I love, need, am addicted to my cup of morning coffee. I follow it with a slow and steady stream of green tea through the rest of my day. Recently I became curious about this substance, stimulant, and drug and here are a few things I learned.

- It is believed that caffeine blocks the brains uptake of the chemical adenosine that causes drowsiness by slowing down nerve cell activity. That is how it gives you so much pep.
- Dark chocolate has about 3 times as much caffeine as milk chocolate.
- The body absorbs caffeine through the stomach and intestine, and peak blood levels occur about 45 - 60 minutes after ingestion.
- Only 50 percent of regular caffeine users experience withdrawal symptoms like headache or drowsiness. No one knows why.
- Caffeine can enhance performance in endurance sports, especially for activities lasting longer than an hour.

Interesting...I wonder why I get headaches during the weekend...it's cause I needed my coffee
1I stopped drinking soda for my New Years resolution. However I did it a little at a time through December and then on New Years day I wasn't so crazy. I had a HUGE withdrawl when I switched from Pepsi to Root Beer and I didn't know why, come to find out most Root Beers don't have caffine. No wonder.
2It's weird now though because I don't really drink coffee ever but if I get up really early I will stop by the gas station for some and the whole day (from 7am to 7pm) I will be WIRED! I will be shaking sometime around noon. My body just doesn't like it anymore... Atleast I hope that's it. :/
Wow, #1 is very interesting. I didn't know the details about why caffeine stops you from being sleepy, but that makes sense.
3I drink soda(pepsi, mainly) on a regular basis. If I don't have any for a day or two, my withdrawl symptoms are horrible. I get very edgy and throbbing headaches. I'm sure it's gotta be unhealthy to have symptoms even at all, right? It really is an addiction.
I used to get terrible headaches when I didn't have caffeine, but since I've stopped consuming so much of it and upped my water and green tea intake, I seem to have balanced out and no longer have the crack-head shakes or headaches. Though I do admit to popping open a can of Diet Coke when I'm in need of a quick boost. Everything in moderation; it sounds like such a cliche, but it's the truth.
4I started drinking coffee daily about two months ago and then started breaking out badly. I gave up coffee last week (so painful!) and my skin is now clear. Anyone else have this problem?? So sad!!
5I used to hate coffee but when my job got really hectic and I was traveling a lot and was exhausted I started to really load up on caffeine to stay awake luckily I've been able to cut down without withdrawal symptoms. Maybe its because it wasn't years and years of use?
6GreenSkittlesGal - my guy had a huge problem with that. he used to drink mountain dew religiously and once he stopped drinking it (he now has a pepsi every now and then) his skin cleared up. with the mountain dew, we thought it was all the sugar doing that to his skin but it really is something regarding the caffeine for some people
7i shake too when i drink coffee, but any sort of stimulant does that to me -- asthma inhalers, nondrowsy cold medicine, etc.... unfortunately though i got addicted to cafe con leche in spain and so i just suck it up, type instead of write things, and let myself shake it out!
