The economy and the possibility of a recession is making the headlines daily. This means many of us are tightening our belts for various reason. Spending habits certainly change when the economy falters and things like private Pilates sessions, gym memberships and traveling across the country to run in prestigious marathons become luxury items rather than the staples of a fitness life.
So I am wondering . . .

Uh, shouldn't no be an option? I work out at home so I don't spend any money. It would be nice to buy a new workout outfit I guess, but it's certainly not necessary.
1I workout with dvd's at home and got a treadmill for Christmas and bike/walk with the dogs.
2my gym membership is really cheap and i've learned to skimp on other things (not so many treats at the grocery store, less shopping for cute new outfits) in order to maintain the membership.
3I had to give up my really, really nice gym because the ones in the area where I moved were just too expensive to join, but my school does offer a small (and I mean teeny tiny) one that has a few treadmills that do the trick. They work, right? The problem is managing to go when they're not all in use, but other than that, I try to run outside too. I do miss the gym I used to go to and all the classes and equipment that came with my membership, though.
4it hasn't affected me at all... i still go to the gym everyday. i'll never cancel my membership- i'd rather give up other things
5I moved to one of the world's most expensive cities and took a bit of a pay cut, so yeah...defo had to give up my gym membership! Oh yeah, I tried running but managed to f*ck up my ankles. Go me!
6I agree with others who say "NO! It hasn't affected me" should be an option
I just don't feel the pinch yet from this "recession" and even if I did, my gym is also VERY cheap like Kren and all the classes are included in the membership fee.
7I work out at home too. Elliptical, weights and running outside.
8I'm the budget queen so I haven't been "pinching" that much. The only thing I have been doing is restricting my amazon.com purchases.
9I work two jobs, but recently I've had to up my hours at both jobs and work overtime. Before I could easily find time to go to the gym and get my workout in, now if I don't go in the morning(after getting home from my restaurant at 1am), I find there's no other time to do it.
10No, it hasn't affected my fitness schedule at all. I haven't belonged to a gym in a couple of years. I have my own gym at home-tons of DVDs, steps, free weights(a good range from 16lbs to 60lbs), medicine and stability balls, jump rope, racquets/balls, bike. Plus my apartment complex has new equipment in the fitness room-elliptical, treadmills and machines.
11I've been broke for a while so it's nothing new haha. But I do have a trainer, that I scrimp other places to be able to see. I might have to cut back my time seeing him, which bums me out. We'll see though
12I dropped my gym membership to free up money after buying my 1st home...So it had nothing to do with a recession. I enjoy running outside and have a lot less excuses these days.
13if anything recession has caused me to focus spending on health rather than vain indulgences (handbags, shoes and clothing)... meaning organic foods and working out more (though i use workout dvds and merely pay for one studio yoga class a week) but definetely do not even consider joining a gym due to the cost...what really affects me is the rise of the euro as a foreigner living here and earning dollars it makes it increasingly difficult to travel..so i dont know if it has particularly affected my fitness routine but it definetely impacts my life.
14I changed gyms to save some money, and I look for specials at yoga studios. I was taking pilates reformer classes but at $30 a class, I don't go as often anymore.
15I has not affected me, I go to the city's park workout room, and it is free.
16Well, it definitely hasn't affected my workout regime. My elliptical at home and I are best friends
But the recession and cost of groceries have sky-rocketed, so it's harder to pick and choose some of my healthier, organic foods. I just bought a gallon of Horizon skim
organic milk, and it cost over $6!!
So... I've been affected by that a bit, but my
working out has not.
17I can't give up my yoga studio membership, but at $125 a month, I really need to cut back on everything else. I have alot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner these days:(
18Sorry about forgetting to add a "No – the economy is not affecting my fitness life!" I must have been feeling very pessimistic when I wrote up this poll. I was prompted to write the poll after talking to a Pilates Studio owner who said she is feeling the recession.
So good to know so many of you workout on your own and at home!
19It's actually been good for my fitness--I'm so angry at rising gas prices (nearly $4/gallon for regular where I live) that I walk a lot more places.
20We haven't felt a difference from the "recession".
21No it hasn't affected my fitness habits. My gym membership is subsidized by my health insurance and has all the classes I could ever want, plus a sauna, steam room and pool. I haven't sprung for cable or a fancy tv yet, and my gym has personal flat-screens so I can watch tv while I do cardio, which saves time and money!
The only thing I will change is not driving to they gym on weekends, it's 15 miles away, and I usually go on my way home from work.
Maybe we should switch to "yes" or "no" polls for yes or no questions (this being the fifth time I've suggested this).
22Uhhh... I've been spending more! People aren't signing up for yoga studios and spending money on workout gear like they used to, which means more perks and sales! Even with inflation, merchandise has gotta move
23Sadly this has greatly affected me. I cannot afford the gym at all now as my job was cut due to the recession.
You guys who want "no" as an answer are lucky!
24I prepaid my gym membership for 3 years a few months ago, so not at all. I won't be signing up for anything new anytime soon though.
25I have a wish list a mile long and I can't buy any of it because funds are tight. My gym clothes are losing their color!
26It hasn't affected me much at all, since I don't have a gym membership and most of my workouts are at home.
27well.... the apparel co i worked for slid down hill because of the economy and laid-off a few of us... so i've never had so much work out time! It's wonderful. yay unemployment!
28Well, I don't go to yoga class as often as I used, but I still go fairly often.
I also just bought a small elliptical machine for my home yesterday, so I definitely will be using that often. And I love to go for walks in the summer with my husband...and those are free!
29Not so much...
30I thankfully have not been affected by the economic slowdown (except my 401k is taking a beating), but it has affected my fitness life. I'm trying to be more conscience of my spending and shopping for clothes less, so with my extra time I have been walking around the city and exercising more in the park.
31Well I am about to quit my daytime steady job with 401k and other benefits for starting a company with some other people and it is risky but potentially big pay off. So.... I have been going to the beach and running a 4 or so miles a day and running whenever I can to relieve some stress.
32It hasn't affected me at all.
33it's affected my fitness life in a positive way, actually. i was laid off a couple of months ago, so now i work out twice as much as i did when i was employed. at least there's a bright side, right?
34It hasn't affected me at all. I work out at home with videos and although I run, I'm not good enough yet to run races, so no money's being spent there.
