You Asked: Why Do I Get Bit by Mosquitos More?

You're asking and I'm answering . . .

"Hey Fit. I've noticed that mosquitoes are really attracted to me. If I go hiking with my friends, they'll walk out of the woods itch free and I'll wind up with at least 10 mosquito bites. I just assumed I had sweet blood, but there's got to be something more. Any ideas?"
Sweet Sara

I feel your pain, or rather itch. The same thing happens to me, almost to the point that bug spray doesn't even seem to detract the pesky bites. I did a little research on WebMD so read more to find out what I learned.

It all is a matter, once again, of genetics. Here's why:

"People with high concentrations of steroids or cholesterol on their skin surface attract mosquitoes," Jerry Butler, PhD, professor emeritus at the University of Florida, tells WebMD. That doesn't necessarily mean that mosquitoes prey on people with higher overall levels of cholesterol, Butler explains. These people simply may be more efficient at processing cholesterol, the byproducts of which remain on the skin's surface."

Apparently along with cholesterol and steroids on your skin, mosquitoes are also attracted to certain acids (lactic acids, uric acids, etc.), heat, and carbon dioxide — which can all increase with activity like volleyball or hiking. So if you're moving around and exercising outdoors then you become a prime target for the little buggers before they land on your skin. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot you can do if the bugs bite you more than anyone else you know, but loading up on the insect repellent can help. WebMD also suggests keeping activity to a minimum when outdoors, but you can probably guess how I feel about that . . .

but you'll repel people as well, MindayH.

I hate that when I go out to the park with my friends or ona date I want to smell very nice and put on my perfume, but it attrackts those buggers even more. And the smell of anti-bug spray is so unattractive... even to myself.

I swear everytime I go camping I'm the ONLY one to be attacked. And it's not just mosquitos, I get it from spiders too. My mom always told me it's because I have sweet blood haha

Taking Vitamin B complex really helps. It repels the mosquitoes but doesn't repel your friends.

Yep, I'm the same way. Could be 50 people in my backyard and one mosquito and guess who gets bitten? :Sigh:

I'm wondering if anyone here has the same problem as me? Not only do I get bitten a lot, but my bites are HUGE. Like as in, they swell up to mammoth proportions for a mosquito bite. When I was a little kid, they were only little and disappeared in a day or two. For example, I currently have one on the side of my leg that is as big as a golf ball and growing. It actually hurts for me to bend my leg! Anyone have a remedy for this? I've been to the doctor for it before because once I was bitten on my ankle and couldn't walk for three days - the only thing they could suggest was that I take an antihistamine like Benadryl and just use lots of bite cream with hydrocortizone. But it does nothing. Sad Ow.

I've just come back from Rhodes, and I have around 20 bites.
I went to Poland a few years ago, to the beach, and I got about 3 bites on my ankle which caused my foot to balloon up.

Wow, I didn't know steriods attract them!
No wonder it happens to me.
With my asthma I am required to take medication that has a low level of steriods in it...and the mosquitos LOVE me.

I think I have a spider bite right now. It started itching again today and I think it's because another bug bit me in the same place. I swell up terribly with all bug bites.

bigestdiscuit, it sounds like you are pretty allergic to mosquito bites. Mine get pretty big too, but not as big as that. So it's not surprising that the doc told you to take some antihistamines to help. And yeah, hydrocortizon will help with the swelling. Not much else you can do, as far as I know. Sad Maybe you could try some of these other remedies people suggested here...

What really irks me is that (I was wearing an all black/gray outfit, btw) I was bitten THROUGH my leggings. It must have been hungry. One time, I was in a store and a man saw my leg (I had been bitten three times and I looked like I had a tumor on my calf and thigh) and he was so concerned he came up to suggest a remedy.

I have the same issues with mosquitoes... I'm the first and only one to get bitten up and I have a terrible reaction to them. Last week at a nightclub, just sitting at a booth inside and not even dancing yet, I got bit twice... one on the top of my foot and the other in the foot arch. Ridiculous. And no one else got bit! Grr.

huh, I'm going to have to try some of these things. I tend to attract biters AND have a worse reaction than most people I know. Vitamin B and garlic, coming right up ...

oh, god, I have the same problem...when I visited Alaska a few summers ago, I had huge bites on my forehead and ones on my right ankle that got so swollen I was limping for days and icing my leg at night! they're not normally THAT bad, thankfully, but I do seem to get more bites than anyone else I'm around

jelibeann - I have to ice mine as well. It's the only thing that will take the swelling down. And there are times when they itch SO badly, I put them (this is really bad) under scalding hot water because it's the only thing that relieves it! Sorry, TMI ... glad to know I'm not the only one.

applying hydrogen peroxide to the bites with cotton pads and using a Rx strength itch cream works...I found this out when I was nearly sucked dry in Hawaii, ugh some vacation... Sad

    oh, and definitely a non-drowsy anti-histamine
