Tainted Tomatoes Now in 30 States: Are You Avoiding Them?

Unfortunately, the salmonella tainted tomato problem is growing, and reported cases have been found in 30 states now, including Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. Six cases have been reported from New York City raising the total number of confirmed cases to 383, and counting. Forty-eight people have been hospitalized after eating these unsafe veggies, and now the FDA is saying it may be "impossible to trace the ultimate source of the tainted tomatoes." That's not very comforting, is it? The tracking difficulties stem from the fact that tomatoes are often sold without tags. Also, by the time people become symptomatic, there's rarely a tainted tomato left to test. Since they were the main supplies of tomatoes when the salmonella outbreak began, Mexico and Florida remain top on the list of possible sources of contaminated produce. Still plugging along in their investigation, the FDA has asked Mexican health authorities to test for cases of this exact strain of salmonella.

For now, it's best to continue avoiding raw red plum, red Roma, or red round tomatoes unless they were grown in specific states or countries that FDA has deemed safe (check this list). Also, all grape tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, and home-grown tomatoes are still considered safe to eat. Tomatoes are supposed to hit stores and restaurants soon, but now I'm a little leery about eating any until this matter is cleared up.

I am curious to know that with . . .

I usually eat at least one whole tomato a day, so I switched to tomatoes on the vine. I can't not eat tomatoes. The horror.

I don't like tomatoes. I've been avoiding them for about 24 years.

I've switched to locally grown for now, but in light of some of the recent scares I think I might try to eat as much local produce as I can from now on.

I need to eat a tomato each day or I go crazy, so I haven't stopped. Now I only buy tomatoes still on the vine, which haven't been called out as "bad." Never been a fan of hothouse or roma tomatoes.

I have been growing my own for a couple months, but have yet to eat any - just started getting fruit. I still eat tomatoes though.

Local tomatoes for me. I was a huge fan of Roma and only bought those, but now I'm sticking to the ones on the vine. Food poisoning is the worst.

I don't think I've eaten any for about three weeks now. The thought of salmonella just isn't appetizing.

I've been eating salsa and tomatoes that are supposedly only from California, which is supposed to be untainted. No problems yet... I won't stop eating unless they stop selling. I love tomatoes!

I always buy on the vine and others not on the recall list.

    I eat tomatoes almost daily.

I would think most salsa should be safe unless it is the uncooked salsa fresca. Salmonella dies when boiled for something like 15 seconds. I suppose people could blanch their tomatoes?

I love tomatos! I live in South Carolina, and we're not affected. Also, all restaurants and stores around here pulled their tomatos, if they're imported!

I had no idea that this tomato thing was such a serious ordeal - but then again I live in an unaffected state and always go local with my co-op. I would only think about it if I lived in one of the states that's had a lot of cases reported - and then you can just switch to different tomatoes.

I have only been buying grape tomatoes and locally grown regular ones. So yeah, I've been eating tomatoes this whole time.

I don't worry about it. Theres - what - about 120 people who got sick? There are millions of people who didn't get sick. I live in CA too, and I heard that there's not a problem here.

Plus - I have health insurance Smiling

I don't really go out of my way to avoid them but I don't have them all the time anyway. The only tomato anything I had recently was the tomato sauce I used for the spagetti I made myself today which was cooked of course. I'm assuming I'm safe with that.

Luckyslushy: me too! I'm glad I'm not the only one....

I hate the polls on this site, how about "yes"or "no" then I could just answer "no" without having to pretend I grow my own stupid tomatoes! GRRR.

I had a huge urge for mexican food so I decided to go off my diet and go to Taco Bell. Sad They had tomatoes. But I only had half of what I got since my boyfriend and I just ate half of it. Mmmm, tomatoes are such a guilty pleasure right now when they're not available.

Still eating the vine-on ones, while waiting for mine to ripen in my garden. I can't go without tomatoes.

People who switched to growing their own or buying locally grown tomatoes should stay that way! That is so much better for the environment Smiling

I would love to grow my own tomatoes and other foods but I live right near the woods and this area sucks for that since the animals eat it all. When I get a better place for that though, I'm going to do that and make my own compost pile to make good soil for it.

i've avoided them and it's hard caues i LOVE tomatoes. i'm so fearful about this sort of thing. for the first marjority of the scare, NJ had been 'safe' of the contanimation, but i'm glad that i didn't have any there either since they are now reporting cases. it's just hard when your veggies (or fruits) have things going on. last year it was spinach, what's next?

salmanellosis isn't even as bad as it sounds. Unless you're really old, really young, or are otherwise immune compromised. Anyway, I encourage you all to come to NJ and buy locally grown tomatoes. Mostly because my livelihood depends on it (live on a farm...).
