fruit.

I have never heard of anyone becoming overweight or staying overweight because of too much fruit.

i'm just so happy that she's making these positive changes in her life - it's ok that she's not perfect - but i think that it's setting a great example for people - that you can be down with your luck and mess up your life and still come back and be successful and healthy.

she looks great there and i'm so happy that things are turning around for her. i'm going to keep my eyes open for the VMAs cause i hpe that she performs

Yet another example of Americans equating "fit and healthy" with thin. Unfortunately, is seems fitsugar has bought into it too. If we are talking about waistline measurements (aka how overweight she looks) then Britney was never unfit or unhealthy to begin with. She was far from overweight let alone obese. If we're talking about healthy habits we still don't know because not a single one was mentioned here. Eliminating fruit? 1200 Calories a day with 5 workouts a week? Has she stopped smoking? Has she stopped tanning? Less drinking? As long we continue to define healthy and fit based on how you look in a bikini - we will continue to loose the national obesity crisis.

No fruit because of the sugar? How about simply cutting on Starbucks and other refined sugar...

The no fruit is not forever, because she had sugar overload when she was eating badly, she must have had serious Candida. Homeopaths usually make you eliminate sugary fruits for a month detox and then you add it back in your diet after the one month. Fruits like avo and greengages are allowed because they are not high in sugar. I've done Brit's diet before for health reasons and it's really difficult to do, but really good to clear out the baddies in your system.

Just to add, I am also a fruit lover(used to be a fit for life fan) and found it odd when my Homeopath said NO FRUIT. What he did say was if I really felt I needed to eat fruit, then only the non-sugary ones would do. It made absolute sense trying to starve the parasites and not feed them more sugar. After the Candida was obliterated, then other fruits were introduced into my diet again. This is probably exactly what Brit needs after all the donuts and ho hos she was scoffing down....and man was that a lot!

She is doing phase 1 of the South Beach Diet, which is very strict and does not allow you to eat sugars, not even fruit. But you can only do it for 2 weeks after that you start incorporating good carbs (wholewheat) and good sugars(Fruits).

Cutting out fruit is too extreme...for me, fruit is a lifesaver for diering because of the high water content!
