There are so many parties leading up to a wedding, but they all need not be formal, sit-down affairs. I propose (pun intended!) a garden party to celebrate your upcoming marriage. This way you can play games instead of just standing around drinking glass of champagne after glass of champagne trying to make small talk with your future aunt-in-law's third husband.
These simple lawn games are a great way for guests from the different parts of both of your lives to mix and mingle.

- Bocce Ball: Lawn bowling fits in perfectly at a garden party. You can hone your aim and skill as you try to hit the pallina. Here are the rules to bocce ball, so you can be prepared for your next match.
- Badminton: Anyone can play badminton and it is sure to cause a bunch of belly laughs as folks hop around trying to hit the slow floating birdie.
- Croquet: One thing I love about croquet is that you can easily play the game wearing a skirt. Remember Heathers? Here are the rules of croquet if you need a refresher course.
- Volleyball: Kick the action up a notch or two with a volleyball game or tournament. Since volleyball is more athletic than the other games mentioned, you should definitely include information on your invites that the game will be played and the guests interested in playing should bring appropriate attire.

I LOVE Bocci ball! So fun!! My boyfriend and I played croquet the other day, just random and bored. It's not very fun with 2 people though.
1Such a great idea.
I want a beach party for my engagement party!
2Fabulous idea! I love garden games.
aimeeb a beach party is an excellent idea!
3I was very surprised how fun bocce ball was the first time I played it. Plus, it's very accessible; almost anyone can play it.
4We did our at-home-reception at a park and had football and futbol there for kids (but the grown ups got into the action as well). Some folks were on bikes, some brought swimsuits since we were one trail from the marina, and there were pups to play with as well.
5i'm thinking a friendly put put golf, bowling and go cart racing tournament to see who has the better genes! haha. and bringing your A game is required.
6love bocce!
7Cornhole. Does that make me sound like a redneck? I was anti-cornhole for about 2 years, but I have since converted.
8We went to a barbecue last week and someone brought a croquet set. However, none of us knew the rules so we ended up just hitting the balls around the lawn. Plus, one of my friends' 3 year old was running around the lawn pulling the wickets up. I do love a good game of badminton though.
9We play Bocce or horse shoes at family functions.
10I've never played Bocce ball or croquet, although I loved Heathers and whenever I think about croquet I think about Heathers. I think I may get a badminton set for the family this summer. Be fun.
11I love croquet!!
12I was just thinking about that recently .. I'd love to have a 'garden party'!!! So cute and quaint
The people in the picture are actually playing the French game of petanque, which is somewhat similar to bocce - so much fun! We have tournaments at all my fiancé's family parties. I'd love to play the afternoon after our wedding.. I think it would be relaxing and a good way to get both of our families together.
