Diet Tip: Order Half Sizes

I have recently been introduced to a new phenomenon while eating out that can help all of us keep to a healthy diet: half sizes.

I was eating out with my girlfriend and she orders the grilled glazed salmon but then adds, "Oh, and I'd like the half size please." Being that I did not see half sizes on the menu anywhere, I was shocked when the waiter answered, "Sure thing." I asked her about how she knew to order a half size and she told me that she always does — restaurants don't typically print half sizes on the menu, but unlike with kids meals many will serve them to you. Sneaky, eh?

I've been trying the half size theory out on my own and it's been hit or miss. I'd say about half of the restaurants I go to serve half sizes. Some just say they don't do half sizes, so you get the regular size meal and take half home, no big deal. But if they do, you're going to be saving yourself a lot of calories and not to mention cash while eating out. To me, it's worth asking.

Do you already order half sizes? Tell me in the comments section below.

what a great tip! i assume that the article meant half-sizes = lower prices (unless we go the half-portion in a doggy bag).

I've never tried to order a half size unless it was printed on the menu. I'll have to remember this tip!

If it's available I think they should just have it on the menu. It seems silly that someone has to ask if they even do that when they could just put on the menu.

I never thought about asking for a half size before; I'll have to try that next time I go out.

Wow, thank you for this post! Awesome tip. I'm going to ask for half-sizes from now on. I love food, but I can never eat restaurant-size portions and I'm not a fan of icky day-old take-home left-overs. Meh. If I find that my local restaurants do half-size portions, I will eat out a lot more.

...As long as that includes reduced prices, of course. I've seen restaurants that charge you an extra fee if you ask for another plate in order to divide up one meal you buy between two people. I think that's ridiculous, since you're already paying for an extravagantly large portion, it should be yours to do with what you want. So I can just imagine some restaurants gouging you for trying to eat smarter by asking for less.

I didn't know you can order half sizes!! I will definately ask everytime I go out to eat. Most restaurant's portions are way too big anyways. I've been trying to eat less lately too. Thank you for the post fitsugar! =)

My two favorite restaurants offer lunch-size portions of some of the meals I like, so I usually go with those. I never finish a full-sized meal, so this is much better for me.

I've never heard of that, but I wonder if they charge you less for them. Some places offer a "whole" salad for like 9 bucks and the half portion for like, 7.50. Shouldn't it cost 4.50? I prefer to just order a whole entree and box up half and take it home. Then at least I get my money's worth. This is yet another reason why I don't eat at restaurants often.

I do half sizes only because my hubby and I share a plate.

Sometimes the prices are off when I do half size. At Nordstorm's cafe a whole salad is like $8.50 and a half would be $6.50 which doesn't make sense. I normally order the whole and wrap up half for lunch.

I've never thought to ask for a half size - but I'll start asking now. Normally if I'm out with a girlfriend, we'll split a meal - but there's typically a fee for this. I don't get it either... Maybe it's the expense of having to wash one more dish, lol.

I share with my cousin or mom most of the time because portions are so huge. If not I take it home so I can have it for lunch the next day.
