Hamburger, Veggie Burger, or Turkey Burger?

I am a carnivore who is working to eat lower on the food chain. I experiment with meatless entrées, but when at a BBQ and confronted with a choice between a veggie burger and a regular burger, I always opt for the latter – and usually with cheese.

Since BBQ season is in full swing, what do you eat . . .

I am a meatosaurus also, but i have enjoyed grilling a big portobello mushroom cap as the patty on the bbq as a veggie option, with some goat cheese added just at the end of cooking it delicious.

Also my absolutely favorite thing to do is grilling a big round of pineapple on the bbq to make a tropical chichen burger.

    YUM

I grill frequently during the summer so most of the time I just cook veggie burgers so I'm not overloading on red meat. I'll splurge once or twice a summer and eat a delicious, juicy burger, typically of my own making.

Most veggie burgers are awful (and don't even get me started on tempeh burgers!) but Loblaws (in Canada) have a vegetarian Portobello mushroom and Swiss cheese burger that is so incredible I know serious carnivores who now only eat these burgers at their barbecues.

I don't get a chance to grill or BBQ much, so when I do, I'll eat a hamburger and load it up. I rarely eat red meat, so it's a special treat that I really like. Plus, it's out of convenience too - here in Nebraska everyone eats meat, so when you head out, chances are it's the only option if you want to eat!

I would chose Bison, but that is not always the choic. If the hamburgers are home made (not from a frozen box :PUKE:) then I choose those. But if they are frozen then I ALWAYS choose a veggie burger. Turkey burgers are WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Hamburger, no mayo or ketchup. I like to do it right and just occasionally.

I love turkey burgers, or sometimes chicken. Beef is fine if there are no other choices. I hate veggie burgers.

Turkey burgers actually taste REALLY good for how much better they are for you. I also like Veggie.

burger and bbq don't belong together in germany Laughing out loud luckily! since i hate burgers... we usually eat only bratwürste, steak or baked potatoes, with a lot of salad and bread.

I like black bean burgers (having one for lunch today). I don't eat land dwelling animals so it's always the veggie option for me. I made a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato basil bread on the grill a couple of nights ago (it was fabulous!).

Some times a big fat burger hits the spot. Its not so bad for you if you make it yourself, put it on a multi-grain bun and load it up with veggies.

Hate to sound like a hick here, but the picture actually shows grilling. Barbecue involves the slow cooking of meat that is typically so fatty that it would send most readers to the gym after a quick trip to the cardiologist. But to answer the question, it is brisket, pulled pork, and ribs, in that order.

at home by myself i eat veggie burgers, but when at a party i just cant eat one--i need the real thing (and i need to have cheese too!)

and i think fit was just calling the actual get together a BBQ, not the way they cook the meat.

I have a hard time making decisions, so I'd most likely try & find someone to go halfsies with me with any of them. Seeing as I'm in KY a veggie burger at a BBQ is VERRRRRY rare (at least in my circles), but a turkey burger isn't as unusual to find.

If I bought it it would be turkey or chicken - but I normally get my BBQ at friends or families houses so it is usually a beef burger then. But hey beggers can't be choosers Smiling

It's so weird to me that people seem to eat turkey burgers as a less-tasty-but-healthier alternative to beef burgers. Beef burgers are good, but the flavor of turkey is so delicious, especially with a big juicy tomato and maybe some avocado. I wonder if people think beef burgers taste better just because they're less healthy. I just love the taste of turkey burgers.

Homeade veggie burger with beans and whole grains (like barley or brown rice) and lots of veggies are the best and most flavorful. California's The Counter makes a veggie burger worth imitating.

i've been giving a vegetarian diet a try for the last few months, so sometimes for dinner i pop a boca burger in the microwave and eat it wrapped in lettuce (only 70 calories so i don't consider it a splurge).
in general, i'm a firm believer that the occasional splurge is not only forgiveable, but healthy for mind body and soul, so i think that if you're only going to be going to a couple bar-b-qs this summer, go for what you want, but if you're bar-b-qing every week i can see cutting back.
for that reason, when i go to a barbq, i don't have any of the barbecued meats, but i'll have the not-so-good for you sides and some dessert.

I've been wanting to try the counter in santa monica for awhile now. I'm heading to Father's Office this weekend for the first time and I heard their burgers are the best in the area. Might have to try a bite of a friends.

Also, love grilled portobello mushrooms! Might have to grill up some stuffed ones soon.

Regular burgers, fish burgers, poultry burgers, vegetable burgers - it all depends if it's cooked well and on the surroundings. If the bun is good, then most fillings work well. If the filling's good, then as long as the bun holds up, it's all good. If the bun and filling are both spectacular, the condiments aren't so important. However, great condiments cannot make up for sub-par filling/bun.

That said, I do feel nostalgic for my childhood/adolescent favourite, the Harvey's ultimate burger, back in the day. It came on a cornmeal-dusted kaiser bun and was flame-broiled. I'd get it with all the toppings except mayo. That means diced onion, shredded lettuce, tomato, mustard, relish, hot peppers, pickles and ketchup.

Sadly, they've discontinued that specific burger and replaced it with the Angus burger. Meh.

wowzers! well.. after all is said.. someone is eating a "burger" but the preference varies..

    pfft.. americans and their burgers!

    Sticking out tongue

btw.. my perfect burger would be fresh ground nicely marbled beef cooked medium rare... but add mushrooms too!

now i have an idea.. would mixing turkey or chicken with beef work?

    hmm.. a compromise?

    hahaha

Just a heads-up for all of you who think that turkey burgers are so much better for you than beef, unless you're eating burgers made with ground turkey BREAST, they're about the same as a beef burger. Most ground turkey that I see in the stores is 85/15, which isn't that lean. You can make a healthier burger using ground sirloin (93/7 or so)...it's a little less juicy, but still pretty good.

I actually prefer Boca burgers though...they're really good with onions on them.
