Relax Already: Adopt a Mantra

We've talked about our own workout mantras before, but mantras are amazing little things. They not only motivate you, a good mantra can also work to relieve stress, too. In fact mantras can help people stay calm by easing frustration and tension.

In the most simplest of terms, mantras can quiet your mind. Mantras are one of the easiest, and not to mention cheapest, ways to calm yourself down. A mantra is just a phrase or word that you tell yourself. Eventually your mind will associate your phrase with serenity; it's kind of like Pavlov's dogs and the bell. So find a phrase and when you're really feeling stressed, take a few minutes to quiet your mind and repeat it to yourself over and over until you start to feel the stress and tension release. The simplest mantra is just the word "breathe." It is one syllable and a good reminder to slow down and breathe deeply.

Do you already have a mantra when you are stressed? If so, share it below.

Whenever I'm really stressed, I stop and say "Just do one thing at a time and get through it". It really works and it stops me from getting flustered.

If I am feeling challenged or scared I say "I can do this. I can do anything." It really helps.

    just keep swimming!

lame, ok, but it helps me to just keep up and keep going; i can get frustrated later! i don't have one for working out, though, maybe i should because i'm always breathing wrong.

    itsme3683 - "just keep swimming!"

I love that. That would be so fun to tell myself... if I had a nearby pool to swim in. Or a gym with a pool nearby. All of the gyms by me are ..pool-less. Swimming is ssso much more fun than working out. Dancing is almost as much fun.. but you're lucky! Keep your mantra up.

When I was in boot camp my drill instructor had many mantras for us. I was terrible at push ups, always putting my butt in the air. He would say, Blank get your a$$ down and do some work. It was really funny. So whenever I'm in a tight spot, I close my eyes and say...get your a$$ down and do some work. It's never failed.
