Flaxseeds are not taking any flack. Even though the omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseeds might not be as easy for your body to utilize as the omega-3s from fish and fish oil, there are still plenty of reasons to eat flaxseeds.

There are a couple of reasons that this little seed can help with weight loss and one big reason is fiber. Flaxseeds are a good mix of insoluble and soluble fiber, which combined help to aid digestion and contribute to a sensation of fullness post meal. If you prefer flaxseed oil, it ranks highest on the satiety scale as well and it promotes fat burning not fat storage.

The health reasons to add flax to your diet are quite convincing as well. Flaxseeds contain lingans, a phytoestrogen (hormone-like chemicals found in plants) that have been shown to lower the risk of developing hormone-related cancers like breast and prostate cancer. Flaxseeds also help lower the dangerous LDL cholesterol and may help lower blood pressure, two risk factors for heart disease. Not to mention that 50 grams of flaxseed have been shown to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics by 30 percent.
My suggestions for adding flax to your diet are simple. Add ground flaxseeds (I use an extra coffee grinder) to oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit, or smoothie. I like to use flax oil in salad dressing or instead of butter on whole grain toast. How do you work flaxseeds into your diet? Share with us in the comment section below.

I just started eating these in Trader Joe's Uncle Sam Flakes with Flaxseed! I really like them!
1i started taking a flax seed pill from Whole foods.
2I have flax seed pills and actual flax seeds but I don't know where or with what I can grind the seeds. If it promotes fat burning, then I really need to make an effort to figure out where I can grind them. I've read multiple times that it's really better to have them ground up.
3better to be ground up rather than taking a pill?
4my trainer always says that you get more out of them if you eat them ground up, over taking a pill. I put it in my oatmeal everyday. I actually got my dad to do it too now. I buy a big ol bag in bulk at a health store (for like a $1) then store it and grind it a little at a time. I use a coffee grinder. I like this stuff
5I use a coffee grinder to grind mine too. But sometimes I use flax oil... put it in smoothies and oatmeal (like the ground seeds).
6Fit - is there any benefit to eating the seeds as-is? It seems to me that they, uh, go right through you unless ground up. I have been taking the pills, but add flax seed to granola when I make it.
7Hmm maybe I'll try these...
8Silly3- I'm pretty sure they have to be ground, the shell they have is quite tough, and all the good stuff is on the inside. Fit, you always seem to know what I'm doing, just eating my cereal with flaxseeds when I came across this!
9I take a supplement that has Flaxseed in it and my bread from Whole Foods also contains them.
I'll have to buy some and grind them up...I think I'd mix them in my salads!
10I love flaxseed oil in fruit/water/protein smoothies.
11i sprinkle flax seeds over my salads. You don't even notice they're there.
12Breakfast smoothie! I use one tablespoon of High Lignan Flaxseed Oil, one tablespoon of ground milled flaxseeds, milk, a banana and some frozen fruit. It's sooo delicious and it guarantees I get my daily serving of fruits.
13Yeah, you have to grind them up to get the nutritional benefit from them. Otherwise, they kind of just go through your system unharmed.
14yeah i heard that milled flaxseeds are better than whole ones. i recently bought some and now add a tablespoon or two to my breakfast protein shake and it helps me stay fuller!
15I take it in the capsule form (oil) with my multivitamin as some vitamins are water soluble and others are fat soluble. This way I get maximum absorption.
