The world of cycling takes another blow as yet another cyclist — the third this race — has been booted from the Tour de France after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
While doping compromises a sport's validity, a bigger issue is that athletes are willing to risk their own health in hopes of victory. With the Olympics just around the corner, the issue of doping is at the forefront of discussions and at first I want to say, "Why are they so dumb?" but then I am led to my own health blips in life. While I can say that I've never taken steroids, I have put myself on some seriously stupid, and radically unhealthy, diets in hopes of achieving weight loss.
I'm obviously curious about you guys. Have you ever done anything to jeopardize your own health in hopes of achieving something more (weight loss, a trophy, good grades, popularity, etc.)? Speak up and share your thoughts, I know you guys have some great things to add — you always do!

I took diet pills with ephedra. (I am sad to say that they really worked REALLY well, and if they were still legal I would be tempted to take them again since I didn't experience any side effects). I would like to think I am older and wiser now (I took them in college), but I am not sure that is the case.
I also tried the Stewardess Diet (which is only adds up to about 500 calories a day). I lasted 2 days. That was just plain stupid.
1I took Xenadrine with Ephedra back in High School before prom and i drop a lot of weight. Regardless, I wasnt chunky in Highschool I weight 135 but i dropped to 120 in a matter of weeks. But the backfire i gain double and now Im at 165 and I wish i can take some more of those pills and then just watch what i eat.
2Way too many loud concerts, clubs without earplugs. I'd be afraid to take a hearing test - I just don't want to know how much I've lost already.
3Also was on a "juice" kick for a few months about 6 years ago - drank only juiced foods for breakfast and lunch, only ate one solid food meal a day at dinner. Don't know where I got that one from!
I starved myself for the best part of a year in University. Because I'm a bigger girl, everyone complimented me, which is what kept me going with the starvation! (Had I been thin, everyone would've been concerned for me, what's up with THAT?)
4Well I used to smoke. I knew it was bad, I knew it was killing me, and I couldn't stop. All the nagging in the world would not change me. I gave up 5 years ago and I would still have a ciggie today if someone could promise me it would not affect my 4 year old in any way.
5where would you like me to start? fad diets, smoking, binge drinking, purging and thats just to name a few.
i once lost 12 pounds in 5 days in a juice fast. i dehydrated myself, my heart went into overtime, all in all, not good. i've wisend up now, but my body still pays for
some of it.
6I went through a phase in college where I took laxatives every day to help me lose weight. I took 2 doses all at once and pretty soon I think I started to get dependent on them because if I didn't take them, I couldn't "go". I stopped taking them when I heard that they can screw up your electrolyte balances and can seriously wreck your colon over time if you keep taking them. So if you're tempted to take them, don't...it didn't really even help much with weight loss; they just gave me cramps and made me feel awful.
7I used to smoke, but more unhealthy was when I had an eating disorder (anorexia) back in high school. I still have leftover health problems from that one, but at the time I thought that I looked fantastic.
8Massive amounts of caffeine intaken during all nighters to the point where I would get the shakes.
...I still do that.
9i went on a diet for a year... i only ate fruits and veggies. literally, that was all i ate. the only snacks i ate were under 90 calories and i am happy to say that i lost about 20 pounds doing it, however, it is not healthy at all. my protein intake was so low that my hair started falling out. i'm so glad i am so much wiser than before, because i hate to say it, but i was killing myself
10For the longest time would eat basically nothing but fast food. It was really sad and I realized it had to stop. I felt like crap and it was just this cycle of staying in and getting pizza ever night. Of course I wanted to say in because those pizzas were making me fat! I felt ashamed of what I had become. I am dramatic huh?~_^ Really though, I happy that I have changed my eating habits and started living a healthy life style.
11The semester when I ate less than 1000 calories/day and did high intensity cardio for hours- yeah, that was bad. I lost the weight that I wanted to, but I also lost a lot of muscle mass and destroyed my metabolism. It took me a good year to get healthy.
12My list goes on really... eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overexercising- all within 5 constant years), binge drinking (even on school nights!), abusing OTC medicine to get high, and smoking here and there.
I'm clean now and now I don't touch any horrible substances... not even wine! I would love a glass of wine but that addictive personality in me makes it a whole bottle of wine and not just one glass. I've had a rough past but I really enjoy living these days.
13A long time ago a friend gave me a fad diet called the Cleveland Clinic diet. I did it for years during the summer time only. Last summer something went wrong and now I have health issues. I wish I had NEVER gotten my hands on that diet. Also, I use to use tanning beds in the summer and then went to Florida a couple of times and got a couple of sunburns over the summer months in the past. I have alot of moles now and will probably end up with skin cancer.
14Spectra: I hear ya on the laxative thing. I can't stop. Its like an addiction. I like how flat my belly is and how 'empty' I feel after. I know it must be hurting me though. Dehydration bad I would think. Plus bulimia, which also contributes to dehydration
15Yeah, in high school I crash dieted on a 300 calorie a day liquid diet, only I ever had time for one drink a day, so uh.. 100 calories a day.
Did it a few days until one day while practising on the marching field (I played quadtoms in the highschool band) I passed out cold.....I woke up with my band director's face, and about 10 of my friends, staring down at me.
On retrospect I do not know how I thought I could go around at 16 on 100 calories a day, marching in Texas summer heat.
What was that damn thing called..oh yeah, the Cambridge diet.
16anorexia, bulimia, cigarettes, and laxatives for this girl.
17i took this stuff called clenbuterol in the pil form and almost took in the liquid form too. it is like a horse medicine and acts like a steroid and you are suposed to lose a lot of weight on it. you are supposed to take it in cycles like steroids but i am really bad at incorporating new habits so i always forgot to take the pills and just stopped taking it. apparently its really bad for you so i guess its good i stopped!
18Ciggies and laxatives here.
19I was anorexic for little period and I find myself easily falling back into that cycle when I'm trying to be 'healthy'. I'm really good at monitoring it though.
