In case you missed it, the Olympic games open this Friday, and I am awfully excited to watch. Gymnastics tops my list of events to see, and Shawn Johnson is the gymnast to watch. Not only did she just win a Teen Choice Award for Choice Female Athlete, she also won the women's all-around title in the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Pretty impressive resume for a 16-year-old.

Here are five things to know about Shawn:
- Her strength training routine doesn't involve weights; instead, she performs classic calisthenics like push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups.
- Shawn is four feet, nine inches tall and weighs 90 pounds ( a healthy BMI, by the way).
- She attends high school in Des Moines, Iowa.

- Images of Shawn currently appear on Coke and McDonald's products. A butter sculpture of Shawn will appear soon at the Iowa state fair — quite a compliment in the Midwest.
- She works out four hours a day during the week and six hours on Saturdays. Her workouts generally follow this schedule: Half an hour of conditioning, stretching, and endurance training, then 50 minutes on each of the four events. Her workouts end with focused "extra tricks."

She's way cute(and talented!) and I like that she doesn't look like a child. She looks like a 16 year old young lady despite her small size.
1wow, that is some pretty heavy training...
2seriously! it's admirable that a someone could attend high school and train on this level.
3I was a gymnast for 13 years and quit becuase the training was getting way too intense. I was spending all my time at the gym!
4What about the rest of the team?
5I like Lukin better.
6DAAAAANG. She works out A LOT. I don't know about high school, but I have no idea how she's going to manage that in college. That's so intense! Also, I just want to say that I got a bit excited reading about her height because she's shorter than me! I guess all gymnasts have to be short, though...But I don't know any, so I'm always the butt of jokes.
7Speaking as someone who planned a vacation around making sure I could see the women's gymnastics all-around finals (seriously), I think she's adorable!
8she is amazing I cant wait
oh and to the above comment most are over the hill by college and she actually practices less than the others i think.
9I am so excited for the gymnastics! I was absolutely convinced that I was the next Mary Lou Retton way back in 1984. I even had the stars and stripes leotard. It was hot.
10yeah, I think she's actually somewhat unusual in terms of how light her training schedule. I believe 6-8 hrs/day was more the norm. Four hours is a good amount of training, but also not that much more time than a lot of h.s. kids spend in their extracurriculars. I really applaud her for being able to balance her schedule in a healthy way.
11that should be: "how light her training schedule IS." argh.
12ballet is better
13Are you bored by life in general and by the countless insipid and inane blogs you encounter while trying to find something amusing, stimulating and interesting? Do you yearn for intelligent and thought provoking chit-chat instead of the mindless, dull and semi-coherent drivel spewed out by the countless feeble minds that infest the blogosphere? Are you tired of communicating only with people who talk the way you do and think the way you do? Do you crave an adventure of the mind and are not afraid to brave the unknown landscape at the border of lunacy to find it? Well then, pack up your intellectual gear and start out bravely for I am waiting for YOU at HTTP://theyeshivabucher.blogspot.com
Shalom and zei gezunt until then!
14Shawn Johnson is my all time favorite...
