Summer is a time to let loose, but don't let too loose says Newsweek. When the mercury rises, so do the calories in some of our favorite alcoholic beverages. Here are the top six cocktails that'll do a number on your diet:
- Margarita. If you use a sugar-saturated Margarita mix, add tequila or Triple Sec, and then pour the drink into a salt-rimmed glass, the result could set you back 850 calories, Jackie Warner, a fitness trainer and the star of the Bravo network's Work Out says.
- Mudslide. A 12-ounce frozen mudslide—made with vodka, Kahlua liqueur, Bailey's Irish Cream, and vanilla ice cream — tastes like an alcoholic milkshake and is just about as unhealthy. It has 820 calories and 27.2 grams of fat.
- Piña Colada. If you like piña coladas, watch out: the rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut drink can contain up to 650 calories.
There's three more so read more.
- Mint Julep. You don't need a straw hat or a horserace to drink a mint julep. But the concoction of bourbon and mint-and-sugar syrup might set your diet back. One glass contains about 472 calories.
- Mojito. The classic mojito — a mixture of lime juice, sugar, mint leaves, rum, and soda — will run you about 242 calories.
- Daiquiri. A frozen strawberry daiquiri, made from strawberry schnapps, rum, lime juice, sugar, and strawberries contains about 220 calories.
As fun as they are, especially a mudslide — yum! — I think I'll be sticking to my occasional glass of wine. What about you?

Mmmm now im craving a thousand calorie margarita!!!
1I'm lucky in that I don't particularly care for alcohol/getting drunk. The only drink I REALLY enjoy, and it's once in a blue moon, is a Midori Sour. I'll have the occasional glass of wine as well, but I always get nauseous or get a bad headache and immediately regret it.
2Mojitos? Nooooooooooooooo! hehe
3I'm still going to be drinking margaritas.... I'll just pretend I didn't read this.
I heard a good low cal drink is flavored vodka (like Raspberry) and soda water. I'm quite partial to my sugary drinks but maybe next time I'm at a bar I'll give it a try. Has anybody else tried this drink?
4Thats actually not bad for a mojito. Its like a big beer.
5Luckyslushy - Try grape vodka and seltzer. My friend was drinking it the other night and it was pretty good. Kind of like grape Fanta.
If anyone is a beer drinker, Mich Ultra has put out 3 new beers for summer - Pomegranate Raspberry, Lime Cactus and my favorite Tuscan Orange Grapefruit.
6hey! i need help! im allergic to vodka... the usual suggestion of a low cal alcoholic beverage
.... any good suggestions?
7Mmmmm to me summer is magaritas by the pool ... and magaritas on the outdoor patio and my favorite Mexican restaurant with my friends. Good thing I eat strictly all week, so my weekends can be fun filled with frosty beverages and yummy beers
. We only live once!
8citron + raspberry vodka + a teeny drop of Grenadine + sugar rimmed glass = yay!
9Hate to break it to you, but flavored vodka (grape, raspberry, whatever) is full of sugar. Your best choice is PLAIN vodka and soda water (which frankly tastes disgusting but it's the lowest calorie alcoholic beverage you can get).
10You can do plain vodka, and soda water, with lemon and lime wedges. Thats what I typically do, it doesn't taste bad. But I like vodka
Also, I choose to believe the alcohol kills anything in the lemon and lime wedges that was in
that FitSugar report a few days ago!
11I'm the same as kgtg. I've never been partial to sugary drinks (they give me the worst hangovers by far). My drink of choice is vodka with soda water, and extra lime wedges. Sometimes just the vodka and lime
Very occasionally I'll drink vodka with cranberry juice.
As for margaritas (my favorite drink when I'm poolside!) we make them with Simply Lime juice, tequila, and lime wedges over ice. No salt for me!
12Oh and kgtg...the acidity of the lemon and lime wedges helps kill off any bugs as well
13I'm not sure if those flavored vodkas have a lot of sugar. Here's a website with the listed ingredients of some different flavored vodkas listed:

babycat- what about flavored rum - can you do rum? Bacardi melon rum is really good!
Lesley- I'll try the grape vodka and seltzer next time I'm out!
14I love mojitos! yay for me!
15Oh my. I love margaritas and mojitos.
16yep...occasional glass of wine for me too!
17I'm a wine girl, but if I'm going to indulge in a cocktail, which is rare, I'm not going too much about the calories.
However, for you margarita lovers Hungry girl has a couple low-cal margarita options: http://www.hungry-girl.com/week/weeklydetails.php?isid=1034. These are a bit too artificial sweetener for me, though.
18Alcohol prevents your body from burning fat...No thanks!
19I have my own signature cocktail that I make: plain vodka + Fresca + one pack of Orange Sunrise Crystal Light To-Go. Put it in a blender with ice and blend it up. It's really refreshing and fairly low cal (depending on how much vodka you use!).
20I don't drink all that often and so when I do, I don't worry about it too much, because it's usually one and that's it.
21I like to drink vodka, frozen berries and either soda water or soda pop- gasp, like sprite. The berries flavor things and adding a sweetness.
My signature drink is scotch, which I am holding in my avatar.
Sugar/alcohol combinations tend to make me sick to my stomach.
Mojitos at Gueros (Austin, Tx) are tasty though.
22vodka + cranberry juice for me
23Sugary cocktails give me a terrible headache--even one is enough to do me in. What's the point of a hangover without ever getting a buzz? I'll stick to wine, beer, and simple vodka drinks (all in moderation, of course).
24This is why I don't drink cocktails anymore.
I'll stick to my unsweetened iced tea.
25Good thing I only have something like this once or less per year! I just don't drink.
26Oh bummer margarita's are my favorite!!!
27mmmm pina colada...
this will have no effect on my drinking.
28that's what the gym is for
you can make authentic margaritas for fewer calories, use fresh lime juice, a little sugar, tequila, triple sec and you are good to go.
29darn Pina Colada!
30Well, I am definitely not shocked by the amount of calories in any of these drinks! I usually jsut go for a vodka soda with a splash of cranberry - but even that can add up the cals real quick.
Lesley - I'm loving you grape vodka and seltzer suggestion! Definitely trying that the next time I'm out! Also - the Mich Ultra pomegrante beer is phenomenal - I had the opportunity to taste it at an event recently and I loved it! Highly recommend!
And Spectra - you're idea of adding in the crystal light lemonades is great! I love that even nin my water, as well as Fiber One flavored water mixers taht give extra fiber (just another suggestion!)
31Drink Becks Light! Its only 64 calories!
32I drink beer and sometimes wine. I don't like sweet drinks loaded with juices and flavored alcohols... BUT I do love a good margarita! Also, I fell in love with Mojitos while in Puerto Rico, we went to the Parrot Club, the bar that invented the mojito. It was fantastic, one of the best things I've ever drank!
33Whoever said flavored vodkas are loaded with sugar is wrong. They have the same amount of calories as un-flavored vodka. They are infused with the flavor, no sugar added.
34On the rare occasions that I drink, I usually drink either wine, beer, vodka (with Blue Sky soda), or coffee liqueur mixed with pomegranate liqueur on the rocks. And my limit is always three drinks, even if I'm at home. I just don't like to feel hungover or bloated from the empty calories.
35I love summery drinks! It's the only time of year I drink, so the extra calories don't bother me.
36Currently I'm addicted to malibu+pineapple juice+and cream! It's like heaven in a glass. However many calories are in THAT one I don't need to know!
You just listed all of my favorite drinks. I'm so depressed =(
37My favorite drink is bourbon + soda water. The only calories come from the alcohol!
If I'm going for a fruity drink though, coconut rum + diet sunkist is pretty freaking delicious.
38oh well - i can cape cod it i guess.
