A lot of us take our dinner right in front of the TV. Seems relaxing enough, but if your aim is weight loss then you may want to think about moving away from the TV.
New research has found that kids who watched TV while eating lunch ate a whopping 228 extra calories than those who ate without the television on. While the study was done only with kids, I am a firm believer that this also holds true for adults. I'm a fan of TV just as much as the next girl, but it can be a mindless activity, which leads to mindless eating and unnecessary calories. So do yourself and your kids a favor and turn off the tube. Maybe you're already eating without the TV on, so I'm curious . . .

always..
always. can't help it. i live alone
almost always. but as long as you have food portioned out before you sit down to eat it shouldn't matter.
If anything, I tend to eat more if I'm not watching TV b/c I get bored and I only got the food there. Though usually I decide ahead of time how much to eat and stick to that b/c I never feel full until like an hour later anyway.
I often do, but I always measure out/determine what I'm going to eat BEFORE I turn on the TV, and I don't eat any more than that.
I always eat in front of the TV, but I am always eating a portioned meal made from a healthy recipe. I don't think there is anything wrong with eating in front of the television as long as you know in advance how much you're going to eat.
Yes, we always do. But i don't eat any more than i would if i sat in the dining room to eat.
My bf & I used to get into arguments, because I would spend the time making dinner, and he would try & take his plate and sit down at the tv!!! I was so mad! In my opinion, I've prepared this MEAL, not just food to eat, but a meal to sit down and enjoy. Besides, you can see the tv from the table ANYWAY! But I only have the volume up if it's a sporting event he wants to see. I just was raised with turning the tv off for meals (ESPECIALLY DINNER), and I want to make sure I continue that habit when I have kids!
i eat more if i don't watch tv. i find it helpful to eat outside the kitchen actually /c i take all the food i want, cook it up and plate it, and then i'm done in the kitchen, which means no grabbing handfuls of junk that i don't really want on my way out.
We always eat at the TV. My boyfriend made our cofffe table and it pops up o you have a higher table. We make our meal then bring it over so it's not like we eat any more or less than we would've elsewhere, I eat what I put on my plate.
We always do it- like several other girls have said if you bring the food to already plated why would you eat more than you would at a table? Plus I just do not understand why it's so hard for people to follow portion control and self-constraint with food? A normal meal for me, dinner table, restaurant, sofa, patio- it's all the same meal why wouldn't I be able to control what I'm eating? Don't bring your bag of doritos and munch away- isn't that common sense? Don't eat doritos anyways they are so horrible for u
My husband and I often eat dinner in the living room with the TV, but again, we portion our food and eat only that. We usually have to eat pretty late, like 8:00, and only get to eat dinner together about 2 or 3 times a week (due to our jobs), so we like to make dinner and enjoy it with a movie.
I sometimes do. It's only my boyfriend and me living together, so if he's not around or if a gooooood show is on, we'll park it in front of the TV.
I put always. The only way I can NOT eat in front of the TV would be to go into the bathroom, bedroom or closet...gotta love 1 bedroom apartments!
We purchased a TV for the kitchen because I like background noise while I'm cooking and baking. We eat dinner at the kitchen table, but that's usually still on.
I do a lot ..I can't watch tv w/o some food around or at least a diet pepsi ..ugh !
I do, but it doesn't affect how much I eat at all. If I'm going to snack / graze, I'll eat just as many chips / cookies regardless of the fact that there's a tv present! Haha, no good at all.
Not ALL the time, but definitely most of the time
my husband and I always eat in front of the TV - per his request... we don't have kids so I gave in, but with the deal that when we did have kids we'd all eat at the table w/the TV off. figured it was fair enough
My biggest problem is actually eating infront of the computer since I work from home on some days.
Sometimes, but it's a specific portion, not something like a bag of cookies or chips.
I very much dislike the fact that we eat in front of the tv. doesn't help that we don't have a dinning room table or even a breakfast table so we're forced to eat dinner at the coffee table in front of the tv.
I think meal time at a table is a wonderful opportunity for bonding and communication (development).
of course we're getting a new couch before we get a table ):
I love to watch sitcoms while I eat.
we don't even have a t.v. in the living room. and the t.v.'s we have we can only watch dvd or vhs movies on them. one is in the kids room and one is in our bedroom. so no we don't. but hubby and i sit in the living room and eat, we talk alot while eating.
Sometimes. My parents always travel for work so when I'm alone at home, I sit in front of the telly and eat. I don't really think that I eat more when I'm in front of the telly. I guess I snack more if I stay all day watching TV (which never happens because I hate TV). But then again, I always snack on fruits and yogurt.
We never eat dinner in front of the TV - that's family time - but AFTER, or just before dinner, is another matter. Shamefully, I'm a sucker for those massive packs of greasy Walkers Sensations while watching Heroes or Gossip Girl. I can easily polish one off during a single sitting.
Sometimes I do, but only when im eating by my self
I eat at the kitchen table, but the TV is on. :/ I would rather have it off, but the parents like to wind down by watching it.
Always!
the quick is NOT the fill your plate in the first place.

I always eat in front of the TV after a long day I find it relaxing. I do always try to eat slow and consciously and I always put my fork down afer every bite. Though I must admit that if I eat with the TV off or at the dining room table I eat way less.
I eat at the table, but I leave the TV on so I can see it/hear it while I'm eating. I don't eat mindlessly; I just like to watch the TV while I eat.
I love eating in front of the TV. I look forward to it when I'm eating alone- to watch one of my favorite shows, make a specific meal, etc. I agree with what everyone's been saying that there's no harm if you portion your food beforehand. I've definitely made the mistake of eating chips straight out of the bag, and it's amazing how much you end up eating.
My boyfriend and I eat in front of the t.v. sometimes. When we do eat in front of the t.v., we get a portioned meal, and we don't eat anything more than what we have on our plate.
em113, best icon ever
I try to avoid it by eating early. Early dinners are healthy as it is. But there are times when I just have to deviate from this habit.
I've gotta admit, it's a bad habit of mine.
Yeah sometimes. This is the reason I m having extra calories. I need to loss some weight. Please help............................
i do sometimes - but that's because my fiance and i don't have a dining room table in our apartment so we have to eat at the coffee table. i think that we eat pretty much the same that we would if we had a real table though - since we portion our food like it were normal and we don't have 'snacks' at the table.
i don't get it? are we animals? i cook without watching tv and that's when i decide how big my portion is going to be... so when i sit down in front of my screen i eat only that portion. where are those extra calories gonna come from? control yourself before it's too late. don't put extra stuff on your plate and make just enough for one portion.
Rarely, I try hard not to
I always eat in front of the tv. But like many people above have said, I fix my plate and then go sit down. I think that eating too much in front of the tv pertains to people who sit down with a bag of chips or something.
Never, never, never. My husband was used to doing it, but growing up I was never allowed to do it, and I learned to enjoy that time to sit, eat, relax, and have good conversation. Don't do it!
Yes, I always eat dinner in front of the TV, but I never eat snack food or treat food with the TV on.
I think eating dinner in front of the TV is actually quite healthy (at least the way we do it). Getting caught up in a good show during dinner means that we eat our food more slowly to pay attention to the program. The fact that we're paying attention to the TV instead of the food means we would eat anything on our plate, including bland food and bitter or boring vegetables, so we don't bother with adding salt, sugar, butter, oil, or whatever other unhealthy taste enhancers people use. We also each have a single plate with us in front of the TV, so we can't get seconds without getting up and going to the kitchen.
Also, we have a TiVo, which means that we can easily fast-forward through commercials. Not having commercial breaks means that we don't have the chance to go to the kitchen and get more food until the program is over (usually 40 minutes). That's enough time for the body to signal that it's satisfied.
For people concerned about discussion, having a Tivo also means that we can pause and discuss the shows whenever a scene triggers interesting comments. Our household has many thought-provoking, interactive discussions over TV. For example, we often pause Mythbusters to discuss how they could've made their experiments better. In more standard shows, we pause to discuss how the characters can solve or avoid the issues that they run into. We discuss what the show says about the views and opinions of the writers, whether we agree with those views or not, and how realistic we think various psychological reactions are. We speculate about which parts of the news are solid facts and which parts are just opinions or "human interest" remarks designed to make the facts more interesting to people.
