Reality Check: Victoria Beckham Eats?

Posh is so often in the limelight for her fashion choices that her body is often the subject of discussion too. Uber slim Victoria Beckham defended her eating habits in the recent issue of Allure. Here's what she had to say about her diet:

"I'm very strict in the way I eat. I eat lots of fish, vegetables, fruit, Japanese food. I don't eat junk food. I'm really healthy; my kids are really healthy; David's really healthy. Of course I eat. I've been accused of not eating for ten years. If I hadn't eaten for ten years, I'd be [awfully] hungry."

I appreciate her dry British humor. She does exercise as well, and like most of us she feels guilty about not working out more.

" I try to make the best of what I got. I like to do Pilates, even though I should go more often . . . I'd like to go to the gym more often but with three children, I don't have the time. I'm 34 years old. I accept the way I look."

Whether she is naturally skinny or "starving," self-acceptance is an important lesson that seems to come along with being over thirty. What do you think?

I respect her because she admits that she's strict with her diet and works out when she can. She's not saying she can eat whatever she wants and look like that. I hope I look like her at the age of 34!

I'm happy that she isnt one of those stars that claims to eat donuts and still look good. She admits to being super strict and working out. How refreshing! and honest. I also hope that I look half as good as she does when I am over 30.

You know, she gets an awful lot of flack for her size and I just don't get it. To me she does not appear to be a very tall woman so her size and shape seem appropriate to me. I really like her from what I've seen and read and sadly a lot of people make harsh comments about people her size either out of jealously or guilt that they aren't as strict with themselves when they know they should be. I say just worry about yourself and take care of yourself and let others do the same (even if they are in the public eye). And that's my soap box for today. Smiling

Yeah I appreciate her honesty and she looks amazing- I doubt it's hard for her to be self-accepting of her body, I'm sure she can't lost more weight.

I think she's full of it. Great, she admitted to being strict--does anyone really think that a human being with bones jutting out all over the place ISN'T strict with their diet? Strict is a substitute for STARVING. Comments on her weight (or lack thereof) don't always stem from jealousy. Sometimes they come from people who are wise enough to realize that the eating and exercise habits needed to maintain a body like that are anything but healthy.

Posh Spice as a role model for self-acceptance? This is the woman who buys ice cream cones for her kids while wearing stilettos and carrying a 10,000 dollar handbag. Her body is rail-thin and still she bemoans the changes that come with age--she may "accept" the way she looks, but she's clearly not satisfied with it. She's certainly not the kind of role model I'd want young girls looking up to.

i think that she eats - but at least she's honest about it. you know that there's no way for her to be that tiny and say that she eats junk like a lot of other celebs claim. the other point that we all need to remember is that she's had 3 kids - and that partly - she's able to work off any cals with them since they are active boys..and the other piece is that if she starved herself, then it would have been a challenge for her in that dept.

I have a feeling she does not have that much self-acceptance.

She looks great, but she looked better when a little fuller and healthier looking. The near-extreme thinness actually ages her. Women should learn self-acceptance far before their thirties, because it is a weakness people prey upon.

Women often gain this self-acceptance after they no longer feel pressured to be a sex object. Think about it: if you are not consumed with wanting to be considered sexy, you may just learn to love your body with all of its flaws.

Sure, age should not keep anyone from being sexy, but the fact is younger women are lusted over more in general and plenty of young women get swept up in trying to be seen as primarily attractive, rather than intelligent, talented, etc. Once a woman is settled into a life and career, things like looking "hot" are not the first priority.

You can either stop trying to be attractive (which some women do) or you can do your best and start seeing yourself as attractive. It is all about balance and depth of character. Beautiful ladies age far better than random "hot chicks" do.

I really like her and don't understand why people trash her around so much. If she wants to look thin that is her business. I do think people are jealous (why being so angry at her if they are not?)Women/Men who don't like that type of body just ignore her and let her be. Self dedication is something a lot of people wish they could have...

Self acceptance is great, but there is also nothing wrong with wanting to look better. There's nothing wrong with having a strict diet either if it's not a big deal to the person and if they don't obsess over it, it's just a personal decision.

stephaniegee I agree. I have no problem with VB, I actually think she has a great personality. But facts are facts, shes underweight. Therefore - shes not healthy!

Shes the kind of skinny I dont want to be. Give me Jessica Biels bod any day! I want to feel, be and LOOK fit. Skins and bodys are not my thing.

The thing is, who defines what "strict" means? I eat a strict diet — only vegetarian foods, no corn syrup outside of two Cokes a month, and as organic as possible. But I love food and eat a ton of it. For someone else, "strict" may mean "I eat two pieces of lettuce for lunch, and occasionally I indulge in a finger-sized piece of fish."

I love that she is open and upfront about being strict with herself. It's obvious by her weight and figure that she is, but a lot of celebrities like to pretend they were just graced by mother nature and it comes across as extremely pretentious, at least to me. She's admitting she isn't perfect, she has to work at it like the rest of the world.

Most celebs DID weigh more in the mid-late 90s. (Look at Teri Hatcher, for one.) The new "thin" is much thinner as it was back then. If you want to get free clothes from designers (not that she can't afford them anyway!), you have to be a size 2 or zero, as those are the sizes the runway and sample clothes are made in. I found this quote from Liv Tyler from last year as an example:
    http://www.jossip.com/quoted-liv-tyler-on-celeb-dieting-20070215/

Of course, size is all relative anyway. I like Posh fine, but I really don't care what she eats or how much she works out. It doesn't affect my "bottom line".

As someone who typically weighs between 90 to 95 pounds but is perfectly healthy, I can say from personal experience that it must be annoying to be constantly bombarded with the "EAT SOMETHING! YOU MUST BE HUNGRY!" comments. It sounds like she's simply very disciplined, and probably genetically programmed to stay thin fairly easily.

I've always liked VB in interviews because she seems so shy and contained. I feel bad that she always has to defend herself all the time especially to people who are probably way more unhealthy than she is.

She's not being ALL that honest about her diet. She says she eats "lots" of fruits, veggies, Japanese foods, etc., but she DOESN'T say that she eats roughly 900 calories a day (according to the diet her trainer had her on). True, you can fit more food into 900 calories if you eat healthy stuff, but 900 calories is 900 calories, no matter how you look at it. I think she needs to gain a little weight back to look healthy again. She looked really good back in her Spice Girls days.

I actually really like the way she comes across in interviews; I think she seems like she actually has an approachable, self-deprecating sense of humour. But, short in stature or not, she's underweight. I realise that some people are naturally thin, and yes, you are the subject of my extreme envy Smiling, but Victoria Beckham is not naturally *that* thin. I don't think it's possible to be her size and be eating over 1200 calories a day.

Those who admire her seem like media-brainwashed robots. Are we to believe every bag-of-bones celebrity is "naturally thin?" Look at what is in front of you--Ten years ago, Posh was STILL thin--but HEALTHY looking. Does it make any sense that as she approaches middle age, and has given birth three times, her body would just "naturally" be thinner? Wouldn't that be convenient--in an age where thin is the new trend, these celebrities can just allow their "natural" thinness to shine through.

THIS is what sends thousands and thousands of girls into disordered eating. They aren't "naturally" thin, so they stop eating. Or they throw up. Or they pick up any of the other eating disorders so prevalent today. If Posh has to be strict, so must they. A woman eating half of her daily recommended calories is not "self-dedicated." It is self-mutilating.

ITA BellaSugar. I'm vegan and I don't eat corn syrup or partially hydrogenated oils, which I think is strict. But I certainly eat plenty enough food. It really bothers me how people give her so much flack for being thin. She's also relatively short.

I love her, and I'm sick of healthy skinny girls being targeted all the time. She's obviously a healthy weight, its not like you see just skin and bones like some celebrities out there. If she was bigger there would be someone talking about how she needs to lose weight. If she likes who she is, then what's the problem? She looks great, and she managed to bag one of the hottest men out there so she can't be that bad, right?

She's skinnier than I usually like but if that's how she likes herself, I don't see what the problem is as long as she accomplishes it with healthy eating and exercise. I heard people teasing her because she doesn't eat mexican food and cupcakes and stuff - I don't think that's wrong. I wish I had that kind of resolve. For many moderation is a better choice, but if you can stick to healthy, good-quality food all the time, my hat's off to you.
