Diet Tip: Don't Underestimate Your Calories

If you spend a lot of time eating out, then be realistic about how many calories you think you're consuming. MSNBC reported on a recent study that found we all tend to underestimate how many calories we're eating when eating out — by 93 percent!

If you're eating something that seems like it is healthy, like a whole grain bagel with a thin layer of veggie cream cheese, then it probably is. If the bagel is loaded with veggie cream cheese, then probably not so healthy. But do be realistic and pay attention to what you put in your body. Just because it says whole grain and veggies does not always mean it's healthy or low in calories.

With all this in mind, tell me how many nights a week you cook at home.

This is why I rather eat mostly at home, especially with the ridiculous amount of calories some things have.

I usually estimate around $1000 calories when I eat out for dinner. Usually I look online after and it's more like 600-800, so I do pretty well

My guy and I will usually order one entree for the both of us because you can get a lot of calories on one plate.

I cook at home 7 nights a week...I only eat out rarely because of the crazy calorie counts out there. My aunt eats out about 5 nights a week and she has a weight problem despite not really overeating. She WAY underestimates how many calories she eats because there are just SO many calories in most restaurant entrees.

I always guess a ridiculously high number of calories when I eat out just because it's always cooked in the most unhealthy way.
