I know you have been through this. You finally convince yourself to go to the gym and when you arrive the gym is crowded. All your favorite cardio machines are full. Frustrated since you planned on hopping on the treadmill, or the elliptical or the stairstepper, now you can't. The options are endless. You could work out on a type of machine you rarely use, or you could split. What do you do?

I normally have cardio first, then followed by weights. If all my favorite machines are gone, I will go for the weights first, followed by cardio machine.
1I work out at home and jog outside, since I can't stand gyms.

3This only happens to me when I need to use the arc trainer (I alternate between arc trainer and treadmill) It seems to be the most popular cardio equipment at my gym. If they are all taken, I will use the elliptical. If the ellipticals are all taken (which is rare), I think I will start doing the same thing lydialee_home does (do weights first).

7I would slink around my favorite machines and hope someone gets off within 5 minutes, if not I would do weights close by and then jump on first chance I get. haha
8i hateee when people at my college gym will just sit around and wait (up to 30 minutes) for an elliptical machine when there are bajillions of treadmills open. why even go to the gym if ur going to sit around for that long?
9my gym only has four elliptical machines, but i'm usually there early enough in the morning that i get one every time. the few times that i didn't i went for the treadmill.
10If all the treadmills, elliptical and bikes are taken then I use the Stepmill or stairmaster.
11I tend to use the stationary bike until one of the treadmills opens. But I'm pretty picky about which treadmills in the gym I use, since some of them feel off balance and shake a lot more than others.
12I run outside like a real person. Machines are lame.
13I have a cardio machine hierarchy, since my gym doesn't have that many machines. My first choice is the elliptical, but there's only 3, so I'll then go for the treadmill. If all of those are taken (there are 5), I'll use the rower or the step climber. I usually get whatever I want because I show up a few minutes early and you have to sign up for the cardio machines beforehand.
14I don't have a "favorite" cardio machine since I try to switch it up as much as possible - I'd just hop on whatever machine was open!
15I wait for a machine to open up. If something else is open, like a bike, I will do that while I wait. Otherwise I try to get in some light stretching, as the wait isn't usually too long.
16Trust me, angelfromlsu, if it weren't 110 degrees outside with humidity, depending on the monsoon storm that day, I would be running outside. I can't wait for fall.
17I like the elliptical the most, But I run on the treadmill also.

It's pretty hot here in Louisiana. I just consider it conditioning. I am pretty awful b/c I don't hydrate as much as I should.
19Weights first, then cardio if my machine is taken. After reserving the machine after the user, of course.
20We have treadclimbers in my gym and they are SO popular! It's because it's basically walking only it's supposed to burn "twice as many calories" as running. Psh, whatevs.
I like to do like 15 minutes on one though because it works my calves and thigh muscles nicely. If it's taken then I hop on a ski machine (cardio wave, not eliptical) behind and wait for one to open up. Or I'll go on a spin bike.
21This only happened to me once...all the cardio machines were taken, so I tried the rowing machine because I had heard decent things about them. Wow, was it ever a killer workout! I was dripping in sweat afterwards and I was sore in places I didn't even know could be sore the next day.
22On my cardio days I usually hit two different machines (rower/elliptical, treadmill/recumbent bike, stepmill/treadmill, etc.) so I'm basically always able to find one of the two free at any given time.
23I come back later.
24It's rare when the treadmill is taken since my sister and I get to the gym after work right before the evening rush. However, if they do happen to be taken, I usually wait, or I hope on the step climber for 10 mins.
25I will typically first go to the elliptical, and if it is busy I will mosey on over to the treadmill and if those are all taken, the stair master is my 3rd option, while I keep my eye open to see when someone gets off the other machines!
