My mom recently revealed to me that she takes medication for osteoporosis, and not only did it spook me a bit, it also made me think about my own bone health. Am I getting enough calcium? Am I doing enough to keep my bones strong as I age? Am I at risk for osteoporosis? Take this little quiz to see how much you know.

Pretty pathetic that I only got 1/5, especially since I'm only 26 and already in the early stages of Osteoporosis (called Ostopenia). I've been taking supplements for years, and I lift weights twice a week.
1wow, totally blew that one....
2Well I kinda have to dispute two of these..
1: The "best" source of non-supplement calcium IS dairy foods. If by best, you mean the most calcium per serving, then you are talking yoghurt, skim milk, whole milk...only spinach comes close to those 3 sources, so kinda sucks that "true" was seen as wrong.
2: At or around age 40, I have read more than once that it is recommended that WOMEN get 1200-1400g or more calcium per day...since your question did not specify women or men, its a bit misleading because to me 1000mg in that age range is a bit inaccurate based on research I have read.
Sorry to be a hardass but...really these two were a bit inaccurate.
3Actually, "Rabidmoon," dairies are know to leach calcium and other minerals from the bones to neutralize the acidity caused by overdoses of protein (supplied by dairy and meats). When these minerals are removed from the bones they are urinated out. So in all actual truth? Dairy has a negative effect on our calcium levels and bone health. Which, by the way, are both mutually exclusive - As calcium is not the cause of osteoporosis.
Further evidence of this fact is supported by the rates of osteoporosis being strongest in countries with high national consumption of dairy; Including the US, Finland and Sweden. Equally, the rates are lowest in countries were dairy consumption is very low; Primarily Asian and South African cultures.
The primary cause of osteoporosis is a high-protein diet. If you wish to avoid bone-related health issues discontinue your use of dairy and meat and instead rely on a diet of fruits and dark green leafy vegetables.
4Very true Finn. I def know about that but I have a very very serious weakness fo dairy in general. Its like my candy! Hehe. I do ty to offset it with plenty of veggies but I have to be careful b/c calcium oxalate kidneystones run in my family. Was that enough contradictions?! Its like I cant win!
5I used to be the same way with dairy, even after I gave up meats and all other processed foods I still craved the milk stuffs
I did decide to give it up though, but did it veerrrrry slowly. Like
3-4 oz a day to 2.5-3 oz two months later, then down to 2 oz and then 1.5... 1... And then down to 6 days a week, 5 days... Ect.
Looong process, but worth it! I definitely saw a difference in my skin, it was mostly clear before but I had a load of blackheads that disappeared when the cheese did.
