Cool Healthy Gadget: Produce Saver

Sick of your fruits and veggies going bad immediately (or so it seems) after you take them home?

These new Produce Savers from Rubbermaid keep fruits and vegetables fresh and crisp up to 33 percent longer as compared to other traditional food-storage methods. The containers allow the produce to breathe while also separating it from moisture, making getting your five a day a lot more attainable when you know it's going to be fresh. I really like that I can bring one of these into work, knowing my in-season fruit will not get squished on my way and will stay fresher longer.

I am absolutely going to get some of these. My produce always goes bad so quickly and it drives me crazy.

I don't throw away much produce because I eat it really fast. I usually make my produce last longer by rinsing it off, drying it, and putting it in a big ziploc bag with a slightly damp paper towel. I store the bag partially open and the produce stays fresh all week. I don't wash mushrooms or berries though...they keep better when you don't wash them.

Hey, has anyone tried those "green bags" that claim to make your produce last longer? Just wondering.

Consumer Reports tried the green bags (the ones that "capture" ethylene), and found that plain old ziplocs worked better.

these are the same concept as those 'green bags' that you see infomercials for. they let the gasses out and keep your veggies fresh for longer. great way to help with cutting costs since i know that i spend a lot more on things when they don't last long enough for me...and i throw out rotten food.
