Thanks to a series of fires up here in Northern California, many regular outdoor exercisers are being forced to take their workouts inside due to excess smoke in the air. It's especially important for those of us with asthma or upper-respiratory maladies, but everyone should use a little bit more caution when the air quality is not up to par this Summer. Use these tips for exercising to prevent damage to your health:
- Do not run on or near roads where there is heavy truck or bus traffic.
- Work out in the early morning or later in the evening when the ozone levels are at their lowest.
- Exercise indoors if possible.
- If you experience any difficulty breathing, stop your exercise immediately and see your doctor.

I live in Sacramento and the air here is DISGUSTING. Just walking to/from work makes my lungs hurt.
I saw two joggers out this morning and thought how can they do that? I mean it has got to be horrible for your lungs!
1Meant to add - the air is full of smoke from the fires, its been super hazy the last 3 days.
2i work in San Bruno, just south of SF... it smells like smoke even INSIDE the office. blegh.
3I live in Cotati, about an hour north of SF and the air quality is very bad here too.
4I was in the Bay Area for a long weekend recently and hoping to take advantage of the sea-level for some long runs but couldn't handle the smoke. Blech. My running shoes didn't leave my suitcase.
5I live in Sacramento as well, and I've been going jogging at 6.30AM when it's a little better. I'm thinking about shelving my running until the smoke dissipates a little. I've noticed I've started coughing a bit and my poor dog has been coughing too. So he's banned to the house.
6this is impossible to avoid...
