My husband is in love with Google Maps. I don't think he'd drive anywhere without checking the traffic and comparing routes. Me? I am more of a walker and like my own two feet to power me whenever I can. I just stumbled across a more fitness-minded use to Google Map — Gmaps Pedometer.

You can now track the mileage of your daily trek. All you have to do is drag your mouse around and map out your walk to and from work, to and from lunch, to and from the post office, etc. The Gmap Pedometer will keep track of the distance of each leg of your daily journey. Enter your weight and it estimates how many calories you burned while walking.
So go to it! Get walking! Then track it!

I love this, I am always keeping count of the blocks I walk.
1I prefer mapmyrun.com -- you can save the routes and add to you calendar. It'll keep track of how far you went that week or that month (not just for running/walking, but also for your gym exercise, bike rides, etc). If you keep track of the time it took you to complete that, it automatically calculates your pace and calories burned.
I always use the hybrid view since it's great to figure out the trails in DC.
2I always use gmaps pedometer over mapmyrun, runninglog, and all 3289238932892389 others of those same things. why?
gmaps pedometer is simple. i don't need an account. and i can just bookmark my route! Also, the interface is a lot simpler and easier to use than, in particular, mapmyrun's (waaay too many features to be usable).
I've been using this for my runs for a long time!
3Yeah, this isn't really a novel idea.. I've been using mapmyrun.com forever and it's awesome.
4This was actually much easier for me to use because I couldn't get mapmyrun to track the distance around a park that I walk at (it's not your typical .25 miles around like a track), so this was key. Thanks, Fit!
5i like www.favoriterun.com it uses google maps and you can share your routes with other runners
6This is great!
7this is great! my route to and from work is 200ish calories--just around what i estimated. i'm glad i could look and actually find out for sure, though!
8So Cool. I'll definitely use this
9awesome!!!!
10I use Gmaps pedometer all the time to create new running routes and new dog-walking routes. It's a really cool program and it's pretty easy to use.
11Google Earth has had a similar tracking tool for a while now...
12I love this site & use it frequently. But I could swear I first read about it here.
13cool!
14i like mapmyrun.com, it's great. I haven't heard of this one though!
15I LOVE this mapping program! I used it during my trip to London to log all my walking miles. It was great to keep track of all my hard work. Now I use it all the time at home.
16Neat.
17I use this all the time. It really motivates me to go further and further without taking the subway.
18Very cool. I walk every day on my lunch break and now I know what the distance is that I have been walking and how many calories I am potentially burning. Thanks for the web tip!
19Am I the only dummy who's having trouble with this thing? How do you start marking your points? I've got it on my home address and when I try to click and drag, I'm dragging the whole map. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
20Forget it - I've got it now! DUH! Haha - Happy Monday to everyone
21joanna33t: click "start recording", then double click at your first point on the map. then double click your second. and so on. until you're done and click "end recording".
