So you grew up drinking cow's milk. Why would you even think of switching? Well, for starters, soymilk is a healthy option because it's cholesterol free, plus it's low in saturated fat and high in protein. It also comes in different flavors, like carob or chocolate, and you can bake and cook with the unsweetened or vanilla flavors.
Due to soymilk's current popularity many companies make it, and the the brands all taste different: some soymilk is thicker like Edensoy, all vanilla flavors are sweeter, and some taste more like real milk such as Silk brand. My advice is to taste more than one brand and flavor. Why not buy a few at a time and have a soymilk taste test. Don't drink them directly from the grocery-store sheIf; stick the container in the fridge for at least an hour or two because soymilk tastes much better cold.
Aside from texture and taste, the soymilk brands differ nutritionally as well. To see how they compare, just read more.

Mmm... love soymilk! I love Silk Light Chocolate and the regular sugar-free Silk soymilk. soooo delicious... not as good in coffee, so I still drink organic skim milk too.
1Silk Light (plain) is the best I've found so far! And Trader Joe's makes great mini-boxes of chocolate soy milk -- great for a snack and relatively inexpensive
2Chocolate soy milk is AMAZING. I'll buy that every once in a while as a treat to myself, otherwise I just buy fat free Horizon organic milk.
3I'll think I'll stick with my regular milk. I like Soy well enough, but it leaves a weird aftertaste.
4I do Almond Milk
Less controversy.
5I actually stopped having dairy milk because I started to notice how much buildup of phlegm I ended up with, which is gross. Very Vanilla is one of my favorites.
6Isn't regular milk one of the main sources of calcium for most people? Specially for women, how do you compensate if you're drinking soy (or almond or whatever) milk instead? Or do you guys still eat other dairy products (cheese, yogurt...) instead of soy subtitutes like yogurt?
7I've thought of switching to almond milk but the women in my family have a history of osteoporosis and I've been told by doctors that drinking cow's milk is very important for my calcium intake.
Anyone else has problems with this? How do you substitute?
ntshlv, you can still get calcium from other sources other than milk. Try low-fat yogurt, 1 cup of 1% cottage cheese, or even calcium fortified orange juice.
also, another thought, you don't have to necessarily switch completely to almond/soy milk. You should mix it up a bit. And maybe you could look into taking calcium supplements if your family has a history of osteoporosis.
8I may have to try the unsweetened Silk. For the most part, I don't mind regular vanilla Silk but when it gets heated up, it tastes VERY soy-like.
ntshlv, I would second the recommendation for calcium supplements; it might not be a bad idea anyway if you have osteoporosis in your family.
9Rice Dream is my favorite, with vanilla Silk with fiber not too far behind. I can't really drink regular milk anymore because it bothers my stomach too much, but sometimes I splurge and have a glass of fat free Oberweis.
10Nt- Lots of vegetables have calcium, and plenty of products are fortified with calcium, like orange juice. Studies suggest that cow's milk actually contributes to osteoporosis, so it may not be a bad idea to branch out to additional calcium sources besides dairy.
11Soy milk tastes like tree bark. Unless you're lactose intolerant, I don't see the benefit in drinking it. And doesn't too much soy cause breast cancer? Maybe I'm making that up, but I thought I heard that somewhere.
12Calcium comes from different foods, and some people can't actually have dairy any due to intolerance and allergies which people who promote dairy have the tendency to ignore. And the only way soy is going to be bad for someone is if they depend on lots of fake meat products and lots of processed soy in general. Even food that is known as good food is bad in excess. People can't drive themselves nuts over every study that claims one thing or another. I don't care to have dairy milk when I think vanilla soy milk tastes fine and unlike cow's milk, it doesn't make my throat fill up with mucus and phlegm.
13to the people who claim to soy causes cancer, EVERYTHING causes cancer. are you going to stop using your cellphones because they emit radiation that can potentially cause brain tumors, or stop eating fish because mercury may impact fertility in men and women ?? people consume much worse things than soymilk, like fatty burgers and bacon. shouldn't we be more concerned about that ?? soy products are HEALTH foods. ever since i stopped drinking cow's milk and began drinking soymilk and eating soy products on a regular basis, my skin has never looked better. as a matter of fact, i'm actually thankful that i'm lactose intolerant.
14i forgot to mention that i like light silk chocolate and light vanilla the best.
15every time i go to starbucks i realize that more and more people are switching to soy milk - and it's really interesting to see that people are being more open to it. when you're not raised on something, it's common to be a bit apprehensive about the taste and texture but there are definitely benefits to it. thank you for sharing some of this information so that more people can see that it's something to consider.
16I wish coffee shops wouldn't charge extra when you ask for your latte to be made with soy milk. My favorite coffee place charges $3.75 for a regular latte, but if you want it made with soy milk, the price jumps up to $4.25! That's too much money! I shouldn't have to pay extra just because I am allergic to cow's milk. Too bad they make such great coffee...
17I like soymilk. I've tasted Silk plain, vanilla, and chocolate. It's good.
18i love silk unsweetened. i don't usually drink regular milk unless i'm eating oreos
19I like the flavor of vanilla Silk, but I don't usually buy it because it costs more and I have no problems with cow's milk.
208th continent is a great brand of soymilk, very tasty. Also, soymilk is actually very comparable to cow's milk when it comes to calcium. Check your labels
21Thanks Jasmint, I didn't know trader joe's had the mini cartons of chocolate soy. I would love to be able to bring them to work with me.
22I use Silk Light Vanilla in my cereal every morning, or my shakes - I love the taste and it negates having to use any extra sweetener in the shake!
