It's good to have a few entrées in your freezer for a quick and healthy meal. So while at the grocery store the other day, I decided to try the Mac & Cheese from Helen's Kitchen.

Is there some unwritten rule that frozen meals have to look drastically different then the photo on the box? That gorgeous picture shows eight pieces of broccoli and I ended up with a measly four. I was not impressed. The flavor was also a little too mild for my taste – overall it was rather bland. Texturewise, the cheese had a weird thick and lumpy consistency. Plus for the amount of sodium that was actually in this meal, it tasted like it was low sodium. The few bits of broccoli were good, a little chewy, but still tasted fresh. The best part were the little bits of tofu. They were firm and had a great salty and herby flavor. I did like that the ingredients were organic, and it was made with wheat pasta, real butter, and asiago and cheddar cheeses. I'd definitely be up for trying out other meals made by this company, but if I'm in the mood for a cheesy-pasta-veggie dish, I'd much rather eat Amy's Country Cheddar Bowl instead. |

That looks pretty gross.
1I'm all for eating healthier, but frozen meals are so loaded with sodium! That is why I don't buy them anymore! I used to buy a Lean Cuisine or South Beach frozen dinner once or twice a week to have for a quick lunch with low calories, but the salt content is very high in most of them.
2what the hell, it looks so much better on the box!
3That's kind of a bummer, the picture on the box looked so yummy!
4I've never heard of that brand before
5Yeah, I'm not a fan of processed meals...they always have too much sodium and they never fill me up.
6I dont like frozen meals either, the ones with chicken always taste rubbery to me
7Frozen organic meals can be pretty good and they tend to be a much smarter choice when compared to a regular processed meal.
Mac and cheese is one of those things I just do not understand. I cannot stand the stuff and it must be because I do not associate it with childhood and comfort. For me comfort food involves a homemade flour tortillas, fideo or arroz con leche.
8Wow, I eat Helen's Kitchen meals all the time and I also eat Amy's and Lean Cuisine, etc.... I also cook lots at home, but for lunch at work I take Helen's Kitchen to me at work. It's a bummer you were not excited, but I love the meals. I got eating the meals after I read in health magazine that they were their pick last year, I've lost weight on them and find them yummy and satisfying. My favorite, I must admit is the Indian Curry and Thai Yellow Curry. True Amy's Mac & Cheese is good, but Helen's uses a milder cheese selection, so its a matter of personal choice. I have to admit that their burritos are my favorite because unlike the other stuff out there, they actually use a whole wheat tortilla.
9Come on! I'm getting sick of your with ONE brand obsession - give us some variety please! I love trying other, smaller, lesser known companies out there, that are trying to support the organic cause from a grass roots approach. I loved trying Helen's Kitchen products and also products from Organic Bistro, Indian Life etc. Helen's Kitchen Mac and Cheese actually uses higher end cheeses - like asigo and the cheese is organic too. Your Amy's Mac and Cheese is more like Kraft Mac and Cheese - so if you like that cheap yellow/orange crap then I guess you would like that gluck you are raving about! Finally there is a brand that thought, maybe we would like to eat food that isn't colored with some yellow coloring (no matter how natural you try to say "Yellow" or should I say "orange" mac and cheese is - it is NOT!!! Cheddar Cheese is actually not naturally that color without some additional ingredients!!!).
