Today is the ultimate IndyCar race – the Indianapolis 500 race. Quite the opposite of the completely human powered 26.2 miles of a marathon, this is still an endurance event – the race takes hours to complete.

I am quite excited to say that once again three women have qualified to race!
Fresh off her win at the Indy Japan 300, Danica Patrick will begin the race in the number five position. Sarah Fisher will start in position 22, followed by Milka Duno in position 27. Go girls! You have come a long way baby! Women racing at Indy seem so different from the races I listened to as a girl (the race was always on at Memorial Day BBQs of my youth). I was surprised to learn that Janet Guthrie was the first woman to qualify for the race way back in 1977 and she placed ninth in the race in 1978.
I will admit I tend to follow sports that don't include combustible engines, but these drivers anticipate and respond to stimuli on par with football quarterbacks and hockey goalies. Which is important since their cars are covering the length of a soccer field every second. What about you, will you be watching the race or at least the last 10 laps? Who are you rooting for? Tell me in the comments section below.

i wish she was in nascar & then i'd be watching
1Good luck ladies!!
2i root for danica every year. yay!
that's interesting about janet guthrie. i always thought lyn st. james was the first woman to race in the indy 500.
3I feel the pressure almost like Danica, now the pressure it's tremendous;the first time she was only a contender, now she is a champion, and everybody expects from a champion to keep winning,to show to all that her victory wasn't due to a chance, but to her skills.God,how beautiful would be if she'll win also this race, because she's showing something magnificent to the world, that being woman or man are only a terrestrial concept, available only in our existence on the Earth,we are all human spirits struggling to show to the others our qualities in an endless competition, that is what keeping all of us feeling alive.
4Break a leg Danica and don't let any boy to catch you !
So awesome.
5Wow, Milka Duno is finally joining Danica & Sarah this year! I heard about her a couple of years ago -- apparently she's HUGE in her home country of Venezuela. Best of luck to all of the girl racers!
6Go, Danica!!!
