Salmonella Outbreak: Now in 16 States

On Friday I told you about the salmonella food-poisoning outbreak reported in nine states (New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, Illinois, and Indiana). Contaminated raw, uncooked tomatoes are thought to be the culprit, and unfortunately more cases of illness have cropped up in seven other states including California, Connecticut, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Investigators believe the tainted tomatoes are also to blame for the most recent recent illnesses. So far a total of 111 people have come down with the same Salmonella "Saintpaul" infection.

Although the source of these rotten tomatoes has yet to be determined, it's believed that you probably don't need to worry about cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, or homegrown tomatoes. The FDA also assures that Roma, red plum, and round red tomatoes from Arkansas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Belgium, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands, and Puerto Rico are not associated with this outbreak. I don't know about you, but I'm thinking it may just be easier to avoid raw tomatoes for a while. What do you think?

I buy my tomatoes from a local organic farmer, I think I'll still be eating tomatoes.

I live in California, so I heard this report last night during dinner...as I was eating a big juicy red tomato stuffed with cottage cheese. Oops.

It was bought attached to the vine, though!

It's lovely to hear such an announcement just as you're halfway finished with a plate of the food. Same thing happened to me when there was the spinach reports, I think it was.

Yeah, no restaurants around here are serving tomatoes. Is this nationwide? I live in SC.

I'm not a big tomato fan, I think I've only ate them 2 or 3 times in the past couple of months. I'll be able to give them up easily!

I'm going to keep eating my grape tomatoes...I got them from the farm stand and I'm pretty sure they're ok.

I am in California and all of the eateries on campus have removed their tomato products. I am not worried 1)I just ate my last tomato (on the vine and cooked) and Im moving out of my apartment so no new tomatoes for awhile. 2)Im moving home for the summer and my mom is growing her own tomatoes 3)I wash everything before I eat it.

It's really weird how widely spread out all the states are. You would think it would be contained to one area. I've still got some in the fridge from a little while ago and I'll wait it out before buying more.

Here in TX all tomatoes are out of the eateries. I think I will avoid them for a little while. Just to be safe.

But cooked tomatoes are ok. No reason to completely give them up. Fresh sauce?

Great piece. I heard a blip on this while I was at the gym and have had a heck of a time getting all of this information in one place. Kudos Fit! And I did go to the CDC site. So yay Fit!

Well I went to Subway the other day in NY and no tomatoes not sure if they were just exercising caution but another thing to get annoyed about.

I am making a more concerted effort to buy local. it may be a bit out of my way but i am doing it. i will either drive upstate or go to the union square farmer's market.

"California tomatoes are fine! People need to calm down."

mmm maybe untrue. My friend got salmonella poisoning on thursday/friday. Probably from tomatoes because that was in his previous meal to the doctor diagnosis
