I'm always telling you to get a workout partner so you have another reason to be motivated to stick to your goals. One way to take it the next step further is by becoming a running buddy with Girls on the Run — a program for girls age eight to thirteen years old that combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts.
The goal of Girls on the Run is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. As a running buddy you are paired with a girl to run by her side, encouraging her to do her best during a one-mile or 5K run/power walk. Not only will you be helping a girl achieve her own goal, but you'll be helping yourself to get moving. What's more motivating than that? I'm doing it here in the Bay Area and I can't wait. Find a Girls on the Run branch near you to inquire about becoming a running buddy today.

I can't tell you how much I love this idea. Thanks!
1none in my state, but what a lovely idea.
2I remember running in the 5 mile "Walk-a-Jog" through my neighborhood when I was in 3rd grade. At every mile they had little dixie cups of water, and of course I didn't know any better than to just drink as many as I could...... I sloshed over the finish line!!
My older brother had come in 2nd place overall the year before, and I just really wanted to be like him. Anyone in the neighborhood could participate, so he was racing against adults and he was only in middle school!
3I think this program is awesome. I just looked it up and they have it in my area. Thanks for the great idea!
4I recently ran the crescent city classic 10k in new orleans, and the overall top female finisher from Louisiana was a 15 year old girl! I was shocked that a 15 year old would win!! (well she didn't beat the kenyans, but still!). It's cool that programs like this are teaching young girls that they don't just have to play softball or soccer, that there are tons of active things that are available to them that they could possibly be really good at.
5I did the Girls on the Run 5K in Chicago last year. I love the idea. I should get more involved.
6I would've liked someone to teach me how to run/encourage me to run when I was a kid. It was always so awkward in gym class since I only had male gym instructors. I'm glad this program exists.
7Great idea...
8I love this idea! Absolutely fantastic. Unfortunatley they only have branches in Ontario (for Canada). Go figure.
9This is the sort of program we need for girls, I'm glad it's out there. I didn't see anything for MA in the link! I wish there was.
10I am so inspired by this program! I'd love to volunteer ASAP! Thank you Fit, for the awesome link.
