Yet Another Recall? Beef From Whole Foods

Sorry to spread the bad news, but we have yet another recall to deal with. Whole Foods voluntarily recalled more than 1.2 million pounds of ground beef that has come from Coleman Natural Beef's Nebraska Beef processing plant. It pains me to say it but E. coli strikes again. Over 31 illnesses in 12 US states and Canada have been linked to this contaminated meat, but officials have yet to name the states (not sure what's up with that). Apparently this recall comes after the same company recalled 5.3 million pounds of meat a month ago, that was linked to at least 49 cases of E. coli. Geez.

The beef in the 24 Whole Foods locations in Northern California are not involved, since their meat comes from Country Natural Beef in Oregon, a supplier not listed in the beef recall. Another chain, Fred Meyers, is also pulling meat from their shelves. The ground beef in question was sold between July 2 and Aug. 6. If you're concerned about the beef at your local Whole Foods or natural grocery store, it's best to contact the store directly.

The USDA is still investigating, so I'm sure more info will be coming. It's just so upsetting that these recalls continue to plague our food system. Does this latest recall inspire you to start eating veggie burgers?

This is kind of scary. Thank goodness I haven't bought beef from Whole Foods in a few weeks, only bison.

Well, I don't buy meat at Whole Foods b/c it's ridiculously expensive, but nope, no veggie burgers for me. After giving up tomatoes for months b/c of the FDA's mistake, I'm so sick of this stuff that my new motto is "screw it, I'll take my chances."

I shop at Whole Foods often but I am a vegetarian so I never buy meat. This is getting kind of crazy and it seems that nothing is safe anymore unless you grow it yourself. I have only managed to get tomatoes to grow but I hope my fall garden goes better.

lucky for me i'm already a vegetarian, so i don't have to worry at all about this one - but it's really getting to be frustrating about all these recalls. wasn't there just a HUGE beef recall a year or so ago? it's just really hard to feel safe eating anything anymore. first mad cow - then bad beef, then tomatoes, spinach - and everything else. ugh! we need to figure out ways to avoid this one!

Ahh... And that's why I'm glad #1 I don't eat beef very often, and #2 when I do, I order if extra in my CSA, and I know what farm here in TN it's coming from.

Also, is it really that hard to keep food safe? Dear lord people, learn how to run a freakin' farm!

I agree with Jesse777. I feel like today our foods are so processed and inbred that who knows what we're eating any more... Maybe I should get into gardening in my urban NYC somehow
