I know that exercising in the early a.m. before you head to work can be a real challenge. If you aren't a morning person, missing out on sleep can seem very unappealing, but here are some reasons you may want to set your alarm for an early morning workout.
- It's usually a peaceful, quiet time of day, so it can be a great opportunity to think and get some time alone.
- Exercising in the morning can help wake up your brain, clear your mind, and help you organize your thoughts or your mental to-do list for the day.
- If you get it done first thing, then you won't have to worry about trying to squeeze it in to your busy schedule, especially if you have kids. Plus, studies have shown morning exercisers are more consistent.
- Exercising helps get things moving, digestively speaking, so working out early can prevent getting backed up later on in the day.
- Since working out on an empty stomach can cause you to lose muscle, morning workouts will encourage you to eat breakfast, which has been proven to boost your metabolism, which helps to burn calories.
Tell me, how do you feel about exercising in the morning?

No way, I prefer to sleep for a little bit longer. I actually love working out after work to get all of the frustration out.
1I was dying to sleep in this morning, I didn't get much sleep over the weekend. BUT, I'm going out to dinner after work, and I ate a ton of CRAP this weekend, so I knew I HAD to workout in the AM. It's funny, as much as I hate getting up, I've NEVER regret it afterwards! But a lot of the times I slept in, I usually regret it! I'm all about working out in the morning!
2i think exercising in the morning is the best. i don't have to worry about squeezing it in later in the day, plus i have the most energy. whenever i try an afternoon workout, i feel really sluggish.
3I'm a super fan of the early exercise!! I wake up at 6:30 a.m then go to the gym and then I arrive at home at 8:30-9:00 and itìs incredible but I feel full of energy all day long! it's very gratifyng to known that I've already did one hour of excersice and have the rest of the day to study and work! Early in the morning the streets are very quiet, there is not traffic, then when I begin to run i fell how my muscles "wake up"...ok ok, I made my point
4Some mornings it's really difficult to get up but as soon as I'm out there it's so worth it! Definitely a morning exerciser. I also take some satisfaction knowing that I've worked out and done my body some good before a lot of people are even out of bed
5My trainer is always trying to get me to workout early. But I start working at 5:45 and I just can't see getting up at like 4am to work out. I work from home, so maybe if we had an elliptical or something and I could do it in like 15 min incremements I might get it in, but alas, it's teh afternoon for me
6I try to get up and get on my elliptical machine in the morning before I get ready for work...some days it's tough though.
7I'm a PM workout gal. I agree with jexica that it's the perfect way to let the steam off after a long and stressful day. Plus it gives me an hour of "me time" and usually I'm so focused on the workout that it's really hard to dwell on work issues, so when I get home, it's all about me and hubby time.
8I have plenty of time to exercise after work and I like showering at night, so that works out best for me. I do exercise in the morning sometimes on weekends though. I don't mind spending the day all smelly when it's just me and my family
9Right now, I have to get up WAY to early to squeeze working out in before work...maybe once I start my new job I can
10i agree with jexika34. sometimes i try to exercise in the morning, but i inevitably hit the snooze button. i also really enjoy exercising right after work, that way i can shower and have an early dinner and also sleep well.
11I'm up and working out at 5:30am... it gets me going and makes me perky. I do yoga in the evenings.
12I tried this a couple of times but it's really hard for me to wake up before 6am knowing that i can sleep longer! So i force myself to do it after work even though all i want is to go home...
13I wake up every morning at 5:10a.m. to get my workout in. It is so early and never gets easy but afterwards I always feel amazing! If I don't do it then my busy schedule gets in the way. This is my me time and I love it!
14I try so hard to get my workout done in the AM. But I have my bad days like everyone else (like today for example). I feel so accomplished when I get done and it's makes my day that much better. It's done and over with. I don't have to worry about doing it when I get home and I've got a million other things to do. Plus, if I do need to get out some frustration, I just workout again. Lol.
15I just worked out this morning for the first (morning) time in a while! In the summer I tend to do better because I can run outdoors and it's not dark (not a fan of that) before work. Otherwise, I usually go after work =)
16I instantly wake up without an alarm 90% of the day at 5:30 AM and earlier when I have to be at the pool by 6 or spinning at 6. I give a lot of credit to people that work out after work. I just don't have the energy and I enjoy my relaxing time after work. I like to go home, make dinner (usually TWO because my boyfriend doesn't eat all the healthy junk that I eat) and have my decaf and book on hand afterwards. So if I miss a workout morning and HAVE to work out at night, I feel way too rushed.
17I tried it. But in order to have enough time to get ready and get to work after, I had to get up and work out at 5am. I found by the time I was in my truck and on the road to work at 7:30, I was already exhausted and spent. Made for long days. So now I work out directly after work, and that works better for me. The fact that it tires me is actually good because I'll sleep better that evening.
18I compromise. Wed and Friday (sometimes monday too) I get up at 5:15 to work out before work, and tuesday and thursday I tend to work out afterwork. I have to have set morning days though, cause frequently I end up stuck at work till 8 and there is no way i am going to the gym on my way home then.
Sat and Sunday are all about the leisurely mornings and then a fun workout before lunch (long bike ride, hike, extra long gym session)
19i've never tried working out in the mornings, but it's hard for me to even drag myself out of bed in time to work at 9am! if i was to start though, is it better to eat something before you start working out or grab breakfast afterwards?
20Nope, I'm genetically a night owl I think, so I have a hard enough time waking up in the morning to get to work. I've tried to switch up the workouts to morning but the gravitational pull of my bed is too strong and more sleep always wins. I like working out in the evenings anyway, between work and dinner time is ideal for me.
21I like morning workouts if the sun is out (spring/summer)because we can walk outside, in the winter, forget it!
22I prefer morning work outs because the gym or roads are still quite empty. In the evening, forget it. I hate having to wait for a treadmill, and the 30 minute limit sucks.
23i have gotten into the habit of walking to work (about 30 minutes) which helps me get focused for the day. Now i am trying to get back into the habit of working out after work to help get me tired up for bed and help round out my day
24I rather sleep, even its 3 minutes extra. I work out after work and I like just fine.
25I cannot work out in the morning. I can never get a full workout in without running out of time and I hate carrying all my stuff around. I need to shower at home. I like taking classes at the gym and usually there are not that many available in the morning. I also like going to the gym after work and it feels great, since I can get moving after sitting in the office all day. Also although working out in the morning gives me more energy initially, I am ready to nap by 1 pm and I cannot stay awake.
26I tend to actually stick to a workout plan if I plan it for the a.m.
27I am an avid post work workout-er. I love it, after a stressful day, it is a great way to release! Plus it encourages me to miss happy hour every once an a while and save my liver!
28i am trying to make AM working out a priority but it is just not happening. i hate working out after work though. that is a time for errands and dinner plans..AM exercising it is.
29I prefer an evening workout, because I can focus all my attention on it, rather than worrying about having enough time. I also need the energy right after work, rather than just coming home and flopping down on the couch.
Although, if I have to work late, I can adjust my schedule to make a morning work-out work for a few days.
30All reasons are so true!!
31I try to run in the mornings when I get a good night sleep the night before. While I do hate getting up in the morning, I feel great after I run, like I've accomplished something.
32I love my morning workouts. Not only does it leave my day free for whatever I need/want to get done, but it also gives me such great energy for the rest of the day! I enjoy having my afternoons free to grab a drink with coworkers, run to the store, hang out with my bf or just sit on my couch and read, so this allows me to do any of the above and still know that I got something done for the day!
33I wake up at 7am, throw on my clothes, and head to the gym. I do cardio for about 45 minutes and be sure to set my coffee maker before I leave so it's waiting on me when I get back home. It reminds me all day to eat right and gets my metabolism going for sure. I do a short work out with weights at home at night with my yoga ball and mat : )
34
@ Minday I feel the same way... I torment my liver with enough
happy hours... it's nice to give it an after-work break.
35For some reason, if I work out before work, I snack all day... and the closest thing to my desk is the candy for the clients... so I'll stick to my after-work workouts.
I work out every day before work. It wakes me up and I have more energy. I also think twice about food choices I don't want to counteract the hard work I've already put into my health for the day.
36I LOVE working out before work. I get it out of the way, its quiet at the gym, and it gets me going.
37I always work out in the morning. It gives me a ton of energy and it definitely "gets things moving" so I just feel better all day long.
38I never tried working out in them morning but I have read reasons why but it's so hard to wake-up even extra early for me.Maybe I have to go to bed early. So that way I won't be as sleepy and I had my full 8 hours of sleep.I may try to work-out in the morning when school is out but for now I work-out after school
39Like simbaspaws, I can never get a full workout in without running out of time - I don't like feeling rushed - and I like to shower at home. Furthermore, I also know a lot of people who work out at my gym and like the social time I get during my evening workouts. I don't mean being distracted from my workout, but saying hi to people I recognize, catching up. This is good for mental health!
My current "after work" is 2pm because I work at 6:30am so morning workouts are out anyway. I still often wait until around 5 so that the familiar faces are there, even though I do like how empty the gym is in the mid afternoon and getting my workout done by the time most people are finishing work makes me feel productive.
40I've hit a rough patch in my life and having an extremely difficult time finding the motivation to work out anymore. But when I do work out, I prefer working out in the morning.
I'm an early riser anyway and it really gives you so much energy.
I didn't know that working out on an empty stomach causes you to lose muscle! I'll have to make more of an effort to eat breakfast from now on then.
