A lot of women can't do many (or any) push-ups, often resulting in failing initial fitness tests. Is this a result of simply just being a woman, or of not strength training enough? I think the latter and a recent SF Gate article details how commonplace it is for women to often shy away from push-ups while sticking to the more feminine cardio machines, leaving the push ups to the men.
I have to say I am guilty of this. Yes, I will do the occasional push up, but I know I need to do more if I am looking to improve my overall strength. My husband on the other hand, will do push-ups until the cows come home, but try and get that man on a treadmill and you've got another thing coming for ya.
So of course I'm curious — what about you guys, do you do push-ups?

I used to not be able to do any and now I can do 5! ... on a good day.
1When I started strength training I couldn't even do one pushup. Now I can do ten easily. That article has been showing up in a lot of places lately and I think its completely right!
2when i was a competitive athlete and had really good upper-body strength, i could do 20-30 pushups in a row...unfortunately, now that i've stopped strength training, i can do 3 (max!). i think the fact that most women can't do pushups is definitely due to the fact that most women don't do upper body weights particularly often, and don't practice doing pushups. certainly, if you keep yourself strong and practice pushups you can get really good
now if only i could get back into my previous shape!!
3I have been them alot lately. For a few years, I wouldn't do them at all. Now, because I have really improved my upper body strength, I can do about 8-10.
4I do push ups 4 or 5 days a week - three sets of six. I was up to 3 sets of 10 before Christmas, but then I took a few weeks off...
5I do push ups...
6girlie push ups...
and exercise ball assisted
I think about doing them all the time, but I am usually at work and by the time I get home, the thought never crosses my mind!
7I can do five normal push ups in a row, but I'm more comfortable with the girly ones. Though, the girl in the picture above has certainly discovered the best way to do push ups! LOL!
8I hate push ups!
9I really like doing pushups...I can do about 20-25 in a row but I usually do 3 sets of 15
10of real pushups..not girl pushups because those actually just feel harder
11Of course I do push ups! They're one of my favorite upper body exercises because they work so many muscles and you don't need any equipment. It does take practice to become good at them though. (The real push ups)
12We do them in my Pilates mat class. We usually do two sets of ten (which equals 20, duh) and I can do them all even after doing one minute front plank, side plank and reverse plank!
13grrr, doing push ups has been my goal & i still can't do them (regular at least). i don't like to bother with the "girly" push ups, as i feel defeated doing those......
what are the best exercises to build up to doing push ups? help me, FIT!
i have a small petite frame, about 115 lbs, and i'm doing weight training, but maybe not enough or not the right exercises?
14I try...
15Usually if I don't go to the gym that day I will do some
Usually 2 sets of 15 or 3 sets of 10 --- they are the best way to work your entire upper body!
16I never used to be able to, but now I want to be strong, so I've been doing strength training 2x a week and I can do a few. I love feeling stronger though, I'll keep it up
17i do normal pushups every night before i go to bed. i try to beat to improve in getting the best possible time. i find that the body really knows how to continually improve itself and be more efficient if u keep doing something. i strength train ALOT and barely do cardio except for walking.. I can't stand cardio.. I do however do circuit training when i strength train.
18I do P90X and there's a lot of variety in the pushups in that program. I always make sure to work the opposing muscle groups and add pull ups as well.
19In addition to my regular workout routine, I do a session pushups in the morning right after I wake up and another session at night, just before I go to bed. I started with 1 set of 10 per session and have increased it every week (i.e. 1 set of 12, 2 sets of 8, 2 sets of 10, etc.). It's a great way to start my morning since I'm an afternoon exerciser -- and, as for the night session, I think I've tricked myself into believing it gives my metabolism a quick rev right before I go to sleep (wishful thinking?!)
20I was doing them daily. I graduated from modified pushups to full pushups, but then I hurt my wrist and could not do any, so I am starting over at modified.
21I do them....but I hate them. same goes for lunges. Andi if I didn't go to classes - push ups and lunges would never happen
22I can do pushups on my knees only
My goal this year has been to say YES! to everything when it
comes to working out. So in Body Pump, when it comes to the pushup part, I used to modify or do an alternate move when it came to that. I'm trying, so hopefully I can get to "real" pushups
soon!!
23Chatnoir- How is P90X? I see their commercials all the time. I do Push TV which also makes you do pushups but right after all these bridges so my wrists are just KILLING ME!
24I was told in school that pushups damage the tissue around the breasts.
25I do 20 on my knees, though.
I try doing some sometimes.
26If my trainer makes me...
27When I had my trainer I used to do them all the time...and now...forget it. Ahahaha.
28I love pushups and can do more than m hubbie! I did 2 set of 20 last night with a BOSU! They make me feel tough.
29Did them all the time when I was in the army. Not so much anymore, but I could still knock out 20 real pushups before switching to on my knees and working to failure.
30I am in the final stages of re-habing some nasty elbow/triceps tendinitis. I did my first pushup in six months a week ago. Very psyched. I am doing them on my knees. When I was a kid, in gym class, we called those "girl pushups". So I guess I am doing girl pushups
31I try to do 20 everyday. That may sound like a small amount for a 6'1 male, but I also do yoga sun salutation twice between each yoga pose. I also do the bench press and other chest exercises, so I think it balances out.
32I do 5 daily a few times a week, and I used to think I was so weak. But after reading posts here, I don't feel too bad haha
33I use to have no definition in my arms but over the last year I've been doing what a fitness instrutor at my gym calls pyramid pushups and I can definately see and feel a difference. You can start with smaller sets and work your way up. I highly recommend these! All you need is a set of dumbbells (start w/ 3 or 5 lbs and use heavier weights as you get stronger). Do one pushup (c'mon, you CAN do at least one off the knees), then sit up on your knees and do one overhead pressup with a dumbell in each hand. Then do two pushups followed by two overhead pressups and continue up to eight of each(or four if you're just starting out). Once you've completed eight (or four), continue doing the sets but work down (so, from eight to seven to six, etc. until you've made it down to the bottom of the pyramid....one of each. You will be worked after this exercise and will feel the difference in your biceps and triceps (not to mention it helps with strengthening your core).
34Best of luck to all.....great exercise for tank top season!!

Oooops! Didn't mean hit the post button 3 times! Is it Friday yet??
37I try to include them in my workout. And I usually do them 3 times a week but I'm lucky if I get 5 done each time!
38I'm definitely inspired by everyone's push-ups. I'm starting my fitness routine after having a baby and push-ups are definitely part of it. I think they help with the abs, too.
39I do the girl ones
40Only when I'm taking a class and the instructor makes me!
41About a year ago, I could crank out 25 no problem, but now 10 is a struggle. At the moment, I'm trying to get my fitness routine back into the swing of things, so I'm just focusing on cardio, but I definitely plan to integrate pushups back into my workout.
42i like push ups a lot but i have the problem that my wrist hurts sometimes. maybe those little stabilizing muscles are still underdeveloped?
43I saw an interview with Lindsay Lohan about a year ago and she said that her latest obsession (I guess besides drinking, drugs and partying..hehehe) was doing push-ups. She said if she was waiting around she would drop and do a set of push-ups at random. I thought, "Brilliant!" So I do at least 3 sets of 10-12 throughout the day. Sometimes I do them at the office when I'm making copies, or faxing a long document, or after I use the restroom (I'm the only woman in the office so I have my own private bathroom). Sounds silly but it works for me.
44I'm proud to say that i do three sets of 15 with every workout. i love working my upper body. i did a lot of different martial arts growing up and push ups were used as warm up and punishment! i got used to them quickly.
45i typically do modified push ups, but every couple workouts i break out the ball and do 3 sets of 15 with my feet on the ball.
Nobody mentioned this but it got me back into pushups. I found a pair of "ultimate push up" ($10, Big Lots) aka push up pro, and other names and thought I'd try them since my wrists kill me when bending. I don't have the expensive type and they have rubber grips and make push ups so much more comfortable. They also double for yoga and pilates props and help stablilize with poses. I bought my mom some (in her 70s) so she can use against a wall to get started. Also nice if the cleanliness of the floor you're on is questionable!
462 sets of 10 "real" pushups - woohoo. Not bad for a thirty-something old lady.
47i do 2 sets of 22 of 'real' push-ups pretty much every day (at least 6 days a week), but they are basically my only consistent upper body exercise, aside from yoga.
48I wish I could.
49I do 20-30 a day, every day. I've found that they help give me a really nice upper body without a lot of hassle or special equipment.
