Germs definitely freak me out because I hate getting sick, especially in the Spring and Summer. If you feel the same way, then you may want to disinfect these five things, or avoid touching them altogether:
- Your vacuum. Since you're sucking up germs, dirt, and other nasty things, vacuums aren't exactly clean. Actually, scientists found that 50 percent of vacuum brushes contained fecal bacteria and 13 percent had E. coli. All contained mold. Since the brush is so gross, to avoid contaminating clean surfaces, spray the brush with a disinfectant spray after you're done with it.
- Your weightlifting gloves. Staph infections bind strongly to the polyester, which is often used to make gloves. It's best to ditch the gloves altogether, since not only will you avoid bacteria, but you'll also strengthen your grip.
- Gym Equipment. If you belong to a gym, you might want to know that a 2006 study in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine found rhinoviruses (what cause colds) on 63 percent of the gym equipment at the fitness centers they tested. To avoid the germs, try not to touch your face, nose, or eyes while working out, and as soon as you're finished, wash your hands and face thoroughly to prevent getting sick.
What else contains tons of germs? To find out read more.
- The grocery cart and basket. Think of all the hands that grip those handles. Eww. A 2007 University of Arizona study discovered that two-thirds were contaminated with fecal bacteria. More eww. Definitely pack disinfectant wipes with you and wipe the handles down before touching.
- The restaurant menu, doctor's office magazines, and other public reading material. You think these are ever cleaned? Since cold and flu viruses can survive up to 18 hours on a surface, there's a good chance those germs can get passed on to you. Don't let the menu touch your plate or silverware, and wash your hands thoroughly before your food comes. Remember that the bathroom door handle isn't the cleanest thing in the world, so when leaving the bathroom, open it while holding a clean paper towel.

I have always been afraid of menus and bathroom door handles...Yuck
1These are good tips. I never would have thought about the vacuum cleaner brush. I do always clean off my grocery cart with the wipes that Ralph's leaves out front. Think of all the poopy diapers that may have been sitting in those little seats. Nasty!
2I rarely use the brushs on the vaccuum. But I was thinking about getting some weight lifting gloves because my hands always get ripped up doing pull ups and stuff. it hurts!
3and all this fecal material? Don't people wash their hands when they go to the bathroom? jeez.
Ewwwww!! now i really dont feel bad when my boyfriend calls me a germ freak.it is horrible when i see grown folks walk out of toilets without washing. i can feel the nasty things running all over my hands!!! ugh!
4I want to wipe down my vacuum now. Ha.
5I know some germ exposure is necessary for a healthy immune system, but this is really grossing me out.
6I think I'm going to barf.
7i'm such a germaphobe- but i never thought about the vacuum, thanks for the tip
8Ewwww!!!
9The shopping carriages always freak me out.
i agree wholeheartedly! i remember reading an article from a magazine somewhere that the above mentioned items contain quite possibly more germs than your bathroom toliet! dont forget your purses have germs as well depending on where you place/put them down... ;o(
10I'm such a freak about the bathroom and shopping carts. I never thought about the vacuum or menus though...icky!!!
11Instant hand sanitzer is my best friend at the gym.
12The vaccum is what really grossed me out
13This is why I carry hand sanitizer with me!
14I had a friend in high school who worked at a local mexican restaurant and she cleaned the menu's with windex every shift as im sure every employee did. I thought that was great. Unfortunately, probably not every place does this. Too bad
15Thanks. I'm gonna have the "willies" for a while now and just hope my exposure to all these nasties makes my immune system stronger.
16I love how you addressed this post to "germaphobes" because you know like 1/3 of us are going to be like, "I love dirt! No big deal!! You are a germ freak!" But really, like half the things you named here...definitely even gross me out. I just shut my brain of at the gym, and don't worry about it at all and then like dooouse myself in a long hot shower.

18There are 100+ things I can think of that make me sick, but I CAN'T ovethink them or I would never go anywhere. For instance: library books (lots of people tend to read in the bathroom); soda cans, especially out of vending machines (Most people get it, pop it open & drink. How many hands have touched that can?); buttons on ATM machines, elevators, etc. (personally, I press these buttons with my knuckle); the pens you use at the doctor's office or stores.... I guess I just think, "Well, none of it has killed me yet!" Yet.

20I never thought about the vacuum being so disgusting. Its so obvious when you think about it. I'll never look at it the same way again.
21Okay, I'm definitely a germaphobe, so that tip about the vacuum was great! I think I'll buy disinfectant soon because all I have is Oust for the air.
Oh, and the gym equipment is one reason why I don't go to the gym. It's disgusting! Even though I see their employees sanitizing it every few hours... (And also because of the hour-long lines...My life isn't THAT inhibited by germs)
OKC, I try to avoid touching things that have been touched by millions of people. Like, I'll wash my hands after touching money or using an ATM machine, and I'll use my own pen or buy books I want to read. I'll also buy drinks with caps on it.
22Don't forget public changing tables, bathroom door handles, sink/tub drains (a HUGE breeding ground for Listeria), money, etc....your best defense is to wash your hands a LOT and if you don't have access to soap and water, use hand sanitizer.
23I know of a great site for the shopping cart problem, when you clean with wipes that junk is on your hands. I have been using these handle covers for awhile their great and inexpensive!
