A lot of us have major issues with folks talking on their phones at the gym — it can be distracting during an otherwise peaceful time. Checking your BlackBerry or text messaging, on the other hand, is not nearly as distracting for the other gym goers, but it could spoil the relaxing part out of going to the gym for you.
It's not abnormal, Medical News Today reported that one in 10 people who head to the gym check their phones and email and text while working out. I'll admit it, sometimes I'll take my BlackBerry with me on the treadmill if I am waiting for an important email. Naturally I am curious about you, do you email and/or text while at the gym?

If someone texts me I'll text back, but its not like I'm checking my e-mail.
1I usually don't check my texts while I'm working out, but if I'm waiting for something important then I may do so.
2I text if I am doing cardio. Sometimes it's what I need to kind of "forget" what I am doing and I usually work harder in the end!
3If I'm expecting something important, yeah, I'll check. But generally, I consider my time at the gym...ME time.
4I think it's very poor etiquette to bring a communication item on to the gym floor with you.
Life can wait till you finish your fitness. Respect yourself enough to dedicate time to your body and mind.
5I completely agree with the Missus. It bothers me so much when people are on their cell phones at the gym. Txting and Emailing is less of a distration to me, but what is the point of working out if you're not focused on the workout?
6Yeah, it kind of annoys me too. I mean, why not just wait an hour? I leave my phone in my locker or in the car when I'm working out.
7I would fall on my ass if I tried to text or email while running! I don't bring my phone to the gym, or if I do, it's locked up in the locker room. Besides, I don't want my iphone to get sweaty.
8I don't think its poor etiquette to simply have a phone out at the gym. I keep my cell phone with me so I'm reachable in cases of an emergency. If someone texts me and its time sensitive, I reply. It's not like I'm unfocused on my workout. But when I'm doing an hour of cardio on one machine, I'm not going full speed the whole time, so it's very easy for me to respond to texts at certain intervals.
9I only take my phone in with me if I'm expecting something. And when I do I make sure its on silent. It seems like the gym is the one place where people aren't glued to their cell phone...its kinda nice!
10I was actually doing it this morning! It helps take my mind off what I'm doing and I end up working harder.
11I don't, but there's a guy that walks around our gym all the time playing with his cell phone. I don't know what he's doing, but I don't think I've ever seen him actually lifting weights or using a treadmill. Maybe the gym is where he feels comfortable conducting business? Maybe gyms are replacing Starbucks as the new trendy business atmosphere?
12I don't take my phone into the gym with me. Most of my things stay in my car aside from a towel, yoga mat, keys, iPod and water bottle.
13I just don't buy the whole, "I keep my cell with me no the gym floor in case of an emergency" bit.
I'm sorry... But how likely is it that you're going have an emergency in that hour that you are at the gym? And, if you have a situation (like a sick family member or child) that you want to reach you at any time, give them the number to the gym. That way, you can be paged if it is a real emergency.
I know WAAAY to many people with kids who's children just call them "whenever" for "Whatever" reason. It's never an emergency.
14My gym has a no cell phone rule that makes me happy. I find it distracting to have people on cell phones and unsafe too if they are on treadmills, etc with it.
15Well that's fine for you TheMissus, but I shouldn't have to give out the gym number for people to reach me, I also don't give out a schedule of when I'll be at the gym to the people I care about, so how would they even know to reach me there? Even if all of that wasn't a factor I wouldn't hear the page because I have my music up loudly. My phone on silent (but where I can see if it's ringing) doesn't hurt anyone, so if I want to have my phone available to me it's a perfectly valid choice. Just because you know kids that call there parents all the time, never for an emergency, doesn't mean real emergencies don't occur in which I would need to be reached. I'm not disrespecting anyone with my choice so I'm not sure why anyone else would care.
16I don't even bring my phone into the gym! And I despise when people are sitting on their phones near me, its so annoying.
17nah, gym is for working out, keeping up with the program is hard enought without any distractions.
18It smacks of self importance, IMHO.
19There's not much that's SOOOOO important that you need to know it this-very-minute. If there IS a true emergency, I see no problem with keeping your phone on you to accept an emergency call, but you have to respect your fellow gym-goers...no one really wants to watch you putzing around on your BlackBerry or iPhone or whatever. Your primary focus should be working out.
20I have an iPhone, so there have been times I was listening while on the treadmill when a call came in. If happened to be a work call. I am a video editor and it was the person who digitizes footage for me in the evening. If I hadn't of taken the call, it would of caused me issues the next day.
BUT, before I had the iPhone, I NEVER brought my phone with me. Well... except for the time I had to wait on the cable guy to come. You know how that works, they give you like a FIVE hour window, then call when they are on there way. There's no way I was just gonna sit on my ass at home waiting for them to come!
21never!
22it's funny - i'm ADDICTED to my BB or phone 24 hours a day usually but the time that i'm at the gym is probably the ONLY time that i'm not connected and i'm happy about that. i think that it's sooo irritating when there are people on their phones while they are working out. i figure that you can't possibly be working out very hard if you're talking to someone right? and what's annoying is when people are having loud conversations on their phone right next to you. that's one of my BIGGEST gym pet peeves
23yes but i'd rather text because i don't want my blackberry to get all sweaty. gross! besides i'm paranoid that the little ball that you have to have to make it work will break if too much dirt gets in it.
