Eating in front of the TV has never been a good idea; people tend to overeat since they are not paying attention to the simple act of eating. Distracted by the on-screen drama, they just keep putting food in their mouths. Mindless eating generally means eating more. New research out of the US and Europe indicates that morbid images from TV shows may add to this problem since they inspire overeating as well. Images and ideas from grisly crime shows evoke death-related thoughts, which inspire a heightened sense of awareness and mortality. To diminish uncomfortable thoughts about the end of life and our place in the universe, people tend to eat. And they don't just eat, they overeat to escape.
Next time you're watching CSI, keep the chips in the kitchen at an out-of-comfort range.

i try not to mindlessly eat. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
1I read about this on another blog. It kind of makes sense, I guess. This is why I never eat when I watch TV. Plus, because my hubby is the biggest wimp ever when it comes to watching graphic shows, so we don't really watch CSI at our house anyway.
2I watch a lot of crime shows including CSI and it's never made me want to eat. If anything it grosses me out enough to NOT want to eat.
3I'll admit, i eat a lot in front of the TV at my house since I usually don't have anyone to eat with. But if you prepare food before you bring it into the TV room and only bring in proper serving sizes then overeating is nearly impossible! Plus I'm a pretty slow eater so I'm generally pretty aware of how much I'm consuming anyway.
4I only watch tv shows that lifts my spirits. That leaves news,CSI and such out of the list.

6Yeah, crime shows don't exactly increase my appetite. Neither do medical shows. I could see this if it were sitcoms or something, but looking at blood and gruesome images just doesn't do it for me, I guess.
7im sitting on my bed with my laptop on my lap, a bowl of ice cream in my hand, and CSI: Miami on TV ... and i come across this post immediately. how ironic!
8I eat almost every night in front of the TV because by the time I get home from work and exercise it's so late I have to combine my tv watching and eating or I'll never get to bed . . .but like Cebca said if you bring the properly proportioned meal you won't over it- yes I agree taking a bag of chips might be bad . . also I eat slower cause I'm watching/distracted and sometimes leave a bit behind and it gets too cold/undesirable . . .plus eating and watching autopsies- NO WAY that would make me want more food- plus CSI isn't that tramatizing because many of the situations are so ridiculous
9funny, all i ever watch is csi. for hours and hours.
