Sometimes I get a question that I know you guys will be able to answer better than if I were to attempt it myself. So help fellow user mandy2lin out by giving her your expert advice.
"Being a college student, I practically live on frozen meals. I was just wondering which healthy entrées are the most delicious. I just recently discovered South Beach Living Pizzas. What other frozen meals should I try?"
I've found that I enjoy frozen meals from Amy's Kitchen and Kashi, especially the Lemongrass Coconut Chicken. You may also want to check out my advice on how to pick a healthy frozen meal. I know you guys have your own go-to tasty and healthy frozen foods so share them in the comments section below. You may even find a few items to add to your grocery list this week.

I just polished off a Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers Chicken Margherita - it's wonderful. At 340 calories, it's a bit on the high side. I like many of the Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice and Weight Watchers meals that are pasta or rice based. The potatoes tend to have an odd texture. I mostly use the trial and error method for finding my favorite ones, then buy a bunch of whichever group is on sale for the best per-meal price.
One trick to realizing it is actually more food than you think is to put the meal on a plate instead of eating it out of the plastic tray. It looks tiny in the tray but fills the plate.
1This is tricky. Obviously a college student eats frozen meals because they are cheap. So recommending a healthy frozen meal is going to be more expensive. And by that point it seems silly to be eating a frozen meal that costs the same as one you can cook fresh.
2I'm a college student and also live off frozen meals. I love the lean cuisine pizza, especially the bbq chicken one and the one that's like alfredo chicken thin crust (forgot the actual name of it). I also like the LC pasta bowls.
I also eat a lot of lean pockets, and pair them with a small salad or some fresh fruit. I find that the Amy meals have too many calories.
3i love love love the amy's frozen meals. they're usually good sources of complex carbs and vegetables that'll fill you up for not a lot - and plus, they're great for vegetarians and vegans on the go. i might usually have one of their burritos for breakfast if i'm running late to class or something, they're a college-aged vegan's lifesaver!
4I really like the kashi southwest style chicken, chicken pasta pomodoro, and the chicken florentine. I could pass on the other flavors. I usually sprinkle a little salt free tony's ontop, but they are good plain.
5Trader Joe's Spinach Lasagna
6I think most frozen meals are gross, but I LOVE the ones by Kashi, especially the coconut chicken one that you mentioned, Fit. Amy's is also a great brand.
7I also like Lean Cuisine pizzas in the square white box...and the Healthy Choice turkey/stuffing combo is good, too. I eat these all the time - lots of sodium but I don't watch that too much. Sometimes I'll throw in a handful of frozen veggies to beef everything up, nutritionally.
8I like the paninis by Lean Cuisine, and their flatbread melts/wraps.
9I had the chicken pasta pomodoro from Kashi yesterday and I thought it was gross. The sauce had a weird taste and it had some nasty chicken pieces in it. I have some other flavors at home to try but was not impressed.
10I'm not one for frozen meals.
11No matter what you decide on, get some frozen (or even better: fresh) veggies to add to it. That will make even mac & cheese and pizza healthier. Add to dinners that come with veggies because they don't give you much. The biggest problem with frozen foods is the sodium content, so just don't add salt or eat salty foods the rest of the time, and it might balance it out. My favorites are Amy's & South Beach Diet (by Kraft) because they use whole grains or wheat instead of white flours.
12I'm a grad student and when I get busy I live off of frozen gardenburgers, frozen turkey burgers (Jenny-O makes a lean one), and the Green Giant single serving veggies (broccoli and cheese and broccoli/carrots in italian seasoning are great).
13i was a college student once and never lived off frozen meals, so i dont really get this. if i have to recommend something frozen i'd say baggies of veggies and gardenburgers.
14I was a college student once as well and never ate a frozen meal...do you live in a dorm and only have access to a microfridge type thing? Because if you have your own kitchen, its much healthier and cheaper to prepare your own meals. If that is too time consuming, make a couple of meals during the weekend that you can then freeze and defrost during the week.
If you live in a dorm, then I highly recommend going to your school's cafeteria and hitting up the salad bar and the meat station for some protein.
Frozen meals have too much sodium in them and I find that they don't have enough protein or veggies in them.
15i'm a big fan of both weight watcher's and lean cuisine's italian frozen meals (lean cuisine canneloni, ww calzones ad ravioli, and both of their mac and cheese's.) i second the idea of putting it on a plate though and not eating it out of the tray, it really does make a difference. if you're trying to watch your sodium intake though, i'd def. stay away from them. i'm doing weight watchers so they're convenient for me.
also, i learned from my college years that chicken breasts and frozen veggies can be just as easy to make as frozen entrees. you can cook both in the microwave, or if you have a free hour or so, cook the chicken in your oven then freeze them again, saves time when you're ready to eat it!
16I think the reason the girl eats mainly frozen foods is not necessarily price, but time. When you're in college, sometimes you barely even have enough time to eat a frozen dinner. When you're crunched for time, or studying for a test, you don't have the time to cook chicken or pasta, you need your food ASAP. You shouldn't criticize someone for what they eat just because you don't like it.
17I am a Kashi frozen food fan!
18amy's is also my favorite as well. =)
19i love frozen meals cuz they're portion controlled and great for when i feel like a hot lunch but am not willing to eat 500+ calories of mac and cheese etc. I don't know if you guys have President's Choice in the States, but their blue menu roasted veggie lasagne is killer-and only 240 calories. Their chicken caccitore (210cals) is dece. Lean Cuisine Basil salmon with orzo is good too but no frozen meal is complete without tabasco!
20i like some of amy's and i also like kashi chicken florentine. i occasionally will indulge in the lean cuisine and smart ones although my nutritionist wants me to withdraw them from my diet.
21I agree with some others that said the Lean Cuisine pizza's. They are cooked on top of the box which somehow makes them crispy. They are so good I could eat them every day (I don't though lol)
22Trader Joe's anything frozen or not is delish.
23Frozen meals can be a great cheap alternative in college. However, I made the mistake of not checking the calorie/fat content for my first few years of college. Make sure you get a meal that is low in fat as well as calories. I also check the weight watchers points on Lean Cuisines & Smart Ones and try and stay 5pts or below per meal & add fresh veggies like carrots to make sure your getting enough vitamins. My favorites: LC broccoli, potatoes & cheddar (just 4pts!) & broccoli/chicken alfredo past (just 5pts) & I recenly discovered Kashi's sweet&sour chicken (it's 6pts, but only 3.5 grams of fat & has 6 huge grams of fiber! it really filled me up!)
24i am usually pressed for time so i rely on amy's. the pizza pockets are great.
25teh kashi pizzas are good as well - forgot about those
26Amy's and lean pockets with whole grain crust!
27I like the lean cuisine paninis and pizzas but they're pretty high in sodium and end up sitting in my freezer for a long time until I'm desperate.
28kashi mediterranean pizza is my pick, but i slice some fresh red bell peppers and add them on top before putting it in the oven. throw a little bag salad on the side, and it's a lovely little meal.
