I recently got a question from one reader that I thought you guys would have some great suggestions for. Here's her question:
"Hey Fit. I've been trying to run outside a lot more these days but I never know what to do with my car keys (I drive to the park where I run). I don't feel comfortable leaving my door unlocked while I'm gone but holding the keys gets annoying. Any ideas would be much appreciated."
I use a small running wallet that attaches to my sneakers — it's inexpensive and doesn't bother me on my jogs. However, I am sure you guys have your own innovative ideas for stashing keys and IDs while running so help a user out and share them below.

Most running shorts like the simple Nike $28 ones that come in a million different colors have a little pocket that's sewn into the liner just under the waist band that is big enough for a car key (and/or one of those tiny Tampax tampons that's compact), so that's what I do . . the little wallet sounds cool too.
1In college, I would tie my house key onto my shoelaces, and then double-knot my laces to prevent it from falling off.
2I just tie mine into my laces, too.
3Ha, this reminds me of that car commercial where the guys steals the car, drives around and then puts it back!!!
Unfortunately, I don't have very good suggestions. When we ran outside, my husband either put the lone key in his sock OR he had girdle shorts from football that had pockets for pads. Maybe there are running shorts with pockets somewhere (tight, nothing that's loose where it would bang around)?
Sorry not much help.
4Ok, when I started typing that comment, there weren't any others. I'm glad someone knew of the right kind of shorts!
5I have a small wrist wallet.
6I run a lot outside and the only thing that works for me is sticking the key under my laces on the top of my shoe. If you work it in under the criss-crossing it's totally secure and I've never had it fall out. The only problem is you have to take the key off of your key ring, but you'd have to do that anyway, so I highly recommend it if you don't want to buy special shorts with pockets!
7I don't run much right now, but walk a TON since I'm in training for the Breast Cancer 3-Day. I wear Fit Flops, so no laces. Most of my gear doesn't have pockets. What I do for my house key on a short walk that doesn't require the fanny pack (so 9 and under), is I take only the necessary key(s) and use the loop to attach it to the left shoulder of my top. Most of the tops I wear are sport tanks with thin straps that are just wide enough for the key.
8I always carry a bottle with me when I run outdoors. Ultimate Directions has bottle holder that comes with a zip pocket. I just put the key in there.
9Either tie it to my shoes or safety pin in to my shorts, or you can buy shorts that have a little key pouch in the waist band.
10It's not sexy, but I run with a fanny pack! I can carry my keys, phone (in case of emergency), ID, and Epi Pen (I'm allergic to bees, so have to be careful outside). It works great, and even with all that stuff, I don't notice it while I run. If anything I just figure the extra stuff means I'm burning a few extra calories.
11This is probably extremely unhelpful - but I go to the gym in my condo's community, and to make it even better, I installed an electronic lock on my front door (keypad access). All I bring is a towel and a bottle of water!
12I don't know if this would be helpful in case of car keys, but when my boyfriend and I go power walking I stick his house key in my (don't laugh) bra. Its a sports bra, so its nice and secure, and even when I walk really fast, the key doesn't move at all. I might try the sneaker thing, though...
13my shorts from old navy have one of those little pockets on the inside. cheap too
14Lululemon has a great little wristband I use:
http://lululemon.com/products/accessories/wear/key_cuff
A lot of their pants and skirts also have card-size pockets that are perfect for the little things you need when you're out running.
15On my longer runs, I put my keys in my running pack. While they bounce around, at least they are secure. If I am going on a shorter run, I either tie my key onto the drawstring of my shorts, or stick them in the pocket of my running shorts. Good Luck!
16I use either a running wallet that clips onto my sneakers, or use a lanyard that I loop around my wrist (the bouncing around on my boobs really bugs me). I've also tied it to my laces, but the running wallet is by far the easiest and most convenient, and mine was less than $10.
17my friend had some elastic thing that she clips her key onto and ties it into her sneakers. but i either hold mine, or put it in the little inside shorts pocket. i have a few long sleeve shirts that have a little pocket on the arm for a key as well.
18Yeah I put mine in my bra too! I do this for car keys as well. I have a small clicker to unlock the door and then two small keys. It's actually pretty comfortable and as long as the bra fits they won't move around or fall out. I knew one of my sports bras was getting too stretched out when my keys started to fall out the bottom when I ran!
19Also, a lot of underarmour shorts have zip pockets on the butt that fit a key and a card or two if you're going for a long run.
20there are little magnetic key-holder boxes (hide-a-key) that stick to the bottom of cars so you can lock your car and leave the key hidden underneath. they sell them at auto parts stores.
21I used to tie my key to my shoes or my drawstring, but now I put everything in with my ipod in its armband case - there's not a specific space for extra junk, but there's definitely enough room behind it to squeeze in a key and my ID. I'm going to check out some other solutions - the Nike wallet looks like a great idea!
22If you find an answer let me know. The holder on my shoes wouldn't work for me. I need something that holds my keys and bus pass. I was thinking one of those water running belts but it looks clunky.
Maybe I'll hold my keys in my teeth, I've already tried putting them in my bra or safety pinning them to my pants. Neither was comfortable or very safe.
23Lululemon has has tops/pants with key pockets/i-pod pockets I usually tuck my ipod and keys in those pockets.
24one heads-up about putting the keys below your shoelaces - my dad got a pretty nasty bruise on the bones of his foot from this - the impact of running plus having something tightly pressed against the top of the foot led to a hairline fracture. i usually tie mine to the string of my running pants and then tuck the keys in the waistband, since it's pretty tight
25nike shorts with the inside pocket or i just tie the key to my shoe.
26I have one of those magnetic key boxes but I'm too scared to use it! I did try out the number lock for my car the other day for the first time. I can see myself using it more often in the future. But until then I'll keep on running with either my shoe wallet or arm wallet from Nike (both under $10 each), or the running pack I got for my marathon training last year at a push. I don't like to hide keys in my shorts or bra since I've lost them that way before.
27A tip if you use the Nike plus is to not tie the key into the same lace as the show you have your sensor in as it can throw it off.
Most of my shorts either have outside pockets or an inside one, so I typically put my car key there. I also use a safety pin when I don't have a pocket.
28Tying into shoelaces has always worked for me...another option is to hide the key up under the car...there's a lip around the wheel...hopefully no burglars are watching when you place it!
29I have a metal plate in my head, so I just put my key into one of those magnetic boxes and slap it on to my forehead.
Years back, I found a little soft "pocket" at a running store. It was big enough for an ID, credit card, key, and a small amount of cash. I would just fold
the metal clip closed on the waistband of my shorts. Worked like a charm!
30Well i run from my house, but if I did have to hold my keys, I think i would just take the 1 car key off of my keyring, and then put it in my pocket
31I don't know how much my opinion will matter, but I really don't recommend that magnetic box under the car. You DO NOT know who will see you place it there. Even if the burglar didn't see you do it, he/she might run their hands under the car 'just in case'.
32I loop mine through a hair band and then loop the band over my functional ponytail band. I never worry about them!
33i use the running wallet and stuff my car key in there - but i sometimes lose track of where i've left the running wallet -and end up having to run with my key and ipod in hand... not fun..
34but i'm really liking the idea of tying it through your laces...i'm definitely trying that next time
I'm with Lynne on the magnetic box. My best friend in college had an older brother that would always use one on his car to hold a spare key. (He was always locking his keys in his car.) Unfortunately, for him, he drove a very distinctive collector's Ford Mustang. It usually took us a matter of minutes to find that magnetic box...and move/park his car to one of the many other campus parking lots!
35I usually stuff my house key in my ipod holder. It's really secure and I never have to worry about it falling out.
36I put then in my bra.
37I put them in my sports bra, too for short runs, I try to wear shorts/pants with a pocket for very long runs in case of chafing. Mostly I haven't had a problem though. The shoelace thing annoys me for some reason, the motion of it.
38I have been wanting answers to this for a while now. I just started running outdoors again after spending 2 years in the gym. Before when I ran I was living at my parents house and they have a keypad entry on their garage. So it was pretty simple! But now living in an apartment the only time I don't carry a key is when my husband is home and can let me in when I get back. When he isn't home I have just been carrying my key in my hand. Not so fun. The only suggestion that I feel somewhat safe with here is the hairband idea and the pockets. I am way too cheap to go buy all new running gear so I will be trying the hairband idea on my next run.
39I have the Nike shorts with the little liner pocket in them for my keys. If I'm not wearing them, I have a bungee-cord type keychain that goes around my wrist and I put them on that.
40I bought some inexpensive C9 running shorts at Target last year that have 2 side zip pockets - great for keys, $, gels, etc. They have compression shorts underneath. They are great for long runs. I love them so much I bought them in three colors.
I also saw a hide-a-key scrunchie at Ulta about a month ago - no, really. It could be worn around the wrist if that is not your go-to hairstyle.
41i don't know how popular these are, but i wear basic cotton SOFFEE shorts, and i roll the waistband up twice and keep my key in the part i roll up of my waistband. it always stays put and i can never even feel it.
42I stuff them into my ipod armband...
43I bought a SPIbelt at a race that I ran that is perfect to put my keys and anything else I need to bring. It's kinda like a fanny-pack but much smaller and made from a spandex material so it stretches as you need it. I like to put my key and ipod in there because I hate wearing my ipod on my arm.
You can get them at spibelt.com
44I use one of those springy plastic bracelet key holders, attach my key, and wear it on my wrist! Just got back from a run with it too.
45I used to have a car key that would fit in my iPod's arm band (it had a spot for a key) and that was pretty helpful. Before I had that arm band, I would tie my shoe with it on the laces and then tuck it under the cross laces. A couple of times I tried attaching this key to my dog's leash but it would bounce around and I didn't want it to bother her.
Then I got a Jetta and the key is pretty large so I would either put it in my back pocket (Nike shorts with zipper on back pocket) if there was one or tie it to my drawstring and put it in the small inside pocket. Storing the Jetta key is kind of a pain so I try to take my fiancee's Explorer, and it has the keypad on the door so I just leave the key inside the car. This makes things a whole lot easier.
46Lululemon! All their run gear, bras, hats and pants have pockets for your keys!
4790% of these ideas are no good for me, I have one of those big honkin switchblade keys (http://www.fourtitude.com/news/uploads/Audi_News/057__scaled_600_004.jpg) that doesn't nicely anywhere!! Anyone else with the same prob?
48I take a quite a bit of stuff with me when I run. Usually this is because I am scared to be without all of it - kind of like my security blanket when I'm out of the house. I use a running jacket from Nike that has two pockets on each side and one in the back. I can fit my cell phone, ipod, bus pass with $20, a cliff bar, keys and chapstick. Its not so bad if I'm wearing it, but when I tie it around my waist it can get kind of annoying becasue it keeps bumping into me due the the weight in the pockets. I always have to fold the pockets up and tuck them under where it is tied around my waist to keep it secure. Now that I read this I realize how crazy I sound for bringing so much with me... Oh well!
49Miss Meow, I was checking to see if anyone else usues their bra, and me and you are it, I guess! Lol!!
Fuzzles, you crack me up!...
