Turkey Pot Hold-the-Pie – A Delish Dish For Dogs

The look on this cav's face says it all – yum-o! Although, the pot pie is crustless (and served cooled to room temperature), I think pups will still love it even without the warm-your-tum or pie parts that I think of with this dish.

Learn how to make the veggie-filled, pet-friendly recipe from the September issue of Everyday Day With Rachael Ray when you read more.

Every Day With Rachael Ray (September 2008)

Your K9 companion will get their fill of this crustless potpie! (It’s like comfort food for dogs!)

Turkey Pot Hold-the-Pie

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
¼ pound deli-sliced turkey, chopped
1 cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed
2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley

Directions
In a small skillet, heat the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour for 1 minute, then whisk in the chicken broth and bring to a boil over high heat. Lower the heat and simmer until thickened, 2 to 3 minutes.
Stir in the turkey, veggies and parsley and cook until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes. Let cool to almost room temperature, then serve.

No way would I feed that to Cuba. Butter, flour, and deli meat is horrible for dogs.

Is this okay for pups? I would love to do, but worry about the aftermath (tummy trouble)....isaboo is one lucky puppy if she is eating chicken pot pie every night!

cubadog--Deli meat isn't bad for dogs depending what it is and in moderation. Chicken, pork, ham and beef are all safe foods for dogs along with some others. I feed Zena most types of meat. I only feed her 3 baby pieces whenever we have meat.

Flour is the one you have to be careful about. Most flour contains yeast, which is unhealthy for your pooch. It can rupture the stomach and intestines.

I wouldn't dare give this to Zena though. Rachael Ray has no certification on dog food recipes. She's a human food chef, not doggy chef. I feed Zena rice and chicken for a special human meal for her. It's infinitely healthier for Zena and helps her digestive system stay in working order.

Ellenora we will have to agreet to disagree on deli meat. Cuba is actually on a raw diet and has been since he came home from the breeder.
