If you're a label reader like me, you may have noticed the ingredient tocopherols on your food. I know it sounds like a toxic chemical, but they are actually naturally occurring fat-soluble alcohols found in milk, lettuce, and wheat germ oil that behave similarly to vitamin E. Scientists figured out how to isolate this compound into a light yellow liquid, and manufacturers add it to their products to boost the amount of vitamin E in their foods. Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant, and it also protects oils and fats from going bad, so it's a natural way to keep foods fresh.

A-tocopherol is a common form of tocopherol, so if you see either of these in your food, now you know these food additives are safe.
