The cereal aisle at any grocery store is usually pretty intimidating. There are literally hundreds of choices and many of them have health claims right on the front of the box, but do you know how to pick a healthy cereal? Fitness magazine consulted Jackie Newgent, R.D., a culinary nutritionist in New York, to find out what to look for when picking out the right cereal. Here are highlights:
- Three or more grams of total fiber per serving.
- One or more grams of soluble fiber, which may help lower cholesterol and keeps blood sugar stable. (Whole-oat cereals are especially good sources.)
- Fewer than two grams of saturated fat and no trans fats, both of which contribute to heart disease risk.
- Fewer than 10 grams of sugar, unless it has dried fruit, which contain natural sugars.
Does your favorite cereal meet these requirements?

Rocket Dog
Mine does, but the dried fruit really ups the sugar!
1I'm an addict to healthy ceral haha. Unfourtunatly, I can't eat it right now because of my cleanse!!!
2I'm a dried fruit person myself, specifically berries, even though I usually add more berries anyway.
3I eat Kashi GoLean. My favorite of all time is Total but Kashi fills me up longer, probably due to all the protein! I have yet to find another cereal in the same calorie range with that much protein.
4my husband eats lucky charms w/skim milk every day for breakfast
I figure at least
it's fortified, and it's got to be better than bacon/eggs/biscuits
5I eat Kashi Go Lean Crunch. I ate Go Lean for a couple of years, then switched to the Crunch. Both are delicious. Kashi Go Lean Crunch with nectarines and blueberries in the summertime is something I look forward to all year long!
6I also swear by Kashi Go Lean Crunch. It seriously keeps me full for about an hour or two longer than any other cereal I've eaten. I also really like anything Special K makes, but it doesn't have much (if any) fibre. I also have this amazing pomegranate granola, but again, it doesn't have any fibre.
7I love Fiber One... it looks like rabbit food (it might taste like it too, but either it's just that good or I've been brainwashed by my trainer
) It's got zero sugar, 14 grams of fiber and 60 calories per half cup. I eat it with yogurt
and cinnamon and fruit and have a yummy yummy breakfast!
It also comes with these excellent recipes on the back like Onion rings that are baked and use Fiber One as the breading so they're suuuuper good for you! yummy!
8I actually love Fiber One as well! It's a colon blow in a bowl!
9Well, my FAVORITE cereal is Golden Grahams and I don't think it meets those requirements, but the cereal I usually eat (bran flakes or Fiber One flakes) does.
10Kashi Vive!
11Fiber One Honey Clusters is my fave. I also like Puffins Cinnamon. Yum!
12I love Puffins, any flavor really. I have also started eating Kashi Vive and that's really yummy and fun to eat!
13Too be Honest I eat any cereal! LOL bad or good. I love it!
