Hiccups. They can be so annoying, especially if they take a long time to go away like this poor girl who had hiccups for more than 3 weeks.
What causes hiccups? It's actually an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm. The sudden rush of air into your lungs causes the glotis (the space between your vocal cords) to close, which is what makes that "hic" sound.
Well, however they started, Fit wants to know: How do you get rid of your hiccups? Let me know in the comments section below.

usually drinking water with a spoon in the glass, rested against my forehead works for me.
1if that doesn't work, i drink a glass of water while i have my head between my knees.
My traditional method is holding my breath. The untraditional method I use when needed is holding my breath while thinking of a cow while holding a metal spoon to my temple. I don't know why it works, but I think its the focus on something that is NOT the hiccups.
2well, sometimes i hiccup once when i am full, or when i have waited too long to eat. other than that, i jsut try to not think about it. I have had them for 2 hours straight before, it was miserable, and the only thing that made them go away is i focused on other stuff and suddenly they weren't there.
3drink water from the other side of the glass rim. To do it wihtout spilling anything your head usually has to go between your knees.
4Take 7 big sips of water. Or 10, but 7 are usually enough. If that doesn't work, try to remember what you had for dinner 8 days ago. - Sounds stupid but the thinking distracts you from the hiccups and you automatically relax.
5Trying to drink an entire glass of water in one go - unless you're really good at it, it forces you to hold your breath. I used to try to hold my breath the usual way but it seemed to NEVER work and it was sooo frustrating, until someone told me to try the water trick - it's worked every time.
6Waiting it out is usually the only thing that works for me. I get horrible hiccups that hurt my clavicle because of the force of the hiccups. Also, they last for usually hours at a time and then I'll get them the next day too. Quite weird, I know. My uncle once gave me a lemon wedge to suck on when I got them and that seemed to work at the time, but I've tried that since and drinking straight Rose's Lime and neither seem to work for me anymore.
7Hmm.. mine is actually just the opposite. I put all my focus into it! If I have the hiccups I usually make myself wait for it and tell myself to snap my fingers (or something!) right before I think it's about to come. Weird, yes. But it works!
8another remedy someone told me about that has worked for me before is to place a paper towel over the top of a glass of water and drink THROUGH the paper towel.
9This is the weirdest thing, I'm sat here surfing the interweb, hiccuping like mad I click on this page and what do u know hiccups...I'll try out some of your suggestions±!!
10I know this sounds weird but seriously it works. My step mom told me to stick out my tongue and put a little sugar on it, wait for it to dissolve and swallow. Hiccups never stay long with me as long as this method works.
11I usually get the hiccups after I eat something. I had them three times yesterday. I haven't figured out how to stop them.. But holding my breath doesn't help me. I will definately try these suggestions out. I'm always up for a good remedy to them.
12someone mentioned sucking on a lemon... The way i get rid of my hiccups is to bite down onto a wedge of lime...bite down onto the lime and keep it there until ur jaw starts to hurt...It's worked for everyone i've had try it... i cocktail at a LV casino so there's always lime wedges handy....
13ok--this has seriously NEVER failed me. I learned it from a lady who I was trying to sell Girl Scout cookies to when I was 12--but I couldn't get out my sales pitch 'cause I was hiccuping! What you do is have someone stand behind you and hold their fingers in your ears. There is a bump of cartilidge right where your ear is attached to you head. They should push that into the opening of your ear so there is a seal (ie. pretty hard). Then you must drink an big glass of water without stopping for breath while they are holding your ears. Works every time.
14I usually hold my breath for about in minute then breathe in and out sloowwllyy to relax myself! seems to work quite well with me
15pretending like I don't have hiccups - is my cure for hiccups. I had hiccups for a week straight, they were about every 5 seconds. NOT COOL. It was painful and tiring and after a while I would hyper ventilate if I tried to walk around or talk at the same time with the hiccups. Finally at the ER after getting a MRI to make sure there were no lesions on my diaphragm causing the hiccups they give me a shot directly into my diaphragm to relax it, put me on a vent temporarily and shocked on diaphragm with a low dose of electricity while I was out. When I came around about two to three hours later and they removed the vent - no hiccups. Everything was reset. I haven't had hiccups that bad since. I still get them but I just relax and ignore them and bingo they go away without any notice.
16I eat a spoonful of peanut butter! It usually works for me. My mom does the ear cartilidge-popping trick. When I don't have peanut butter, I usually down a glass of water quickly.
My favorite is when other people have hiccups, I'll say "I will give you $20 if you hiccup again." And I keep pressuring them to hiccup saying "C'mon! Do it! I dare you!" It usually works and I keep my money.
17I agree with llendril, either a paper towel or a coffee filter, it has worked for me and my friends many times, though I am not sure if it is just in my head...oh well, it still works!
18I used to hold my breath for as long as possible to prevent any further hiccups, but I soon realized that that doesnt work. However, following my mom's instructions, every time I have a hiccup now, I slowly take 7-10 small sips of warm water, and VOILA, my hiccups are gone. It's always worked for me, and I swear by this method.
19i swallow when i feel one coming on (sometimes i count the time in between hiccups to get the right timing). it always works for me.so weird.
20Drink a glass of water through a straw without stopping until empty. While drinking plug your nose with your pinkies and your ears with your thumbs. This creates a type of vacuum. This has never not worked. Guaranteed.
21I agree, spoonful of peanut butter, or a spoonful of sugar and tap water. Or there is a nerve in your neck you can pinch (probably the same nerve as the ear trick, just in a different place...) that my dad presses on to make them stop.
22i usually hold me breath and that works immediately
23Hold your breath and swallow 3 times. Its hard to do but always works. Another trick is to let a teaspoon of sugar dissolve in your mouth.
24taking in gulps of air WORKS!!!!!!
25a BIG sppoonful of peanut butter... or the holding your breathe for 15secs
26I just had bad hiccups last weekend on Saturday night
They lasted for a few hours and started
when I was drinking so it was pretty embarassing when I would try and tell people I wasn't drunk then would hiccup. I'll try some of these tricks though next time- and peanut butter? Mmm!
27the most failproof way to cure someone else's hiccups is to, completely seriously, offer them $100 if they hiccup one more time. you have to be totally sincere. they will put so much focus into hiccuping again they won't be able to. works everytime! unfortunately it doesn't help if you're the one with the hiccups
28Hilarious story, CestLaVie!!
According to Bill Nye the Science Guy, hiccups occur when something happens to short out our epiglottis, the muscle that directs food down one pipe (esophagus) and air down another (trachea). If something happens to confuse what your brain is telling your epiglottis to do, that's when it shorts out and you get hiccups.
That's why holding your breath or drinking water helps so much. It forces you to firmly tell your epiglottis: "OPEN TO THE TRACHEA" or "OPEN TO THE ESOPHAGUS" and kind of "reboots" the muscle.
29Oops, I'm retarderd. Forgot to close my link. That's better.
30My grandma always had me do what others have said, drinking water from the other side of the glass, or a spoonful of sugar too. Or the always favorite, have someone scare you!
31I agree with the "buying the hiccups" thing. My friends and I all have an understanding, that if one of us is hiccuping, we offer them something they want to continue, and then they can't
32According to my mom, I have been getting the hiccups constantly since before birth. I get them at least 5 times a week, so I have had lots of opportunities to figure out the best way to get rid of them. I hold my breath and at the same time swallow 3 to 5 drinks of water quickly. It gets rid of them every time. Try it next time!
33Holding my breath and swallowing a couple times usually does it. Works for everyone I have suggested it to.
34I pinch my nose and hold my breath for about 15 seconds. I also drink water from the opposite side of the glass, at knee-level like most have suggested. I've had the water go "down the wrong tube" before.....which is horrible. :-/
35Hahaha on the billy nye the science guy comment, Livience! I loved his show! lol
*Bill Nye oops
