I'm always looking for hidden trans fat in my foods and since labels can be so deceiving it's important to read the ingredients list. To make life a little bit easier on everyone who is looking to eliminate trans fat from their diets, Prevention has found the top 10 highest trans fat foods that you may want to reconsider before digging in. They are:
- Cake mixes
- Cereal and energy bars
- Chips and crackers
- Dried soups
- Fast food
- Frozen entrées
- Margarine
- Nondairy creamers and whipped topping
- Packaged cookies and candy
- Packaged doughnuts, pies, and cakes
I know that there are a lot of goodies are on that list, but the good news is that many companies are ditching the trans fat these days. Be sure to check for partially-hydrogenated oil (or a variation of it) in the ingredients before swearing off your favorite energy bar.

Oh how depressing. Cereal, cookies, candy, crackers... some of my favorite foods.
Ok, I knew about cookies, candy, etc. having trans-fat but cereal and energy bars surprised me a lot.
1hey fit, can you clarify: what's the difference between hydrogenated oil and partially hydrogenated oil? i assumed both were evil/trans fat, but i'm confused now. thank you!
2I hadn't even thought about cake mixes - here I was thinking I was a good girl for using olive oil with them.
3I like to eat a small bowl of cake batter for dessert sometimes. LOL About once a month.
4Thanks for posting this. I usually try to avoid packaged foods, but I do use non-dairy creamer in my coffee and it never even occurred to me to check if it had trans fat in it. Yep, I just checked mine and it does. Yikes!
5I used to be like, addicted to Cool Whip because I thought it wasn't too high in calories, so I'd dollop it on fruit, yogurt, ice cream...heck, I'd eat spoons of it plain. Then I found out that it was full of transfats and I just cut it out cold turkey. Now, any time I want whipped cream, I buy RediWhip Light because it's made with cream AND it actually tastes better.
6WAIT all cereals? What about so called healthy ones like All Bran or Grape Nuts etc? Bah!
7omg... i had NO clue about most of these. thanks for the heads up.
8FITSUGAR,
can you please clarify whether you meant
CEREAL & ENERGY BARS
OR CEREAL BARS AND ENERGY BARS
There's an important difference, and we don't want readers to be getting the wrong impression and skipping out on breakfast altogether now.
9Man, cereal
I love my plain ole cheerios!
10look what i found! this is the coolest little book, it tells you actual name brands that have trans fat and not just items. www. safebrands.org It has a color for corn syrup too....i'm getting one for my husband to keep in his bag, now he won't have any good reason to be eating trans fat!
