When temperatures rise, folks start sporting their favorite flip-flops. Once relegated to the role of beachwear or a shower shoe, flip-flops have become a fashion mainstay – a fact that might give Anna Wintour hives. In fact, the simple shoe gives physiologists and podiatrists more than just hives. The thong sandal has become fodder for research.

Two biomechanists from Auburn University studied the effects wearing thongs has on how people walk. They noticed two important changes: the first being a shortened stride length. Taking shorter steps translates into more wear and tear on the legs joints over time, since it takes more steps to reach any destination. Secondly, the researchers also noticed that flip-flop wearers chronically scrunch their toes to keep the thongs on their feet. This constant toe contraction turns off the ability of the toes to lift, which they should do with each step. The end effect is the "flip-flop shuffle," which is not a very efficient way to get around.
Thongs, like everything else in life, are fine in moderation and are great for walking across hot sand at the beach or showering at the gym. They just shouldn't be your main summer shoes. How often do you wear flip-flops? Tell me in the comments section below.

Well since I live in Florida I think the rules might be different than in other parts of the country. Even in the winter, it's common to see people wearing a jacket/sweater, long sleeves, jeans, and flip flops. I don't necessarily wear them every day, but yes flip flops are a year-round staple for me.
1ugh, I never wear them. I think they are tacky and I can't stand the sound that people make when walking in them.
2I like them. They give me that real summer feeling! But I only wear them when I'm going to do something that doesn't require much walking, because I get blisters easily.
3I wear them too often. I absolutely HATE socks, so I will wear flip flops a lot to avoid having to wear socks.
4I think they're only acceptable fot the beach. I won't wear flip flops on a regular basis. I think they ruin outfits when I could be wearing flats or proper sandals instead.
5I wear flip flops probably 10 months out of the year. I hate flats with a passion, I think they are unflatterng and make people look ridiculous, so it's generally flip flops or heels for me. I'm young enough that it's still appropriate for flip flops to be a wardrobe staple, -(who wears heels to frat parties?) I don't understand people who won't wear flip flops in warm weather. People that wear heels/platforms to the beach, or with short shorts look cheap.
6Eeek...as often as possible, 12 months out of the year!
7I never wear them. It drives me nuts how the first day of nice weather here (which is about in april at 60 degrees) all the teens are out wearing the dumb things.
I especially can't stand seeing recent college grads wearing them to the office with their suit.
If its really hot I wear a pair of wedge sandals that make walking easy.
8I wear 'sandals' perse', just not flip-flops. I could never get past that uncomfortable feeling between my first and second toe!!
9I do wear the 'sport' style sandals. They have the strap over the forefoot, over the ankle and the strap behing the heel.
I could wear those 365 days of year of the weather permitted!!! They are just as comfortable, if not more comfortable than my running shoes!
I dont wear them often.
10I hate flip flops. They're completely trashy and tacky, and I hate the sound they make when people walk. I hate when people drag their feet along in general. Stop being lazy and pick up your feet.
11I wear them daily. I live in the desert, grew up by the beach. While yes, they don't go with every outfit, they go with most of mine. I work from home, so don't get dressed up very often.
12As for toe scrunching and short strides, I guess I don't fit this. I heard this a few days ago and while I'm not sure about the short strides, I definitely don't scrunch up my toes. Maybe it has to do with fit. But I love my flip flops, they're always the most comfortable and easy. No one will ever convince me that they're Tacky or ruin my outfit or whatever. I guess I just have a more ladi back style.
I should mention I'm only speaking for myself. I don't like them for myself therefore I won't wear them. I don't care if other people wear them since it's not like I'm a shoe tyrant who walks around telling people what they should or shouldn't wear. I love flats and prefer them. I would not feel happy being in flip flops a lot of the time and life's too short to walk around in shoes I don't like when there are shoes I do like around.
13Only when I'm back in the States, where it seems acceptable everywhere. And the beach, if I'm on the sand. But never anywhere else.
14I wear them year-round, although that might change since I'm moving back North in about a week. They're so much more comfortable than most other summer sandals, and flats make me look short & stumpy.
15Year round staple for me. I live in deep south Texas where we pretty much have a year round summer, and I want to be comfortable. And BTW, it's possible to walk with a normal gait when wearing flip flops (or chanclas, as we call them here).
16Greentea - I couldn't agree with you more!! Please pick up your feet while wearing flip flops. That drives me insane.
17I wear them all spring/summer/fall when I'm not at work.
I've been guilty of scrunching my toes my whole life, so wearing flip-flops won't really matter, I guess.
There are some very dressy flip-flops out there. They're not all "trashy" or "tacky".
18I have cankles - flats make them worse. I only wear flip flops for casual - not for walking any length of time. I do wear the FitFlops for longer journeys. While I don't think they give my legs a "work out" as advertised, they certainly do make my feet/legs feel less fatigued and my back ache less then a regular pair o'flip flops.
19Not as often as most people. I love my ballerina flats! But I put the arch support thingies in my flip flops. And I try to get the flip flops that fit tighter on my foot instead of the rubber ones that are like one size fits all.
20I wear them sometimes. I used to wear them more when I was younger. And I only wear them when not a lot of walking is required and never at work.
21While I don't hate flipflops, I certainly agree with greentea and wish people would pick up their feet. It's not that hard.
As far as flipflops, I hate the thong ones. They always rub my feet the wrong way, and they are just plain awful. I have a pair that I got back in high school, they are built up in the right places for support, cross at the toe to keep it on my foot, and have a slit between the big toe and the rest of the toes for what I assume is improved foot-placement or something. They're the only flipflops I own, and I went back and bought a second pair after realizing they were the best ever. Too bad they don't make them anymore.
I need to paint my toenails...
22Every once and a while and for going to get a pedicure. I only wear fit flops or a few years ago I had some made by Speedo that were very good. I can't wear the havaianas or any flat or plastic strapped ones. I have high arches and need support and plastic strapped ones give me blisters. I haven't had this problem as much with the fit flops, but with flatter ones, when walking around the city your feet get black and that's so not cute.
23Often! But I try to rotate in wedges and flats.
24I love flipflops. I don't wear the cheapo plastic ones, though. I'll spend a little more and get pretty sparkly ones at Old Navy or something, and they definitely aren't "trashy" or "tacky." I'd wear them all year if I could, since I hate wearing socks and closed shoes.
25I wear them all the time. I dress pretty casually just about everyday so I don't think I look tacky or trashy. I love them and really don't care what people think about me when I wear them. I have to say though, in Wisconsin nearly everyone I see is wearing them.
26I wear these all summer long!
27I love my Rainbows and when I am not at work, I live in them!
28I don't wear flip flops anymore - I find them tacky. I prefer to wear sandals, flats not heels. Sure, they're pretty damn close to flip flops, but at least they stay on your feet.
29I wear my Rainbows constantly. And I went to Auburn, so this was exciting to read!
30I wear Timberland or Merrell ones that have arch support and are more durable. More sandal, less flip flop.
31I wear flip flops year around. However, I frequently wear wedges and flats but once I'm home I always slip on flip flops.
32I live by the beach in San Diego, so I wear flip-flops basically all year long, especially my comfy Reefs that I've had for 4 or 5 years and still have wonderful heel and arch support. I don't think they're anymore tacky or trashy than some flats or some wedges are (sorry but I'd rather be in a pair of flip-flops any day than plastic or patent platform hooker heels that are so prevelant), and I think they're a lot less ridiculous and much more comfortable than the gladiator and flat leather sandals you see everywhere without any arch support.
33I never wear flip flops. They give people troll-like feet, and they are completely unflattering to the leg. I live in the Texas heat too, but I put on sandals and flats. I can see that they would be beach appropriate, but otherwise, no.
34I wear them all the time in the Summer. I love flats, but my feet get so sweaty/stinky, and I haven't found a way to resolve that issue in the warm months. I have a few other sandals I wear in the Summer, too, but they always give me blisters. If I am going to walk around a lot, I suck it up and put on socks and shoes.
35I wear them as much as possible when it's warm enough. Sandals are uncomfortable and flats are awkward and unflattering.
At 29, I will wear them to commute to work (with a suit) and switch to a heel once I'm there. I see no reason for some of you to judge me for that. I also wore them for my wedding.
I agree people need to pick up their damn feet and control the flip-flop sound (it's really not that hard), but then again there are plenty of people who shuffle around in ANY shoe.
With enough heel wearing, my feet are pissed off at me anyway - try finding a cute pump in wide - so letting them recover in flip flops or (the horror) my beloved Crocs is essential.
36I used to wear them more but noticed how I always needed to scrunch my toes. So now I wear flats, sandals and peep-toe pumps in the summer and save the flip flops for washing my car.
37i think people do what they see others do, such as wear thongs.
i think people like to just slip on thongs and go.
i think people like the freedom of thongs.
i think it is a style or a fashion for some to wear thongs.
i think thongs can be a cheap alternative to regular shoes.
i think it can be a habit to wear thongs.
just my thoughts,
..and well i've worn thongs during a whole summer almost everyday, and i'll tell you what.. my feet are usually very soft, but wearing thongs sure dried the skin on my feet. made them feel rough and thick. so i quit wearing them. i don't remember any pain from wearing them, but i think i prefer socks and shoes for everyday, and maybe i'll wear thongs when i go to the beach, or maybe out on the weekend.
38I'd like to add that there are a billion different types of flip flops. So if you're going to say flip flops or trashy/tacky, you're going to have to give me a good argument on how a nice pair of rainbows or reefs is trashy. sheesh.
39I own a couple of pairs of nice leather, thin-strapped flip flops that I wear in the heat of summer instead of flats. But, mostly, it's just something to keep my feet from getting dirty outside, because I usually kick them off when I'm inside my destination. I find that I have to change the way I walk in order to wear them (more than just the toe scrunching, because naturally I walk toe-heel instead of heel-toe), and it gets uncomfortable after a while. I would never wear them for any distance walking.
I would like to say, however, that I go to great lengths to make sure my feet look the best they can look since flip flops put them on display and feet are funny-looking anyway without adding a layer of gross.
40I'm with bythesea. I live in South Florida and out of necessity, we have different standards of fashion down here. Flip flops are the norm. I love shoes and I wear heels, pumps, sandals, sneakers, boots, whatever. But when I want to be comfortable while dealing with the heat+humidity, I wear flip flops.
By the way, it IS possible to walk in flip flops without making that overly obnoxious flap flap sound AND without crunching your toes - I guess it might take some practice for some people? Also, you have to buy shoes that fit properly and that aren't slippery.
41I wear them sometimes esp. after a pedicure. I like wedge sandals alot.
42All summer long! I love them!
43I first heard about adverse effects of flip-flop wearing on Good Morning America. I *love* flip flops. I wear them all the time, 3 seasons out of the year. I like flats, but I have wide feet, so flats still hurt if I have to walk a long distance (but I'm dressed too nicely for sneakers), so I go with flip flops. Aside from the space between my big toe and second toe widening, I don't really see or feel any adverse effects. I hope my feet won't be too messed up though because I don't think I can give up flip flops. They should make better and healthier flip flops!
44I might be guilty of the flip-flop shuffle, I have to pay more attention. In the summer I either wear flip-flops or go barefoot (although only at home! going barefoot around town is just gross.) Occasionally I'll heels in the summer although I lean towards flats.
45I WEAR THEM EVERYDAY.
dare to call me tacky or trashy?????????????
well what if I said I'm VERY TALL (I'd KILLLLLL to wear heels
),
have big feet that sweat a lot (stinky ballet flats anyone?),
and my outfits aren't sporty enough to wear Vans or sneakers everyday?
trashy is a really really REALLY. offensive and annoying word. please use it with care?
46and I think gladiator sandals are NOT tacky.
47Yeah, the "hollywood look" is overdone, but they're classy.
Especially for tall people like me that can't wear high heels and need to rely on sandals and flip flops!
I hate flip flops! First off, they are uncomfortable and chafe my toes; second, I too have cankles and prefer a sandal with a heel; third, my toenails/toes are so dang ugly from running that I'd never bare them in public; and fourth, they're bad for your feet. I don't mind if other people wear them though...hey, they're your feet.
48Flip flops are not professional and they hurt my feet. I wear my TB flats or my gladiator sandals.
49At least once a day, 10 months out of the year! I don't shuffle my feet if that makes it any better. Flip flops are the only flat shoes (other than runners - which I only wear working out) that I'll wear. I find other flat shoes are not flattering, and even though I'm not short (5'7'') most flats make me look that way.
And, it was 115 degrees here today, so I have a good excuse.
