When drinking red wine, I enjoy my glass knowing I am reaping some health benefits with each sip. As with everything, moderation is key, and drinking more than one glass a day can tip the balance and be detrimental to your health. Here are five reasons to stop after having just one glass of wine.
- One glass of wine a day can reduce you risk of having a heart attack, but two glasses of wine a day increases your chance for developing breast cancer.
- One glass of wine a day can increase bone strength, but two or more glasses daily can weaken bones. This decrease in bone density can put you at risk for developing osteoporosis.
- One glass of red wine a day may help you stay thin, but two or more glasses a day may raise the fats found in your blood.
To see my final two reasons, read more.
- Drinking wine in moderation may help improve your ability to create and maintain memories, but two or more glasses, especially when coupled with tobacco use, can hasten the onset of Alzheimer's.
- Drinking one glass of wine a day can lower your chances of having a stroke, but drinking more can raise your chances of having one.
If you use the health benefits of wine to justify or rationalize having a glass, stick to the one 4-oz. glass. Moderation is key when it comes to drinking alcohol. A little bit does the trick, but a little more than that can be risky.

I dont really like red... how bout white?
1I'm not much of a drinker so managing to stick to one glass is very easy.
2missbanana, white wine def. doesn't have the same benefits :/
3This is the most depressing thing ever to read on a late Friday afternoon. I'm sticking my fingers in my ears *la la la *.
4haha im with you kgtg lalaaalalalalalalalalalalallalaa
5fit, i think you have a typo. Your article says glass. You mean bottle, right?
6Agreed kgtg1!
7Hmmm... well the wine glasses I use at home hold half a bottle, so I think I'll stick to my usual 2 glasses
8I love it kgtg1 and Tami715!!! I know everything in moderation is best. But it just sounds unbelievable to me that one glass is GOOD for you and two glasses is BAD for you. Where is the middle ground?
9i think one glass is the middle ground between NONE and TOO MUCH
10Yep, this advice kind of goes out my window at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon
11I usually stop after one drink, but sometimes I have a LITTLE more than that
12At first I thought this said reasons to shop after one glass, and I was much more interested.
13Ooh torgleson... I LOVE having a nice lunch with a few cocktails, then spending all afternoon shopping. Helps to loosen the purse strings
14The thing to notice here is that this is discussing one glass of one PER DAY versus two glasses of wine PER DAY. The way I see it, there's nothing wrong with celebrating your Friday with three or four glasses of wine, if you're not drinking on other days of the week, because that still averages out to less than one glass per day. While I can't speak for the level of fats in your blood, as a cancer researcher, I can tell you that drinking all your wine on one day of the week versus doling it out over the week won't change the chances of getting breast cancer.
15If I don't stop at one glass, I get drunk! I'm such a lightweight, I can't even tolerate two glasses of wine. One is just perfect for me and creates a nice buzz.
16I'm a lightweight too Lo Lo! Anything more and I'll be gauranteed to have a bruise the next day
17actually white wine CAN have some of the same benefits as red, because white wine can be made from colored grapes. what is added to the red wine is that the skin is allowed to settle in the "juice" so that its color rubs off. the flesh from the grape is used for both wines.
18also, red wines just tend to be fermented for a longer amount of time, which might cause the benefits?
the alocohol levels however a pretty much the same in both types.
Arthur - LOL!!! I didn't consider the option of "0 glasses" - it never even crossed my mind!
julieulie, thanks for the interesting info!
19thanks! this is really useful information
20wow. This is amazing to think that one glass can be beneficial, but anything over that is detrimental!
21WHY does life have to torture me like this?? Wine is soo good, and my family is italian and makes their own, so I can't stop at one glass. But the first reason alone is enough to make me think I should, as I'm at risk from my parents for both heart disease and breast cancer!
22I am a teetotaler, so this debate doesn't pertain to me as much. The few times I have drank any alcoholic beverage, I ended up with a severe katzenjammer the following day. That coupled with the fact that my father is a recovered alcoholic is enough to dissuade me from consuming any more wine, liquor, etc.
23But the bottle contains 2 glasses each!
24I love merlot, so it's nice to know it's healthy in moderation. I have a glass of merlot once or twice a week with dinner.
