Since many of the exercises require no equipment, Pilates is a great way to work out at home. But it's very important that you do the movements exactly right, so I often worry that beginners may not be getting the instruction they need at home. If you're new to Pilates, but prefer to work out in your living room, then Jennifer Kries' New Body Pilates is a great place to start.
This DVD is a cross between a workout routine and an educational video. Before and during the basic mat workout, Kries — who, poor thing, is much cuter than this unflattering photo! — does a great job explaining both the fundamentals of Pilates and how to do each exercise. For details, read more.
One thing I really liked about New Body Pilates is that Kries explains not only how to do each exercise but also why you need to do them this way. She goes into great detail about how to hold your back, your abs, and your chin and tells you why each move or position is important. As she helps the pupil in the video perfectly position herself, you get what feels like one-on-one instruction from an expert.
Interspersed with the explanations are the actual exercises, which are fairly low impact and probably take up only 60 or 70 percent of the 45-minute DVD. If you're at more of an intermediate level, this mat workout will feel too easy. But if you've never taken a Pilates class and want to try it at home, I highly recommend this primer as your first stop.

thanks for this recommendation. something so important that so many instructional videos miss is the explanation of why.
1I love the educational aspect of "why" moves are done a certain way.
2I love Jennifer Kries! She has a a great soothing, yet motivational tone in her voice. Also she has a great butt, lots of motivation there!
3Yay!!! Jennifer Kries is awesome, her Target Specifics dvd is my favorite, I'm excited about this new one.
4I'm not a pilates girls, but I would like to see more DVD recommendations in the future please!
5That photo IS unflattering. Anyway I would like to try it, sounds helpful.
6Funny, I just did this DVD last week to find a few ideas for my own Pilates classes. I especially liked the bonus magic circle workout at the end--challenging and full of ideas, plus great cues.
7I agree with nextjen. I would love to see more DVD reccommendations as well!
8I just bought Jennifer's new Pilates DVD and I totally disagree that the cover photo is unflattering! She looks strong and sexy and looks like a woman! How come gabiushka and that reviewer doesn't think her pic is fabulous? She looks healthy and vibrant and toned to me.
9Also, to go deeper than what's on the surface here, her DVDs are always so inspiring and uplifting, that I feel empowered and beautiful myself every time I do them!
Have you guys ever tried her Hot Body Cool Mind DVDS?! They are amazing!!!!!!
