Although there is a serious ban on fireworks in northern California this year due to all the fires, I know folks all over the country will be creating personal, home grown pyrotechnic displays. I would like to remind you to play it safe. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has cooked up a few tips for you and here are highlights:
- Purchase fireworks from a licensed and reputable vendor.
- Never give fireworks to children.
- Read directions and inspect fireworks for defects.
- Keep a bucket of water, garden hose or portable fire extinguisher close by.
- Ignite fireworks outdoors, away from buildings or any combustible material.
- Never attempt to fix or re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.
- Ignite only one firework at a time.
- Make sure no smoldering fires or sparks from falling firework debris remain before going in for the night.

I have never lit fireworks. Not even sparklers. I think I am going my usual route and enjoying a show set by someone other than me. Woohoo, Rockies and Marlins at Coors Field.
1Ha, Fit, I can tell you're in California by how you suggest to light off fireworks. Around here, just about every other person lights off illegal fireworks in their backyard using their cigarette butts. Last night someone set off some serious firecrackers in the parking lot by my house...it was kind of annoying actually.
What really scares me is seeing people giving sparklers or fireworks to really little kids (like age 2 or 3). Those things are super dangerous and you have to really be careful with them. I wish the cops would crack down on illegal fireworks around here, but they just ignore it. Probably because they'd be overwhelmed with the amount of tickets they'd be writing.
2It's illegal to set most fireworks off in Ohio unless you have a permit. They don't issue those for backyards. Sparklers and snaps are okay, though.
3fireworks kinda freak me out
