Backyard games are a way of making a BBQ fun, instead of sedentary. To keep yourself from lounging with beer bottle in hand, you should investigate Ladder Golf ($100), aka Blongo. The word golfis a little misleading because there are no clubs or holes involved in Ladder Golf, and sorry, no golf carts either. It's a game of hand-eye coordination, but I'd explain it more as a glorified tossing game, similar to horseshoes.
For Blongo, there are two goals (that look like laundry drying racks) and two teams. The game is played in rounds and each player on the team alternates throwing three bolas (also called BlongoBalls), which are short nylon ropes with a golf ball attached to either end. Each team's objective is to toss the bolas in such a way that the BlongoBall gets stuck on a ladder rung. Points are determined by which rung your bola hangs from, and the team that reaches an exact score of 21 is the winner. Check out laddergolf.com for the official set of rules and etiquette.
OK, so I admit that this game involves about as much action as a game of Bocce Ball or Croquet, but at least you're tossing a ball-like thing instead of tossing chips into your mouth. Plus any kind of game that gets you on your feet is good in my opinion.

Croquet is intense...especially when it is extreme croquet which I play at school..wikipedia it, it's amazing
1My friends made a set for about 20 bucks out of pvc tubes and golf balls attached to each other with rope. No need to spend 100 bucks on a set.
2My cousins call it hillbilly horseshoes... and made there sets out of pvc and golfballs with twine.
3God, extreme croquet sounds kind of dangerous! I mean those "mallets" (Is that what they're called? ) aren't the safest thing in the world...
Anyway, this game never appealed to me. I rather stick to Bocce Ball.
4My in laws have these in their back yard. It is both fun and addictive. As a matter of fact my father in law makes his own with pvc pipes.
5My friend's parents have this out at the lake house - we played it for the first time this summer and really had a blast! We just split into teams and enjoyed it - obviously it's not going to be a challenging game, but it's nice because you can still enjoy talking with each other and goofing around.

7that looks like it's kind of fun - but sadly i don't have any where to set it up so it's probably just going to be a game that i admire from afar.
even though it's not a physically tiring game doesn't mean that it's not fun. think about it - you're at a family bbq or something similar and you want something to do that can occupy kids (older-ish kids i guess because of coordination) - and this will do the trick.

10This is SUCH a fun game to play on the beach. I absolutely have a blast every time I play.
11ahh we play this all the time. we call it tailgate golf tho, and its only fun when drunk
12We play this at my friends' house between dips in the pool. But the version we had was made of cheaper plastic and we managed to snap two of the rungs on it! (Duct tape to the rescue!)
Between this and Cornhole, there's plenty of fun to be had with a beer in your hand!
