In a recent Glamour interview, Fergie Ferg revealed that one of her diet tricks is shots of organic apple cider, unfiltered. She said:
"Two tablespoons. For some reason I've noticed a difference on my stomach. I just trusted [my trainer] on this one. I'm sharing. I'm all about sharing secrets."
Does anyone else smell a magic bullet? Now, I have read that drinking apple cider vinegar (ACV) can help with many ailments, but never weight loss, so I decided to do a little investigation. To see what I found out just read more.
Basically what I found out is that there is very little evidence in the ACV for weight loss category, with little scientific backing whatsoever. WebMD does speculate that white vinegar (and perhaps other types) might help people feel full, but this was the results of a test on only 12 people. Remembering a quote I love from Dr. Andrew Weil about ACV, I decided to see what his expert opinion is on the whole matter. He said:
"There is absolutely no scientific evidence showing that apple cider vinegar can aid in weight loss or that it contains any magic ingredients that help you to shed pounds. Back in the 1970s when this diet took its place among the many weight loss fads and scams, proponents claimed that somehow a combination of apple cider, kelp, vitamin B-6, and lecithin fooled the body's metabolism into burning fat faster than it would normally.
These days the claims are far less elaborate — supposedly, all you need to do to lose weight is to take one, two, or three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar before every meal, starting with one teaspoon and then working up to two or three. I understand that taking more than three teaspoons isn't supposed to lead to better results. The only dieting advice you get with this 'diet' is to eat moderate portions at meals, avoid snacking, and wait for the apple cider vinegar to reduce your hunger and food cravings."
So there you have it. If you're looking to lose weight, I know it seems easy to say, "Fergie looks great and all she does is take two tablespoons of ACV," but I'm willing to bet my left arm that she works out and eats right and did not get that body from ACV. The formula for weight loss, once again, is healthy eating and daily exercise.

That's disgusting. Celebs fall for anything.
1The other problem with ACV is that it will DESTROY the enamel on your teeth if you drink it straight. I meet too many people who don't know that and do it! If you have to do the apple cider vinegar thing, at least water it down or drink it through a straw!
2Researchers of the Glycemic Index have found that adding vinegar to any meal decreases the glycemic impact that food has on your insulin. That could be one reason it has been recommended for years. But instead of having a shot of vinegar why not have a mixed green salad with a homemade vinaigrette.
3Just the thought of drinking vinegar of any kind makes me want to hurl.
4I have used this before, I do notice a difference in my stomach ailments. I have a sensitive stomach and have a hard time digesting things, this stuff works. Some people can't seem to drink it but you just take it like a "shot" and it's not so bad.
A friend of mine marketed a better tasting version for women a few years ago, with herbs added for woman common ailments.
It's not regular vinegar it's apple cider vinegar, it's not that bad. I think most alcohol tastes worse! Like scotch.
5EWWWW...Couldnt do it...
6Do the ACV supplements have the same effect??? I often see those at my health food store.
ACV doesn't help lose weight but it does reduce acidity and helps balance the gut. Also, it gives me energy!
7I could think of worse things someone could take for weight loss. I'm more likely to use apple cider vinegar mixed with water to use as a toner.
8i used to drink shots of apple cider vinegar at night as a way to purify my system. my boyfriend swears by it but i don't think i did it regularly enough to notice any difference.
9My chiropractor says that if you have low stomach acid, this will help digestion because it's an acid.
10Id be willing to try it.
11To me, it reads like she was drinking unfiltered organic apple cider (like juice), not apple cider vinegar. There is no mention in her quote of vinegar.
12actually this has been one of the things I've used for years...not only for managing weight but overall well being. It fights off illness--when I feel a sore throat coming a shot a vinegar does kills the bacteria.
Kombucha is a better tasting alternative and has a similar effect. But like anything you can't just take two shots of vinegar and expect to loose weight--what people fail realize is you need to change your ENTIRE diet to really see an improvement!
13I take it back - I read the Glamour article and she says vinegar there...
14I used to do this - and it does help you lose weight... you feel so sick afterwards that you don't want to eat anything.
15My family has been in the business of racing horses for years, and everynight they mix ACV in their feed. Why? Because it tightens their stomachs and does help stabalize fat...but that is in horses! I think it can do the same in humans, but make sure it is Apple Cider Vinegar and not white, that stuff will really harm you if it drank straight! Also, make sure you don't go drink a bunch of this stuff...moderation! A lot of websites talk about the benefits of ACV, check them out...google it!!
16I have herad of this time and time again but never tried it!
17kjwest, I'm sure that's it! Ha.
18Please go to any health food store and read the bottle of Braggs Organic apple cider vinager you can even go to there web site the people who looked into the ACV missed very valuable info and it will not ruin your teeth any worse than a can of diet coke can for crying out load . dont knock it till you try it . Remember Braggs is the brand .
19I GUESS THE 250 DOLLAR A DAY METH HABIT SHE HAD DIDN'T WORK AS WELL AS ACV
20Acidity of a food or meal tends to lower the GI factor of a meal. Adding as little as 20 milliliters of vinegar to a meal is shown to drop the GI factor of a meal tremendously. Lemon juice also appears just as powerful. Sourdough breads, in which lactic acid and propionic acid are produced by natural fermentation, also appear to have a GI lowering effect on a mixed meal.
21Interestingly enough, I just met a woman last month who told me about how she used to weigh 350lbs. She's down to a size 12 now and has maintained her current weight for about 3 years now, even after having a baby. She was the first person I heard about the vinegar thing from. I guess everyone's different but she told me she pretty much ate anything she wanted and had taken 2 tablespoons of it before every meal for the first 2 months. She dropped a lot of weight during that time and continued to work out and started eating better in general. She eventually weaned herself off of it but it seemed to work for her.
22ACV is also used to rid the body of toxins. In some stores (healthfood and some regular supermarkets) in the suplements asile you can find a tablet that is ACV. I have some and take it occassionally, probably should be more often. A hole lot better than drinking the stuff (yuk). But it will make you visit the bathroom a little more often so don't over do it.
23The primary reason that Vinegar affects weightloss or weight gain is that it affects the body's PH. Studies have shown that if you maintain a balanced PH to the body leaning toward the Alkaline that your body will utilize sugar and burn fat stores more effectively. You can get the same results by eating a diet that is primarliy Alkaline such as fresh fruits and veggies. The american diet is composed mostly of Acid based foods and that affects the entire body's ability to function properly. You can purchase PH strips at any healthfood store to see where you are functioning currently and then change the ratio of your food types accordingly or drink nasty vinegar in your bottled water lol. The PH of the body directly affects the presence of disease in the body as well (that is why a Respiratory Therapist takes Blood Gases which is a measure of the PH in the blood to determine exactly which organs of the body are malfunctioning) therefore maintaining proper PH can help in the prevention of illness and disease. They ancient Egyptians used Vinegar as a health promoting substance thousands of years ago.
24I was with a "medical" weight loss program in the 80's and they told me to drink 3 tablespoons of ACV every day. I would guess their claim to aiding weight loss is the fact that it acts as a diuretic. I was literally in the bathroom every 10 minutes when I was doing this! So the weight loss is all water, not fat.
25It's actually an old, old, old Romanian secret. And sure the science community will say there is NO proof, but who cares what they think.
First off to all the dumb comments, vinegar at a tsp size will not hurt your teeth.
Fergie may be taking more than she needs, the Romanian's no, if you want to lose weight, to take a tsp a day or add to a salad.
My favorite, I've been eating a salad a day for 43 years. Yup, since I was 5. I am the only 48 year old with no body fat or see me is to believe. No one can believe I am less than two years from 50. Most say 34 years old.
So, start everything young, so that when you do get older, you don't look it or feel it. Everything in moderation. Way to go Fergie!!!
26Cheers with Vinegar!!!!!!! 1 tsp a day
Vinegar can also be used as an antacid for the same reason..PH
27When I first came to the US I experienced a lot of problems with my stomach, bloating, gas, water retention (to name a few) etc. I was shocked because I had never had any of these problems before at all. After 5 years I started feeling better but yet I would feel bloated and I would suffer from water retention, PMS etc. I read online about ACV. I started taking it. I would not experience again PMS. I would feel not full after having a meal. Yes, there is no scientific evidence but it did help me a lot with different issues. I just take it before going to bed, once a day. When diluted in water is much easier to take. I actually like vinegar. Give it a try and see for yourself!
28ACV can be added to the old adage that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" it has some medicinal value.ACV also acts as a diuretic eliminating water weight.
29Celebs should just fess up to what they actually do so normal people can learn from them and see that they work their asses off to be so thin. Maybe then we wouldn't all strive to be a size 2.
30I just finished eating a salad and I had ACV on it as a dressing. It gives a nice flavor w/ not a lot of calories and no fat!
31After hearing about the supposed health benefits, I started trying this. I sometimes take 1-2 tsp in a 1/2 cup of cranberry juice. It doesn't taste as bad that way.
32Vinegar, i didnt know that vinegar helps you to loose weight, ive been trying these new polyteanx capsules and i am losing weight already. I wonder how they compare.
33You need to be very careful when taking ACV. I drink it almost everyday and it helps with so many things but you HAVE to water it down. It has been known to burn holes in your throat and can ruin the enamel on your teeth. Be careful it doesn't taste that bad. You can warm it up and mix it with honey and cinnamon and it doesn't taste bad at all.
34i don't know about losing weight with apple cider vinegar, but it is suppose to clean out your artries - the plaque that sticks to them.
I've used it, and it bought my Cholesterol down below 200 !
35My dad did the apple cider vinegar and honey thing and the only thing he got was an ucler!!!
36Yes, I have to say that AVC does work. It is an old remedy which has been used for many years. I have been drinking the AVC cocktail (avc, honey, water) since 2004. I lost a total of 40 pounds within 6 months that year. Of course along with diet, exercise and drinking water. I have a book which lists it's many pluses and use it every day as part of my daily regimen. I agree with one of the members here in that you should sip it through a straw because over time the acid with eat away the enamel on your teeth.
37hey all, new to this site, i am just wondering if there would be any side effects taking the ACV for a prolonged time, i recently started eating a lemon in the afternoon after my meal, skin and all, well except the seeds, i used to drink lemon juice deluted in water for some time but i stopped cause i thought it would do some damage to my insides, any comment would be greatly appreciated, have a great day to all
38Wow Fergie is an idiot. Nothing but eating healthy and working out is going to help you lose weight AND be HEALTHY. See that word in caps HEALTHY? yeah that should be the most important thing, not how skeleton looking you can get. Plus vinegar all by its self? thats absolutely disgusting. People who fall for that have absolutely no common sense. Of course if you only take shots of vinegar your gonna loose weight. What else are you eating? NOTHING. I don't see where being completely miserable by taking shots of nasty stuff is a great way to loose weight. It should be fun and a chance to try different foods you have never tired before. It's about setting fitness goals and motivating yourself, not starving. If you can't have fun while changing your life style. MAKE IT FUN!
39GC...LOL, I totally agree.
My sister and I used to do this when we were young and a little chubby. My mom made us do it. I'm shocked my sister and I don't have enormously out of control eating disorders (although, I was anorexic for a time) because my mom is ALWAYS talking about her own weight and my sister's and my weight. She's always like "if you both were thin, if would be so much better off" things like of that nature. It sounds obsurd that she would say something like that, but it's there and we've lived with it. My sister and I are no means FAT, but we have nice built bodies. When I lost 70lbs, she was so in awe of me. It's weird.
40I was a flight attendant back in the 90's when there was a weight restriction and I can tell you from personal experience that apple cider vinegar does work for a short term weight loss, only because it seems to be a natural diuretic, meaning it makes you sweat. In fact it begins to work almost immediately, once you drink it you should feel little beads of sweat forming on your lip and brow within a few minutes. Also, because of the acid, it helps to trap fats and pass them through your system faster.
Try a sliced cucumer with a tablespoon of vinegar as a healthy snack, I love it, and it does help.
41First off, it doesn't stabilize fat....or help you lose fat.....ACV is a natural diuretic - meaning it helps the body shed excess water weight. It is not recommended on a daily basis, it is very acidic and can not only ruin the enamel on your teeth as a previous post suggested, but it can also aggravate acid reflux disease. I would most definitely NOT just "trust someone" when they tell me to do something. Hello?!!!!!! What did your mom always say "if your friends jumped off a bridge....would you?"
42I ALSO HAVE TRIED ACV IN THE PAST AND FOUND THAT IT'S WORKS GREAT.ALSO LIKE THE FAMILY THAT HAD THE RACE HORSE BUSINESS,I ONCE TRAINED AND RACED GREYHOUNDS AND WHEN THE MEAT WE WOULD FEED THEM MADE THEM GET TOO MUCH FAT ON THEM WE WOULD ADD ACV TO THEIR FEED AND IT WOULD CUT THE FAT FROM THE MEAT.BUT YOU HAVE TO WATCH HOW MUCH YOU TAKE BECAUSE IT CAN DO HARM TO YOU WHEN YOU ACTUALLY THINK IT'S DOING SOME GOOD.BEST OF LUCK TO ALL THAT TRY THIS.
43I dont know about this one, i mean i agree that it probably makes you feel full but im not running to my vinegar to take two shots of it. Personally the two things that have worked for me with weight loss are weight watchers, but who likes to count and carry that book, and wu-long tea and their PolyTeaNx pills...oh and cant forget the most important thing in trying to lose weight, NO JUNK FOOD!!! or ONLY ONE cheat day a week!
44About ACV: one info source, probably out of print, but possibly available through Amazon.com or Abebooks.com, is "Folk Medicine," by D.C. Jarvis, M.D. Dr. Jarvis may wax over-enthusiastic at times, but his book rightly explains how ACV helps the body maintain an acid balance. He claims in one chapter that it can help one lose weight, but I would take that with a grain of salt. As a prostate cancer survivor, I began to take ACV to see if it would keep my waterworks healthy, since bacteria do not grow well in an acid medium. Result? It does. Also, my family has somewhat of a problem with foot odor. ACV has made that practically non-existent. I take ACV just as Dr. Jarvis prescribes, by mixing two teaspoons of ACV to one teaspoon(or a bit more) raw honey, stirring them into a ordinary glass of warm water. I do this two to three times a day. Honey, by the way, has really anti-bacterial properties. It can be used to cover wounds or burns. Its enzymes prevent it from spoiling. I once helped a friend with a 60 lb. lug of honey that had sat in her hallway for almost ten years. After we cut the top off of it, we found the honey perfectly usable. We immersed several jars in hot water to liquify it. Worked great and tasted the same!
45Ok, first off, ACV works perfectly fine as a weight control program. I lost 40 pounds in two months, and I'm just fine. Not only that, but you can help keep the enamel on your teeth when you drink it by doing this.
Mix:
2tbls ACV
2tsp Baking Soda
8oz of water
Not only that, but during that two month period I ate what I normally did, about three times more carbs than anything else. That's right, I ate CARBS! -Gasps- Those evil things that are supposed to be so horrible? Yes, I ate them. I still lost weight. Not only that, but those of you that eat protein in large amounts? Yes, that'll work, to a point. After you eat so much protein it starts to get stored in your body as sugars. You can only use so much protein.
Anothing that works, if you can handle it, is to drink 4 cups of ice cold water about 30 minutes before a meal. The reason this helps is your body has just taken in a shocking amount of near-freezing water, and so what is it going to do? Burn stored calories to raise its temperature. It was decent, you just have to make sure that you don't eat more than normal. Also, if, when you eat, you use a large plate and cover it in food, your body learns that a full plate=full stomach, so you should use a smaller plate. You know that old adage, "A moment on the lips, a lifetime on your hips"? It means that you should savor your food and eat slowly because it takes 20 minutes after you're done eating for your brain to realize it's full. -I learned this in science class and confirmed it with myself as a test subject during lunches-
46My grandma lived to be 97 years old. Part of her diet was using vinegar with her meals. She dips her meat(specially), fish, vegetable portions with a vinegar every meal. She has always told me that it kills or burns the fat off. She died of old age but not of high blood, sugar, heart, or any kind of bad disease. She has also lived on her own without any aid but rather happy and active. Maybe the vinegar has something to do with it too.
47Just check out Dr Jarvis online. He was a legit doctor that did studies first w/ animals then groups of farming people in VT in early 1900's. Apple Cider Vinegar & honey diluted w/water to taste three times a day. Can't say enough about what it helps AND I lost 2" off waist in 5 months! U can pick up his book online @ Amazon cheap, I'm telling you, I've got 5 others converted so far! Worth every effort!
48acv actually is thought to help you loose weight because of the enzyme that is found in it and acv does not destroy enamel because it is not acidic like many think(it makes your body more alkaline which everyone usually needs). acv cures a lot of ailments and if some of you ignorant people would do some research you would see that.
49I dont know about this one, i mean i agree that it probably makes you feel full but im not running to my vinegar to take two shots of it.
