Trying to lose weight? Then eat a hearty breakfast.
New research has found that over several months, obese women who ate half their daily calories first thing fared better with long term weight loss than those eating a much smaller amount. They also found that having a small breakfast could actually boost food cravings. How so? Well, the belief is that when we don't eat enough at breakfast we're more likely to get hungry and snack on foods that are high in fat and sugar throughout the day.
I believe I am living proof of this theory. If I don't have a breakfast, or if I have a particularly small breakfast, I find myself to be starving by 10 a.m. While it is difficult at times, I try to make breakfast my biggest meal of the day.
What about you? Do you snack more, or go overboard at lunch, if you skip breakfast?

I've been trying to do this too, but it IS difficult - especially if you don't have a lot of time in the mornings. I find myself satisfied after a bowl of cereal / a slice of toast but then I'm peckish again by 10am.
Though of course, I also try to live by the rule of eating '6 small meals a day' - so it's very easy to have a small healthy snack which keeps me full till lunch time.
I had a chicken breast for breakfast once, and I felt full until lunch - but it was weird! I can't imagine having a meal of chicken, veggies and rice for breakfast like Cameron Diaz does...
1Most of the time I'm not hungry at all in the morning, yet I know that I should eat breakfast. So now I've come up with my New Breakfast Plan: I make a smoothie (little bit of orange juice, some non fat yoghurt, a banana and some strawberries, or any other kind of fruit) and I make a sandwich. I drink the smoothie throughout my morning routine, and the sandwich is for when I'm on the bus or train, going to work. That way, I don't need to force myself to eat a lot right away, but I still have eaten a healthy breakfast.
2I think it depends on WHICH cereal I have for breakfast. If I have Kashi Go Lean Crunch, I'm usually good until lunch. If I have cheerios or something with significantly less fibre and calories, I'm ravenous by 10 am!
3I'm never hungry when I first wake up. When I get to work, I usually grab a muffin, bagel, or a bowl of fruit from the cafeteria, so that I'm eating *something* in the morning. In retrospect, I think I do last longer on the bowl of fruit.
4I make sure to have something that keeps me full for a while before lunch. Having oat bran hot cereal with berries keeps me full for a long time.
5I always eat breakfast, twice each morning! I don't think I could make it through the day if I skipped breakfast. I usually have something small, like a piece of toast around 7:00 am and then fruit and yogurt or oatmeal around 9:30 am.
I if eat a bowl of cereal, even Kashi, for breakfast I find I crave more sugary carbs throghout the day.
6Must. Eat. Breakfast.
I consider myself a recovering cereal addict. I used to have 2 huge bowls every morning. Now I try to only let myself have cereal 3-4 days a week, and it's usually Kashi GoLean or something else healthy. AND I measure my servings. I have been trying harder lately to do something different for breakfast, but making sure I get protein & fiber. This morning it's cottage cheese, fresh blackberries & blueberries, a light whole wheat english muffin with PB on one half and almond butter on the other half! MMmmmmmm!
7I start the day off with my favourite spelt-amarant-fruit cereal. I used to have no feelings of hunger whatsoever in the morning but after having forced myself to eat something - anything - in the morning, I have eased into a routine where I cannot go out of the house without having had my cereal with soy milk and maybe some kind of fruit.
8Honestly, I find eating breakfast gives me MORE of an appitite during the day then if I don't eat breakfast!
9I was aware of this fact but didn't actually implement it really. I don't usually eat full breakfast, like I know I should. But yes, my lunch is infact my biggest and fullest meal most of the days. The reiteration of the fact really pushes me in the positive direction!
10Great article. Thanks for posting.
11OK, you just made me hungry. Reading about big breakfasts has that effect on me... I have breakfast everyday, usually it's 1/4 cup of Kashi Berry Granola mixed with a Dannon Activia Light, that genereally keeps me pretty full until about 11pm.
I also believe in having small healthy snacks 2 in the afternoon and one in the morning, so when I remember, I bring something to snack on at around 10am...and usually it's that snack that makes me really hungry, and makes me want to eat more. It's dangerous.
12i always have a huge breakfast! 2-3 bowls of cereal, each with 2 cups in it, topped with about a cup of mixed berries and soymilk plus a banana on the side and 2 cups of tea/coffee! keeps me going till lunch or i'd be a mess!
13hmmm... this is not true for everyone. i only eat an apple or a yogurt for breakfast and i feel fine until 12 or 1, when it is lunch time. it just depends on who you are
14i'm always hungry in the morning. I have to ea breakfast. Sometimes it's oatmeal, sometimes ezekial bread and cottage cheese, always have green tea. I can't function without breakfast
15I find that even if I'm not hungry in the morning, when I don't eat breakfast, I'm starving by lunch.
16I am a pattern eater, so I eat everyday at 8:00, 10:30, 1:30, 4:00 and 7:00/7:30. And if I get off track in the morning, my whole day is ruined.
17I have to eat breakfast or I get grouchy and shaking. And when I get like that I give into the company candy dish! So I try to eat a bowl of cereal or some slices of wheat toast with honey. I usually have a snack around 11 or 11:30, and that's usually a piece of fruit or a Power bar.
18I can't get through my day without breakfast. I have always been that way. It really is the most important meal of the day.
19I usually don't eat breakfast, but I know I should. I'm trying to get back on track with that.
20I always eat breakfast. My parents have always been strict about eating 3 meals a day so whenever I don't eat breakfast, I always have a pounding headache. Also, my PHE teacher explain about a million times the benefits of eating a well-balanced breakfast and I guess that just reinforced my eating breakfast.
21I eat oatmeal and milk for breakfast around 7. Then I have a granola bar and yogurt around 9:30. I eat 5 times a day...it must be working because I've lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks...just eating healthy food 5 times a day!
22I'm never hungry in the morning, so I just usually eat my breakfast when I start to get hungry (usually around 10 or 11). When I do eat, it's usually oatmeal and a piece of fruit and some coffee. It keeps me going for the rest of the morning and I don't snack at all until lunch (which is also usually kind of on the late side).
23breakfast is my favorite meal of the day
i'm always starving when
i wake up. it's always either oatmeal or some healthy cereal like Kashi and some fruit.
24A huge breakfast does not settle my stomach very well. fruit/oatmeal/yogurt is fine for me. i prefer it on the light side
